Hi! I'm getting bypass on Friday and my nerves are taking over me as I get closer. I'm sure this is all normal! But I'm just all over the place with emotions.

But I should let you know progress in weight loss is so varied from individual to individual that there is no average to depend upon. You're on a good site to read everything you can on dealing with weight loss surgery. Best of luck in your research.

Thank you all! Just got home from the hospital and everything is going well so far! Can't wait to see progress!

My most difficult moments are actually around dinner time. That is when I miss real food the most. I have lost 14 pounds so far so I am trying to keep focused on what is healthy. The change is so much bigger than what I ever could have imagined.

I am in my 12th week post op and I feel like I have a whole new life. I am off every single medication now. No more diabetes, no more high cholesterol, no more high blood pressure. I CAN and do exercise regularly because my joints do not hurt as bad as they once did. I no longer have cravings for sweets at all, thank goodness! I currently do not suffer from dumping either so I have tasted sweets, they simply taste horrible to me.

This is so inspiring and what I am hoping for. I have done a TON of emotional work with a therapist over the last 2 yrs for emotional eating, but the sweets still taste so darn good I'm still drawn to them even if I no longer binge like I used to. If surgery can help me lose my taste for sugar it will be a miracle. I have my first meeting with surgeon Jan 19.

Not everyone loses a taste for sweets. I didn't. I just don't overindulge because I know I have only so much space and that's taken up with getting my Protein and Water in. I can have one bite of a sweet and be satisfied. What I don't have is a craving for them. Yet I've heard of others still having cravings. My advice would be to start doing the work now. Figure out if you're an emotional eater, a mindless eater or whatever your trigger point is. The surgery will help, but there is work you have to put in as well.

I still love sweets, I too was hoping to not like them or not be able to tolerate them.

I will be 2 years post op January 14th. I have no regrets. This was the best decision I ever made. It has changed my life drastically. The process gets better as time goes on. You learn to eat to live instead of living to eat. As your body change you will begin to appreciate going through the process even more. I had a rough 7-8 weeks post-surgery. Partly b/c I also had gallbladder, but eating anything resulted in diarrhea and I was just discouraged all the time. I didn't even care that I was losing so much weight because I felt miserable. Around 6-8 weeks I was wondering if I would ever feel normal again and I was regretting my choice. But I turned a corner very quickly and I'm at 4 months now. I feel great and have lost 50 lbs. I feel like my relationship with food has and is changing and I am very glad I had the surgery done. I hope you're feeling well at about 1 week out now!

9 weeks and no regrets. In fact, if I start talking about my surgery I'm going to start crying of joy. I was worried sick before surgery but all my fears were just that. It wasn't as hard as I thought, not even close. The first few days were challenging because drinking enough liquids was hard and I was afraid of getting dehydrated. Learning how to eat also took a few weeks because I am a slow learner and did not want to eat as slow as I'm supposed to. Learning that my stomach can only fit 1/4 cup of food also was a hard concept for me. I tried to have an extra bite and hello nausea. I also, learned that lion sized hunger is not there anymore. It's gentle and well behaved now. This makes everything possible. I don't feel deprived because I can eat anything. Even sweets. It's amazing how satisfying a single bite can be. I just don't have food urges controlling my life. I used to see people eat 1/2 a slice of dessert and wonder how they could leave 1/2 on their plate. It's exactly how I feel now. It is liberating not to be thinking of food all the time.

But the most amazing thing of all is how fantastic I feel. The weight coming off is nothing in comparison to how much energy I have. I had no idea this was going to be even better then expected. I swear I feel better then I have felt in 10 years and I am smarter, more focused then I could imagine. My cranky self is gone. I think being overweight was exhausting me to the point that life was getting unbearable. I was tired, sad, and miserable all the time. It's all gone. I have lost 51 lbs with 69 to go to reach goal. If I didn't lose another pound I would still say my surgery has been a success. I didn't know I was going to feel physically amazing. I was expecting that the weight loss would be a mental boost but what I am talking about is physical and real. It's almost like when you have a baby and everyone is happy for you but nobody can explain to you how much you love your child. Nobody can tell you how wonderful that is. I tell you with my surgery it's the same. I wish I could explain how wonderful it is because if I could, everyone with a BMI of 35 and above would be running to the hospital for WLS.

Only i didn't surgery sooner

9 weeks post-RnY here, and no regrets so far. The first 6 weeks were the most difficult, as not only are you saying goodbye to your old dietary lifestyle, but your'e also very limited at first with what you can eat- I was near certain that if I cut myself I would bleed chicken broth! However, following my surgeon's advice no matter how sick of each baby food stage served me well- I can now eat anything I like if I can tolerate it. Every now and then, I do miss my old soda habit, and night time Snacks, but seeing the changes in my body, and not having to take a handful of pills with dinner each night has been worth way more than anything else.
