So I went to my pre op class today there wad four other woman in there with me 1 was getting the band an the other 3 the sleeve I was the only one getting RNY I felt a Lil weird but I told them I look in to them an to me the worst is the band an there's not enough results on the sleeve that I felt I was making the right choice one lady said her friend had sleeve was doing great n she had one who did RNY an was having nothing but problems I still feel that rny is best choice but it was just a Lil Discouraging

Don't worry, I too believe RNY is the best choice. You are right about the studies and take into account that some people just don't feel comfortable with all the rearrangements done to their intestines, so they pick sleeve or least invasive band.

Don't get discouraged. I started out thinking I wanted the band because it is reversible, then learned the downsides. Next I looked at the sleeve, but reading some studies that pointed out some concerns with the long term effects. I know many people are happy with their sleeves, but I am older and a revision would not be an option for me if the sleeve didn't prove helpful. In the end, I chose RNY for its track record. Initially, I was put off by the plumbing rearrangement, but my surgeon has done about 6,000 WLS, so I figured he has this all down pat by now. I sailed through surgery and my first months of recovery. I'm very glad I had this done and only wish I'd had it six years earlier when I first looked into it. All things in due time, I guess. It helps to read the posts on various forums about the different surgeries to learn what issues may arise. You just have to keep in mind that most posts are from the small subset of people with issues--the thousands who haven't had problems are out living their lives. Best wishes on your journey!

Aren't people funny, they want the sleeve (which is newer than the band and has even less research done so far) because they don't want their intestines re-arranged, yet they are okay that 2/3's of their stomach will be removed and put into a hazardous waste bag. I had the band, and though I actually didn't have a problem, had I known then what I found out after it slipped (still didn't have a problem)I would have gone with the bypass. At least if the bypass didn't work it can be reversed. As the saying goes "Hindsight is always better than foresight".

I was told bypass was irreversible too

While the bypass is technically reversible, it is very, very rarely done. I was told it might be done in some cases of stomach cancer, but that too is rare. I didn't think it wise to include that factor in my ultimate decision to go with the RNY. Besides, I didn't want to go into this thinking there was an "out". To be successful, I learned I really had to accept to the core of my being that I was making a permanent and positive change to my body in order to be healthy and happy. I hope you can find similar peace with your decision.

Oh I'm confident in my choice for rny I told them how there's not enough study on the sleeve its just the new fad an the band heck no I just felt kind of alone in this class just thought there would be other rny choosers

With such a small group, it's hard to draw any conclusions. At the larger center I went to, the pre-op classes might have 50 people so there was a lot of diversity.

Whatever you have done, it is a lifetime decision, so at my age, I'm not looking at just today but 10-15 years from now. We don't know what lies in our future including our health, so I wanted to make sure to include all factors, if possible, that might become a possibility. I wasn't thinking it was a way out, but if some health condition arose, which meant it needed to be reversed it could be, as with the band. Not much can be done though when you are only working with 1/3 of a stomach as is the case with the sleeve. I had a patient who had it bypass done years ago, and the nephrologist I worked for, wanted the patient to have her's reversed. She was having to have iron infusions and they were becoming more difficult and her kidneys were failing. I am a person who tries to weigh all positive and negative, ifs and what ifs, in case something might happen that could require reversal. Plus if any doctor would reverse it just because a patient wanted it reversed, then they need their license pulled. Ultimately the decision and how it made is up to that individual though.

Yes it was a small group they do a couple classes a day so an I get all the support n info from here I love this forum I was telling g the ladies at the class bout it an that they have one for the sleeve!!

Heck I thought they were all non reversible so well the sleeve n rny but I just see so many people having to get revised to rny from others so im like do it right the first time!!

I also thought by going the distance with the RNY, I would avoid the possible need for sleeve and band revisions that I was reading about. However, there are other things to consider, like not being able to take NSAIDS ever again. If you develop arthritis as you age, you will miss out on a major class of pain relievers. I'm way past that point and about to have my 2nd joint replacement, but it is a valid concern.

I have arthritis in both knees at 43 an my back just started but I don't take those meds anyway I don't like them I am on percocet n muscle relaxers for pinch nerves one in right side of neck I need surgery on but waiting till next year cuz u have to me out of work so long an I hope getting some weight off will help
