Yesterday I went rogue....

and I drank my water out of a straw. Best choice ever. Since surgery I have not reached my water goal, EVER. Yesterday I got in 32 oz. I felt amazing. I knew I was dehydrated, and now I know what it's like to at least be somewhat, kinda hydrated. Straws are my life now. #sorrynotsorry. I couldn't take another day not drinking.

I did the same at month 4! I NEEDED to get that water in and could not do it without a straw! Make everything easier, including that morning protein shake! Hail to the straw!

  • Thats how I felt too. It wasn't strickly forbidden, but def not encouraged. I just can't do the sipping. Ice water through a straw is the only way I can really tolerate water.

I'm a month out and I use a straw everyday. Just sip slow. I haven't had any problems at all. Good luck

We can't use straws? What's the reasoning on that?

My drinks in the hospital all came with straws, and when they did my leak test, yep through a straw. I was never told no straw, just to take it slow until the swelling went down. I use a plastic cup from Disney, with Stitch on it and wouldn't give it up for anything. It makes me happy, and I get my water in by using it. :)

. That's so funny! It never occurred to me we all used a straw for the leak test!!! My NUT said if it didn't cause reflux or gas go ahead.

hey all, my doctor said no straw because you suck in air and it will expand your pouch and stretch it, what do we think of this? I use ONLY straws now, I cant get water down any other way, I don't see post op being any different, any feed back would be awesome, im deathly afraid of stretching out my stomach.

Unfortunately every doctor gives different instructions and there is so many reasons behind them. I started using straws early out and my doctor was ok. He said that straws can make some people feel uncomfortable but if I was feeling ok to go with. He wasn't concerned with the sleeve being stretched. Hopefully there will be some actual research soon so that WLS patients can avoid some undo stress.
