Random Post-Op Questions

My surgery was on Monday, so I'm about 3 days post op. I had the gastric sleeve & a hiatal hernia repair. This was also my 1st surgery ever... So a lot to take in...

1. Water, I'm drinking it, but it hurts. Especially anything cold.

2. Protein, I can't drink the entire 8 ounces at once. Is it OK, to sip on the same glass throughout the day?

3. Gas pain, I'm still having gas pain, and it's really painful to burp.

4. Bowel movement, my NP said if no BM by post-op day 3 (today), to start miralax. So I've started that today...has anyone else had to take miralax? Any issues?

Thank you in advance for your time & answers. Feeling very overwhelmed!

-JM

I had surgery April 27th. First surgery also. Water was very hard to get down. My second and third day were the worst. I woke up 5 days post op and felt so much better. The gass pains were also better. Now, I did not have a BM until 1 week post op. I then went another week and no BM. I took a full dose mirlax and had horrible loose stools. I definitely wouldn't take a full dose to start. It will get easier! Now I don't even feel like I had surgery.

I had my surgery on the 27th as well. The second and third day was the absolute worst. There is no way your going to get 8oz down at a time. They say to try and drink every 15 minutes. I used gas x strips for the first 2 weeks for the gas and didn't have a bm for about 5 days. I still don't have one everyday and constipation is a constant issue. Good luck to you.

Have you lost any weight since the surgery....I have stayed the same and it's starting to irritate me

Thank you so much for your replies. For some reason today, being day 3, has been a rough one. I wasn't sure why, but it's a relief to know its not just me. I'm going to go ahead and cut the miralax dose in half too. Thank you again. It's nice to know the light at the end of the tunnel isn't a train. Lol

Lol....It definitely gets easier. I was back in my bed sleeping on my side and belly about a week out. Today I have absolutely no pain. I can drink large amounts with no pain and I can eat about 4oz with no issue. I'm on my puree week and I live off of my protein shakes, grits, sf pudding, and the individual tuna packs. The tuna is a little heavier than the grits so I can only eat a 2 oz pack. I had a half of biscuit with gravy yesterdAy and I thought I was gonna die lol....didn't agree with the choice I made but damn it tasted good lol....

I actually was up 2 lbs for about 5 days posted op. Then I dropped it after a week plus a few pounds. I am 3 weeks post op Monday and I have not lost anything all week. It's frustrating but my doctor warned me this might happen then it will start coming off.

Pureed until Memorial day. Greek yogurt, Eas carb control protein drinks, cottage cheese sometimes. Eggs were gross to me...still have a popcicle a day. Averaging around 500 calories a day. How about you? Oh and I started with a string cheese yesterday I just chew it down to nothing lol.

I do a protein shake in the morning....then for meals I do grits and tuna mainly. I don't mind eggs but they hurt a little. I cooked pinto beans and froze several 4oz containers. Beans were yummy lol. Sugar free pudding. That's about it

Regarding the weight gain while in the hospital, I'm sure it has a lot to do with being dehydrated pre-op, and then getting round the clock fluids while being admitted in the hospital. Plus tack on swelling from the surgery itself. It all kind of evens itself out, so by the time you're DC'd it's perfectly OK, to have not lost & maybe even gained. I hope that helps a little...?

@jm726 Try varying the temperature of your Water. Cold water can cause spasms in some people at first. Room temp is what most people prefer. I had the hardest time with plain water after my surgery, but the minute I added lemon, lime, crystal light or infused water, boom the pain was gone! I read somewhere that water has a high surface tension and swallowing it post surgery makes it feel heavy like rocks, but by adding something to it like a squeeze of lemon the surface tension is decreased. I haven't actully looked into this theory, but I can say it does work for me!

Keep in mind, you were just pumped full of fluids for your surgery, once you are up and moving around more and your Protein and liquid consumption starts increasing you will start dropping quiker.

I'm 6 weeks out and it still takes me more than an hour to drink an 11 oz premier Protein shake. It just feels heavy and fills me quick.

You are doing great...as long as you do your part your surgery will do its part!
