A friend who had gastric bypass b4 me said her doctor said only crush for 1st month to let pouch heal then u can take them normally? What do all u think?

I'm not saying go against your doctors plan, but I never had to crush my pills period. I went home with oxycodone, and now take glucosamine without any issues.

Ask your doctor why you should do this, mention that others do not have the restriction, and see if you get a reasonably satisfactory response.

I was given my daily meds in the hospital, starting the day after surgery. For one larger pill, I was given two smaller capsules that added up the same dose but told I could go back to my normal pills when I got home. I was just instructed to take them one at a time, about 15 minutes apart with a little bit of Water. Haven't had any problems doing this.

I wasn't even told to take them anytime apart. I was given percocet pill form in the hospital. I went home taking them and was never given any precautions on it. I DO drink Decaf coffee whenever I take gel pills to make sure the gel gets dissolved in time. I've found my stool softener is a miracle drug if I do. Before it was hit and miss, so for me, I'll only take gel coated pills with warm liquid.< /p>

Same here, don't crush my pills and take them one at a time but not spread out. Will see next month how it goes when I have to have a complete blood work up again.

I had to crush my pills or take a liquid equivalent for one month. After that I could take pills if they were no larger than a Tylenol tablet. If it was larger I was told to crush them or cut them. I have trouble with pills larger than that getting stuck.

I was told specifically NOT to crush them by my surgeon. In fact, the first 48 hours I was in the hospital, the nurses were crushing my meds and he gave them a talking to... < Even though all of the other surgeons the nurses work with insist that they crush pills for their patients... What's a poor nurse to do?... Darned if you do, darned if you don't B-)>

At any rate, his instruction to me was all pills must be cut smaller than Lincoln's head on a penny... And I have not had any problems at all... it actually made taking them a lot easier than trying to push down crushed pills in liquid....yuck... And no matter how much I tried, I never really got all of the med in...

Good luck to you!

I was swallowing whole pills when I was in the hospital the day after surgery. Every doctor is different but mine go down just fine and always have. Some things may be immediate release, or extended release however and this may be why he wants them crushed. One of my pills need to be changed before surgery. Follow your doctors orders!

Check with your pharmacist before crushing extended release or timed release meds. Crushing them effects how they release/work... Also ask the pharmacist for liquids that might be available

Take it from a Bandster (not RNY yet)...if YOUR doc says crush pills, crush pills. Do not crush extended release pills as that defeats the purpose as they will dissolve immediately and you don't want that with an extended release pill. --------------When I was banded eons ago, I had major pill issues. I'm on some other meds, two of which are huge IMO. With pharmacist's ok, I cut them with a pill cutter, or broke with my fingers, then I crushed with a pill crusher. Then there was the issue on just how to tolerate the wickedly awful taste.------------IF you are allowed these foods, I really don't know....take a smidge (technical aren't I?) of SF/FF pudding, stir the pill(s) in it. Put it in your mouth and swallow as fast as you can! Don't rub your tongue around your mouth, it'll make you taste the pill. Psych yourself out that you're not really doing this (but you are) and QUICKLY follow with another smidge, or more if you're allowed and use that as a chaser, or the rest of a meal, whatever. You might get a teeny taste of pill, but it'll be tolerable. You could also use yogurt. Dissolving a pill in liquid is disgusting no matter how you spin it. So if you can eat pudding or yogurt, try this. If you can have more of a pudding/yogurt chaser, the better! ------------ I had to do this for a lonnnnggg time, part of bandster hell. But it worked.----------------if your doc says to crush, HE must have a reason, always follow your Doc's orders. From what I hear, you don't have to do it long. Yay! Just ask your pharmacist about cutting or crushing any pill. I'm joined at the hip with MY pharmacist, we have a great relationship.------------Good luck on your exciting journey! :D

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
