Any relapses re: smoking after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. Just wondering about the smoking situation? Has anyone smoked through the process? Or started again afterwards. I met someone during one of my classes that is smoking throughout the whole thing and hiding it. I've smoked a bit here and there and have surgery on nov. 5th. No more for me.

If I am not mistaken, there is a way they check for that and if you're still smoking, they won't do surgery...

My doc actually does a blood test for nicotine levels, and if you were a smoker refused to do surgery on you until you tested negative and stayed that way for a certain amount of time. Not a problem for me since I did not smoke, but made believers out of the smokers who tried to sneak smoke. She was the same way with the liver shrink diet. She has been known to open you up on surgery day, and if you had not followed the liver shrink diet she closes you without doing the surgery and you don't go back for surgery for at least a month.

Umm well I smoked up until the day of surgery. I told them I smoked and they said don't smoke 24 hrs. You need to tell the anesthesiologist if you smoke so they know. Also smoking Mary Jane is the same as nicotine. I had surgery sept 15th . No issues. I can tell you this I never want to smoke again after getting a second chance to better my life. You will see. Smoking is gross and you're about to get healthy!

I quit 2 months before surgery although my doctor never asked me to quit. I did it so I better my chances at recovery. I started to smoke about 6 weeks out again, stupid stupid thing to do, it was so hard to quit, now I will have to quit second time again...

By the way, if a surgeon would open me up and would decide not to do the surgery, close me back in, ahhhha just wait till I wake up and run for your life, I mean come on!!!!!!!!!!! I did not even had to do ANY diet before my surgery, so there should be no reason for the surgeon to do that stupid thing and refuse to do the surgery when I AM ALREADY ON THE OPERATING TABLE!!!! Why is that one surgeon can do the surgery without "liver shrinking" diet, and the other one can not?? I do not get it, but to close somebody back up is cruel and unprofessional.

I agree. There seems to be so much variation to the rules and requirements to each state or country or even surgeon from the same area. I've been on my liver shrinking thing for 3 weeks and I've had some slips, my farewells in between shakes.. I would just be so mad if they closed me back up knowing the next surgeon wouldn't think twice about doing it.

That's incredible. I know that smoking is just not an option for me afterwards. I'm in this for the long haul and to improve ALL aspects of my health.. I Need to find some cool new coping mechanisms, eating is out, turning to the bottle is a far away dream and not really something I even want to dabble back into and smoking is ridiculous.. So sex and knitting it'll be. Lol

My surgeon does a blood test the morning of surgery to check if there is nicotine in your system. If there is, he will cancel your surgery. Luckily for me there are no smokers in the house as living with one is enough to make you fail the test!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
