Post op help needed - hunger

I was sleeved on Dec. 18th. The process went perfectly, except like many, I had a very large hernia that I didn't know I had (about the size of an orange) and that had to be repaired at the same time. I can honestly say that my tonsillectomy surgery a few years ago was far worse than my VSG, so I'm happy about that.

What I'm not happy about is that for the last week (I'm on soft foods) I have been feeling what feels like major hunger just a short time after I eat. I have never had reflux except for when I was pregnant long, long ago, but I don't really feel like that's what I'm feeling. This is a gurgling, hunger sensation. It's certainly happening sooner after I eat something like soup, and takes longer when I eat more solid food. BUT, a major reason I had this surgery was to (albeit temporarily) shut up the hunger for a while.

I called my Dr. and they didn't seem to think it's reflux because it's not a burning or feeling in my chest or throat. The nurse asked my eating routine and I told her that I have breakfast every morning (about a 1/2 a scrambled egg), and a protein hot tea on the way to work around 730 am. By 1030 I am feeling this famished feeling. She asked me if I am hungry in the morning and I said no way. I have never been the type to be really hungry first thing in the morning even pre-op. So, her suggestion was not to eat breakfast and wait until I feel hunger a little later and start eating then. But, isn't this a contradiction in terms? Aren't we supposed to eat breakfast for a healthier metabolism?

Sorry for the long rant, but I was wondering if anyone else is feeling a lot of hunger so early post op? Any suggestion are much appreciated! Love you all!

It is acid in the stomach. Doc told me to take Prilosec 14 day dose and a tablespoon of Maalox at bedtime. It will pass, trust me, been there!

  • So when you are hungry at 10:30, why not eat a little Protein? I remember those first couple months I was eating like 5 or 6 times a day. Here's what my routine looked like: 7 or 8:00am: Breakfast

  • The 3 meals doesn't work for everyone. Early on I had to do 3 meals/2 snacks. Now I'm mostly 3 meals but I always allow for an afternoon snack if I'm hungry. It really depends on how active I've been

My surgery was Dec 17th, and I'm very hungry, especially in the evening. I've been only on protien shakes and liquids up until now and I'm hoping that the next stage - soft diet will help me stave off the hunger.

I haven't felt the hunger, but if am certainly more in tune with my eating habits. I feel my food travel and gear the groanings as my food is digesting- I can't say I have felt hunger, but I know when I need to eat. Be sure to keep up with plenty of water that will also help fill you up in between meals

@@BLERDgirl - thank u so much. I will follow u on myfitnesspal. I have not yet started tracking carbs abd calories as i am on pureed foods, Next tue onwards i start soft foods and i will start tracking from then....

Being able to put something more substantial in my tummy made all the difference in the world. That first soft egg took forever to eat, but it was soo good!

I was sleeved on Dec 9 and i had the same issues. I was HUNGRY a lot of the time. Everyone suggested that it was stomach acid, which may have been correct but part of what my dr's instructions was 20 mg of omeprazole (sp) which is the active ingredient in Prilosec, Nexium etc.

Once i started eating more foods than the soups/shakes i found that started to go away little by little. Today i was not hungry really at all except for now as I'm writing this. I find that it comes back mostly later at night now when i do have it. i try not to eat late but maybe i need a snack or even a Protein shake later after dinner.

I asked my doctor about this a week ago. Said I will never "feel hungry" again if I make sure I keep to the high protein diet and get my water intake at 64 oz a day which the water intake is extremely hard for me still... Said that the noises will most likely always be there but those are not hunger noises, so not to think that I need to go and eat something. Hope that helps. I also try to time my three meals 4 hours apart and then a protein shake/bar in between meals. Oh and for the soft foods, I was told to start each meal by eating the protein, like chicken (which I always added veggie broth to to moisten it, not a lot of broth, but to make it "soft") and it helped with the belly noises if I started with a harder "soft food" like chicken or slow cooked beef versus cooked carrots... It's still soft but it still heavier

I had my first soft meal last night, it was AMAZING!!!!! As simple as it was (egg beaters with a little cottage cheese), I ate a little too much too fast, and paid the uncomfortable price of doing that. But I got over it and later on I had the best nights sleep in quite a while. Never woke up hungry once.

Try making the egg over medium, so the white is cooked but the yellow part is still runny, it makes it easier to eat - I think - and I add a little black Beans to mines (not canned but cooked the dried beans in veggie broth)... Also try adding the over medium egg in a 1/4 c of oatmeal (make it with soy milk for the added protein)... I had this for the first week of soft foods.
