So the staples stay in you for ever ? With out any maintenance. I was thinking about this and wondered , the long term effect , like when I'm 70 years old will this affect my life ? Once again I'm over thinking , I have my doctors appointment today and I need to schedule my surgery but I'm so unsure

I dont know how i bumped in here but i did. I have a sleeve originally i wanted a plication and went to see surgeon for plication, but he said with the weight i wanted to loose he recomended a sleeve.Good luck to you btw what were you so unsure of?

They don't use staples with the plication, but do with the sleeve, is my understanding. They use stitches with the plication.

FattoPhat is right, they use sutures, not staples with plication. As for long term, they haven't been doing the procedure long enough to know what happens years or decades down the line. I just had VSG a month ago but researched Lapband, plication and sleeve before deciding on the sleeve.

One of my concerns with the plication was exactly that unknown factor. As you all probably know, there has been a lot of long term problems that have come up associated with the Lapband. One of these is erosion of the band into the stomach tissue. Well if a fairly wide, soft band can erode in, why wouldn't a thin, sharp suture do the same thing down the road? This and the possibility of disrupted blood supply, resulting in the necrosis of stomach tissue and eventually a leak, even months or years after surgery were the main reasons I went with the sleeve. Yes, the short term complication rate of the VSG is higher vs plication, but I just wasn't willing to risk the unknown long term complications.

Good luck to everyone with your decisions and surgeries. I don't mean to scare anyone, but just thought I'd share my thoughts. I didn't have the plication, so I am by no means an expert and I'd advise everyone to take my post as strictly a single opinion. Only time and experience will tell if my fears were warranted.

so far so good and 153 pounds loss......am glad i had the surgery i did.

JUST THROWING THIS OUT THERE. If the plications busts a stitch, nothing can leak out because there is no cutting. If the sleeve busts a staple , bowel can leak into the peritoneal cavity and cause sepsis and even death. I discussed this with my surgeon long and hard before getting the plications. I'm a nurse and can tell you right fast, I've seen results of bowel in the abd. Just sayin....

Sandy, I thought the same thing- how can people have leaks when there is no cutting? But there are a couple people on this site who claim near death incidents of leaks from plication (I hate to sound this way but damn near every time someone has a complication, they were rescued from death's doorstep). Don't know what's true and what isn't, but they are on here.

By the time they get in there, there's a chunk of dead stomach tissue with leakage into the abdominal cavity. Reasons I found for the interrupted blood supply have ranged from poor surgical technique (sutures too tight or poorly spaced), or popped stitches which results in an uneven plication line and an outpouching of part of the stomach that became necrotic, to no known reason. The scary part for me is the complications happened many months after a seemingly successful surgical recovery. I'd be stresses about it the whole time.

Unfortunately all WLS has risks and individuals should research all the options and speak with their doctor to find out which procedure (if any) they feel comfortable with.

I agree that all surgeries have their risks. Something to remember here is that with any surgery, complications aren't always immediate or just within the healing phase. I've been a nurse for 22 years and have seen this to be true. My surgeon and I discussed this and I feel confident in his skills as I knew his reputation long before my surgery. You are correct that it also depends on the surgeons technique which can also have ramifications long after surgery....with any surgery. But, a lot depend on how your own body handles things. Ulcers are an example of one thing that seems to have nothing to do with surgery at all, but if it happens in the seam line of the incision...yes can eat right through. But, it can happen anywhere in the stomach and do the same thing. You can also have necrosis and scar tissue buildup at any surgery site. I had a pt who had bypass 8 years ago put on hospice 2 years ado because her scar tissue went wild and started strangulating everything in their path. Is this a reason to not have the surgery? It is certainly a risk to be considered when making ones decision.

I have also said before and will say it again...the reason we see the worse case scenarios here is because those with problems search out answers and come to these forums to get answers and verbalized concerns. Those without move on and live their lives. I'm here for the support with my weight loss and eventually will drift away myself when I no longer that. But, like others here, if I do have problems, I'll be back too.
