If you can meet your daily requirements of protein from real foods you won't need the shakes. You will have to drink the shakes as a supplement as long as you aren't able to eat the foods or you aren't meeting the daily requirements. I am 5 months out and I don't drink them anymore. I hated them. But my hair is thinning too.

My doctor told me to start the protein shakes 5 days after surgery. I had to pass gas first then start my 5 day count. Not sure what this was for, but this is what I was told and what I did. Do not buy a lot before surgery though, because I did and ended up not liking any of what I bought. I wasted so much food after surgery because my taste changed so much after surgery I couldn't eat or drink what I could before. Get a good sample of quite a few different ones before. As far as what you can put into proteins shakes just about anything you can stomach...everything has to be liquid and try to keep the acid down. I just drank the premixed ones. I am currently doing premier protein because it is 1 gram of sugar and 30 grams of protein.

Muscle milk light is my most favorite!! Taste great 100-160 calories and 15-20 g of protein they have different size containers. Love the chocolate! And fills the sweet tooth! Had to do them two weeks pre op n two weeks post then puréed for two weeks then can start reg food starting with softer food

But after surg my dr said drink only water untill I feel I can stomach to take more in. Hydration is more important at first then the protein. U do need the protein but they really want u hydrated so start shakes when u feel I can.
