After many problems of getting to St. Vincent in Indianapolis, I finally had a chance to go to a seminar at Community North in Indianapolis, ready for the next step. My sister and I are doing this together so that we can each have support through the process. Now to see the surgeon as soon as we can get in and talk to him. Thought I had my mind made up on the gastric bypass but now thinking the sleeve would be better. What is the major difference in the two ? Was it hard for anyone else to decide?

For me the sleeve was an easy decision over bypass. But that was based on my medical history of ulcerative colitis. My good friend had a bypass and is very happy with her decision 5 years later.

It's a very individual decision based on your own personal medical history. I know people that have been successful and people that have regressed on both surgeries. There are so many factors involved .

The surgery is def not a quick fix. It's changing eating habits for life - regardless of what you choose .

I guess I just need to do more research and weigh the pros and cons of both surgeries. I definitely know it's not a quick fix and that it will take some hard work to be successful. I also accept that there needs to be a life change as well. I am just so ready to get my life on track and learn how to be a healthier me.

I originally was going to have the sleeve and prepared for it all the way to less then a month before surgery I switched to have the bypass.

The reason for this was because of GERDS, diabetes and a few other things.

Both my gastric doctor and surgeon felt it was the best option for me and I went with their knowledge since they knew about these things better then I did.

You have to go with the surgery that YOU are most comfortable with and you must discuss with the surgeon what is best for your health history.

I am having my surgery in December and I seem to be so concerned with the eating portions OMG will I be able to handle that will my body shift in adjustment. Will I every\ be able to eat crab leggs pasta ,my favorites again thats what I want to know HELP!!!!

oh yea will I hurt soooo bad for weeks after the surgery scary

hi. I am having bypass because of my diabetes. Did your surgery help with the diabetes?

I have type 1 diabetes and selected bypass. That's because it gives a big chance of stopping type 2 diabetes in its tracks if I were 15kgs less ATM I'll prob go for sleeve as my doctor suggested but because of my weight ATM he decided on bypass.

If it can help with type 2 diabetes it can surely help with my control issues of my type 1.

One of the things my surgeon wanted me to do was to have a meal with a person that had had the surgeries I was considering. It was my homework assignment. Ironically, I had done that before seeing her. I had dinner with a guy 3 months out from the sleeve and one year out from the bypass. Granted the time they were postop made a huge difference, but it definitely swung me toward the bypass. He could eat a cup of food, was more compliant than the sleeve and seemed happier. I'm also basing this on the knowledge of the individuals too....I don't know but maybe it could be enlightening for you somehow.....

I am in the same boat as you. At first I thought sleeve but now I'm thinking bypass. My mom and surgeon are both for sleeve but I like the fact that with the bypass you will get sick of you eat the wrong foods. That will keep me from cheating. I am going to talk to my surgeon more about it but that's where I'm at right now

I was leaning toward the sleeve but after talking with the surgeon have decided on bypass. My surgery is scheduled for 12/1 and I can hardly wait. I have some medical comorbidities that have been getting worse in the past 7 months. I just want to be out of pain and get my life back.

i was set on the sleeve but ultimately left it up to the dr since he is the expert...i had my meet and greet yesterday and he wants to do the by-pass....i have a significant amount of weight to loose and he thinks it will work better for me long term....plus he said the sleeve is still a new-ish procedure and they don't have enough data showing long term success rates...good luck with whatever you decide!

Thanks everyone. I'm really leaning towards the bypass now. I'm freaked out that we don't know the long term of the sleeve. Basically I've herd a lot of good things about the bypass but nothing really too positive or negative on the sleeve. Well I still have to qualify with insurance first

It sure did! I chose the RNY for that reason too- a diagnosis of Type II Diabetes. I was taken off of all of my medications the day before surgery, and advised to take a fasting sugar reading in the morning, and one before dinner time each day. I'm happy to say that 2 weeks out, my sugars have been consistently between 90-115.
