May 2014 Sleevers

I finally got my insurance approval this week and my surgery is scheduled for May 20. If seems SO far away but hoping the time will fly by. I've been trying to adapt my diet to more like it will need to be post-op but find myself eating horribly about once a week. I think it's the food funerals starting. I did really well during the week and had lost 2 pounds this week and then last night after work ate whatever I wanted (it wasn't good). Are others going they this same struggle?

Would love to find people who are anxiously awaiting their May surgery dates and be here to provide support for each other as we start this journey to change our lives!

You are so sweet. They ruled out gallbladder, leak, didn't see a hernia. Bari dr doesn't care cuz it's not related to the sleeve. ER dr was really condescending and said that some people just don't handle pain as well as others. Wanted to punch him in the nose. Idiot. The pain didn't start until 8 days AFTER surgery and I was tolerating the surgery pain just fine w no pain meds up to that point. Anyway, we are on a wait it out and see if it improves strategy. It has gotten a bit better over the last few days, but still need the Lortab sometimes. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Gotta go back to work tomorrow regardless. Best of luck w your upcoming surgery. Is your pre-op diet ok?

That's ridiculous you're having to wait it out in so much pain. Amazing how little some humans care. My pre op diet is only 24 hours before and it's clear liquids. Please keep us posted.

Will do! Thx!

I had my sleeve on May 12 and am really struggling. Starting on May 20, I developed a horrible pain on my left side/back. It's pretty constant and really sharp. Even went to ER on Wednesday and they ruled out a leak or bowel obstruction or kidney stone. Doctors office is no help at all. Especially since ER doctor ruled out leak and the pain started a week after surgery so "it doesn't seem related to the sleeve." It is so debilitating. Anyone else having anything similar or heard of anything like this?

I had right back pain for the first week and it was sore muscles. If you can't get in your fluids; is it cause your nauseous? Do you need a nausea pill?

I hope it gets better, :(

Thank you! Are you doing better?

Yes the pain subsided once I started walking more and being more active!

I start soft foods tomorrow!! Which last night I had half of a bones skinless chicken thy. I put garlic, fresh rosemary and basil (from my garden) olive oil and lemon juice in my mini chopper and made a marinade. The thys got happy in the marinade over night, then I just grilled them up, cut one in half, small spoonful of mashed potato and whala! I took small bites and chewed really well. Did fine!

I love cauliflower but for me the mash was blah.... Have you noticed your taste buds have changed?

Yes, it's changed tremendously! I'm open to new things, I look at everything I buy! I read the labels! I bought some really thin shaved turkey, and that thin bread! I made a sandwich, it was good!

When I first heard of the puréed meat stage, I gaged but now I would purée a paper bag I'm so desperate for actual food!

Anyone else feel completely exhausted? I can't even get through a food shopping trip without wanting to sit down. Normal?

Sandi

I am exhausted! I have moments of energy followed by hours of exhaustion and I'm on day 8 of only clear liquids. A week from today I can have my first purée and I am so excited.

The steak purée and marinated chicken idea sounded incredible. I'm hungry and not hungry at the same time.

Haven't told many people and people are trying to make lunch and dinner plans and I don't know what to say since I want to socialize but can't eat. Find a broth only restaurant?

My 1st day as human. May 7th was my sleeve date and this is the 1st really good day i have had. Really good. Great day. Oh it does get better.

Indeed! I had watermelon, it was so freaking good!

Oh, watermelon, yummmm.

I'm on pre-op liquid and one small meal diet but no fruits or fruit juice. My post op diet looks like a week of liquids followed by 2-3 weeks of soft/slushy/pureed food but from what I've seen on these boards, that seems early for food. I'm tempted to stick to liquids as long as I can while stitched up stomach heals.

Should I expect problems with food just over a week after surgery? I'm doing well on pre-op diet but not sure how the post-op experience will be. Seems like no way of predicting whether recovery will be horrible or not so bad.

My post op diet is the same as yours. First 2 days after was clear liquids, then 1 week of full liquids, then week 2-3 purée, 4-8 soft foods and after that back to normal. Right now I'm in week 3 and start week 4 on Friday. Which I have have been incorporating a soft food into my diet. All is going well. I am down 17 lbs since May 7th (surgery date) and other than the fact that I tire easily and my stomach muscles are in pain I feel really good.

Count me in... Had my sleeve done last week on may 23... Everything went well but the nausea and dry heaves nearly kicked my butt.... Even though I was taking all the meds they could give me, I still got so sick so ended up staying in the hospital 3 days bc I couldn't keep anything down in my own... Crazy.... But home now, no more nausea, doing shakes and liquids, haven't taken pain meds for the last 25 hours... So far so good... Excited to be in this journey... It's amazing to feel physical restriction when drinking or eating soft foods...I never seemed to ever feel that so would always over eat bc something tastes so good... Such a surreal feeling now...

Very exhausted though

When does the energy come back ??

It took my 3weeks but now i feel pretty good. Still a little tired in the pm. But today i started on solid food. I had grilled chicken and squash. It was yummy, i only ate about 1/2 cup total but it was good. Kinda just sits right there on your new tummy. Went for a walk and felt better. I hope you continue to improve.
