Freaking Out

Ok I am 3 weeks until my sleeve. My pre-op diet starts in 1 week. I am trying to just watch what I eat this week in preparation for my pre-op diet. I am starting to get really nervous about the actual surgery. I am not nervous about the post op diet or changes, I am ready for it. I am just scared about the surgery. Any suggestions to help me get through the next 3 weeks?

What exactly are you afraid of, the anesthesia, the pain, etc...... You need to narrow it down and address it with the surgeons office. I've had two operations in the last 3 months and I had very good experiences with both because I drilled my doctor so I understood everything she was going to do. I asked about different scenario's and options until I was comfortable and felt like I had control. I did know from a prior procedure that I would have a bad reaction to a specific anesthesia, so I made sure everyone and their brother was aware of that. Take control, ask questions.....knowledge should help you Pepper. Good Luck.

I was in full on freak out mode... about the surgery. I was especially afraid of the anesthesia. Meeting with the anesthesialogist gave me so much peace of mind... he promised me he'd keep me breathing and just gave me alot of reassurance. I get sick from general and they gave me an anti naseau cocktail that kept me from vomiting. i still felt like crap for a few hours, but compared to some previous experiences, it wasn't too bad. I think in hindsight, what i was REALLY afraid of was losing 85% of my stomach and still being obese but at the time all that anxiety focused on my fear of stopping breathing during surgery.

I have said this lots of times, but i find over and over and over again on this journey that I worry about the wrong things...LOL. I promise you that the surgery itself, even those first few weeks of recovery which can be hard... is really not the main thing... for many of us now just a distant memory. The main thing is changing your relationship with food and eating. That is quite a "row to hoe" and is a long term deal.

I know you will be fine and will have amazing success! Believe in the wonderful possibilities that lie ahead; keep your eye on the prize!

I totally understand your fears because I had a bad experience with anaesthesia when I had surgery on my nose years ago. However I talked to the doctors and they gave me some anaesthesia that knocked me out in under 60 seconds.

Good advice from the last person. Try to determine what is most bothering you and speak directly to your doctor.

  • I had my surgery 3 days ago. It all went smoothly. I was out, then I was awake. Easy as pie! You will do well too. The pain after surgery is easily managed with meds. Don't psyche yourself into having negative thoughts. The professionals know what they are doing. <Make sure your concerns are not just you telling yourself you are not ready for this life change. If you are ready to do this, make a change, be a healthier more productive you, GO FOR IT!! We have one life and one body. What are you going to do with yours?

I am 7 days out and dont feel like I even had surgery. That part was the easiest! It is truely more difficult to change ur relationship with food. Today I wanted a sandwich. I think it was just head hunger but I was actually hungry for it. Lol

I still have the fear that they really didnt take my stomach out, that I will always be the fat girl with a pretty face.

Address what you r afraid of. Write it down and talk to your doc about it. Talk to your team. That is what they r there for honey!

Well said E-young! I am 3 days out from surgery. I want real food to eat! But I know that will come in time. I have only lost 1 pound! What gives????

Tamik, your body is full of liquids and gas still. Weight loss will come. It takes a bit longer in some ppl. I am in the same boat. I was actually up 8 pounds 2 days out. I am not stepping on the scale until I feel comfortable wearing jeans again. Thats just a personal thing tho.

Good luck!
