Hey guys!!! I'm PREOP gastric sleeve patient and have done all the pre reqs so far. My last and final step before submitting to insurance is the psychological evaluation. I have an appt this Thursday! So my question is.... What will it consist of? Is there any way to "fail" an assessment? That'd be the worst! What questions will they ask? Am I overreacting? Lol any insight will help me!!! Thanks so much!!!

mine just asked me generalized questions, I was nervous too! he asked me about my goals and if I had support, asked me to explain the procedure to him and then some random family questions.

I think its just to make sure you know this isn't easy!

I had to do the same thing! My psychologist ended up being a patient of Dr. Clark's as well, and had had her sleeve in September. Really put me at ease. She only asked generalized questions, and asked to what extent I've researched the sleeve. She was feeling me out to be sure I understood the impact this surgery has on your life, and make sure your expectations are not unrealistic. I don't think there is any way to fail, to be honest. I was so nervous too, you're overreacting like I did, I felt so many butterflies in my stomach before the appointment, scared I'd say something wrong. Really just be honest and let them know this lifestyle change is a second chance for you.

You'll be fine! :)

I had a meeting and a computer test. The computer consisted of 304 true or false questions. I laughed the whole time!! The computer questions are absolutely ridiculous!! The psychologist was really nice and asked just general questions about my mood, family and support. I think they just want to make sure you are not depressed and are doing this for the right reasons. I was extremely nervous. If you have a computer test don't sit and think, just answer :)

My appointment consisted of questions about depression, suicide, etc. I was honest and said I had struggled with depression off and on, but not suicide. The doc wanted to make sure I didn't think this was a "magic pill" that would solve all of life's problems. She also asked about support at home, and how I envisioned my life before and after surgery.

When we were done, she asked if I had any questions about pre-op that should be addressed by the nutritionist or surgeon. She said her job was to make sure that patients are realistic about the surgery and what it means in terms of recovery too.

In other words- you'll be fine! :)

Don't stress yourself over the psyc evaluation. They just want to make sure that you know what you are getting into and that its not an impulsive move on your behalf. My Psychologist ask me do I know who the president is,or who the vice president is. He then told me three words= apple table and New York then he asked me to repeat them five minutes later....I dont know why he did that I think it was to test weather I can remember instructions. Dont worry you will be ok.

We'll put it this way. I'm severely bipolar (to the point that's why I'm on disability) and diagnosed Aspergers. I've been psych hospitalized 14 times. And I passed. Be honest, have realistic expectations, and you'll be fine.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
