Any May 20th surgeries out there?

  • Popular Post

Hi everyone,

I have been on this forum a few months, but haven't really spoken up. I have just been like a sponge soaking up everyone's knowledge and experiences. I am so happy to say that I have been approved by BCBS for my sleeve surgery, and it will be on May 20th, which also happens to be my 8 year wedding anniversary! Anyway, I couldn't contain my excitement to start this new chapter in my life:-)

I've been on purées since Wednesday. If it's not soup I dont like it. Despite never eating more than 1/4 of a cup I want to throw up every time I eat - this is starting to ease though. I am losing heaps of weight (nearly 12 kgs). The worse symptom I have is this absolutely overwhelming weakness. My husband bought some hydrolyte from the pharmacy which helps a little. I am really pleased I had the surgery I am really looking forward to feeling like my 'old' self though.

Oh no Ozi......that's not good! I've been on puréed for a couple of days, and not having any problems at all ( unless the food isn't puréed enough, then I feel sick).

Have some carbs...soft pasta or well mashed potato etc. it may help with the weakness. It made a difference for me.

You've lost a stack of weight. I've only lost 7 kg's. Maybe your losing too fast and it's making you feel tired/ weak?

Best of luck x

Thanks. I discovered today that a small kfc potato and gravy (not at all nutritious) is the right size for a meal and I can keep it down, Didn't think I'd ever complain about losing weight too fast lol! I think your 7 kgs is pretty impressive. I think it's because I have more weight to lose than you that I am losing it quicker. Keep up the good work - it's obviously :-)

Haha.....I did that with a piece of Apple and it was good!

How long to go before you can chew?

I've been on ever decreasing Mushie foods for a few days. Supposed to be on puréed for two weeks but am over the sloppy texture. I figure if I take it slow and listen to my new tummy, no harm can be done. Plus I feel a lot more satiated.

I start purée Monday! So still no real chewing lol, but at least it's something besides shakes .. Can't wait

I am hanging out to chew too! I chewed a chip the other night then spat it out! Anything I've tasted puréed just doesn't do it for me. I have another week and a half of purées then a week of soft foods. Then normal food - mind you I have forgotten what normal food is. And 1/4 to 1/2 cup of food at a time means my normal will be a new normal not my old normal - if that makes any sense.

Makes perfect sense!

It's totally weird to be hungry, then only able to eat 1/4 cup of food......it's like 'hello, I was enjoying that and I don't want to stop!"

How are you feeling Ozi?

So sorry to hear that! Please hydrate more! It sounds like you are not getting enough nutrients or liquids in. I am on clear liquids and totally energized (sick of the liquids but full of energy). I ingest a ton of protein everyday-I use Isopure liquid (yuck, but I gag it down because it has 40g of protein per bottle-the tart apple and grape frost are the best IMHO), I also use bariatric products which are loaded with protein and have trace amounts of carbs (Syntrax nectars).

If you are having trouble with this phase, you need to supplement with liquid protein so you will feel better. Get some Powerade Zero (electrolytes) and sip on that throughout the day. Add an Isopure or protein shake to your day as well. If you use the protein powder, mix it with Almond milk and PB2 (powdered peanut butter) and add 1/4 banana to the shake as well for creaminess and additional potassium.

I hope you feel better soon. You should not be lethargic-something isn't right. If adding a protein supplement doesn't work, then please call your surgeon. You may be dehydrated or malnourished.

All the best to you!!

I licked 5 tortilla chips last night-it was hard not to bite or chew, but it was satisfying to suck on the chips. LOL. I would only admit that here. After that, I drank Tom Yum soup broth with unflavored protein mixed in.

I've been able to eat a veggie burger patty with mashed potatoes. I make it to about half the patty and some of the mashed potato until I get the urge to vomit. I stop immediately and get up and move around. The taste is wonderful and so is the chewing. It's really hard to not want to drink water with my meal. Is everyone burping constantly since their surgery?

That sounds great! Yes to the burping

I just mashed up a teaspoon of avocado to the point of purée and ate it.. Not starting purée until tomorrow, but I needed SOMETHING lol

It tasted great, my taste buds were so happy

Back to work today. First day back since I had surgery on May 26th. I am so not looking forward to this. I was enjoying getting up and going for a long walk then coming back to rest, play on the internet, watch movies, run errands and create fun protein broths.

I will especially miss my naps and time on the forum boards.

Good luck to all of us as we continue to heal, return to work and regular daily activities.

P.S. I am also on my final day of clear liquids!!!! I'm so happy to start full liquids tomorrow. I have my almond milk and thicker protein soups ready to go. It will be so nice to have a break from broth, sugar free popsicles, Isopure and jello!

How is everyone doing?

My weight has stalled out for the past week and a half. Not really worried, just sucks. Clothes fit great which is how I'm gauging success.
