Severe Constipation: Advice Please

I am one year post op and have battled constipation since month three. I went on Thursday to see my surgeon regarding this issue. He has me drinking Miralax everyday now and has ordered a stool analysis to check fat content. He was very shocked when I told him about the constipation. I have also had a significant weight loss stall for the past 5 months. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Stop counting calories! You malabsorb fat so when you don't get enough, you get constipated. You need to lube the machine.

I can't agree more! Counting calories for a DSer is useless. You lose weight because that's how the tool works.

Absorbing no more than 20% of Fats

About 40% of Protein and the same for complex carbs.

The fat that you don't absorb keeps the intestines lubricated. You may have loose stool a few times till you get the quantity right for your body but constipation can be severe if you don't eat enough fat.

My nut said add flax seeds or chia seeds to your shakes...

Does this go for the mini gastric bypass as well?

Adding fiber does really work well for the DS. Fat is more effective.

No. These guidelines are for Duodenal Switch only.

Two tablespoons of mineral oil every night before bed has been a life-saver for me! My sister recommended me trying it after hearing me complain. Mineral oil is prescribed for her 9 year old grandson who has severe constipation issues and it has been working for him. It works great and is very cheap.

Best of luck,

Carol

Agreed. The DS is a different animal.

twice I had a near impaction, at the risk of TMI here I had to use KY Jelly and was sore for 2 wks after, this was on liquids too which surprised me, I now drink miralax once a week and my Dr. told me to increase my Water, have you thought about Fiber gummies?

Laxatives are not a long-term solution for a DS patient. Increased fat consumption is the only answer.

I know y'all are just trying to be helpful but the DS is different than all other WLS and you're non DS advice can be harmful. The though is nice but dangerou .

I am sorry I was on the lapband forum and clicked her topic I didn't read her surgery type I assumed I was talking to a bander.

I increased my fat intake above 100 grams. Hopefully this will get things moving.

Can't wait to hear that you got some movement.

I took everyone's advice and checked out the facebook groups and re-evaluated my diet plans based on veterans of the surgery. Yesterday I finished with 148 grams of fat, 110 grams of protein, and 21 carbs. I have not been to the bathroom yet, but I can say there is a lot of activity in there this morning! Thanks again for all the advice

I understand that you are trying to be helpful but Water intake will not help someone that has the DS and is constipated. And raisin bran isn't advised because of the carb content. The only cure is increasing fat intake.

Use caution when giving out advice. The Duodenal Switch is totally different than all other weightloss surgeries. And bad advice can be lethal.
