So 3 days from op day and back at home. Nights have been difficult but each day has got easier. I have had to sleep upright in bed as lying down is uncomfortable. Gas was the most difficult post op aspect, it just wouldn't let up, bad ache of the back and neck, today its mercifully gone. Feel like I can walk into town etc but told to take it easy because one can set everything back by overdoing things. Clexane injection has been difficult, I found I just couln't give it to myself and the wife was less than keen, 6 more days of those...oh what fun. On the positive side, this seems like the first time in my life I have not been hungry...i.e. thinking its lunchtime etc, I just don't feel hungry and I am quite happy with the small quantity of clear soup I have. I am thrilled with that and know I am on the path to a new me :-)

Congrats on the start of a new you!!! I also had to sleep upright for the first week and had a ton of gas pain and nausea but I was ok as long as I kept my nausea patch on!

Thanks Vamp. I didn't get any nausea at all, I suppose that people vary. They gave me a couple of anti nausea doses into the IV in the first 24 hours but no patches or anything. On the meds front took away From hospital: the anti-coagulent Clexane (think that Heparin) injection syringes for 1 week, long term supply of chewable antiacids called zoton fastabs (lansoprazole) and some soluble paracetamol (which I haven't needed as no longer any pain).

Congrats!! I was the same after the op couldn't lie flat but within the week I was lying on my side n not long after on my tummy hehe xx I had shoulder/neck pain 2 days after realeased from hospital it was horrible. I left the op with antacids which I took for 4 weeks and some adult calpol, which I only took once for he gas shoulder pain! I never had any injections to bring away or patches tho. Good luck with ur new life :-)

Thanks jemjem. Yes worse luck I got given these injections to take for a whole week and I hate them. Anybody approaching my exposed belly with a syringe isn't very welcome....and then to try to inject oneself :-( You were seriously lucky. However interesting to hear our stories are so similar, I hope this will help others reading this to worry less or be prepared better. Thanks.

Thanks Berniec, yes I have been helped so I am happy to pass on my own experiences. Got fed up with sleeping upright last night and lay on my side, bit uncomfortable but it was a pleasure, feels like life is getting back to normal 4 days after the op. I can assure you that if the surgeons have agreed to operate then there isn't anything to worry about for your op, its production line surgery, but the 24-hours after the op are not very pleasant. Good luck and I am sure you can't wait to get it over.

Tor I am excited. I can't wait. Do they give you a prescription for pain medicine when you leave the hospital. I had my gallbladder removed 4years ago. That wasn't too bad. I can tolerate pain unless it's excruciating pain. Oh well ilI deal with that when I get to it.

I think they will give painkillers if you want otherwise Paracetamol is fine and I took it only once because of air build up causing neck and backache. They offer co-codamol but I refused because that is codein based and causes constipation and after the 1st 24-hours I didn't need heavy painkillers. It seems they vary on what they give you. I appreciate your excitement, its all about getting it over and looking forward to the new you, thats a universal theme on this forum :-)

One weird outcome has been that over the 3 days of post op I actually gained 2 Ibs, probably due to the glucose drip and other liquids one takes on board post op. But this morning (day 4) I lost 2 Ibs, so the ball is rolling

I gained about 6/7lbs when I was in hospital lol but it everything they pump you with, I lost it couple days after being home and more right away :-)

Its certainly weird but logical I suppose. On my liquid diet stage now, found my best lunch is heating a couple of tablespoons of white wine (drives off the alcohol) adding a dash of worcestershire sauce and a cup or so of simple chicken stock, heat and serve. It can be fortified by adding a tablespoon or 2 of clear beef soup. Yummy, keeps me going fine :-)

Congrats on the new you. The gas was the worse thing for me to...the pressure was unbearable! They said walking around would make me pass gas or belch. None of that happened....It finally went away after about a week or so.

Thanks Anjela, you are right mine hasnt gone away fully and I am walking all over the place and have since the op. Masses of peppermint tea too and that also didnt seem to help.

Fortunately that's one thing that did eventually get better. I've never tried peppermint tea. Does it help? Is it good? I've never had tea without sugar. I purchased a sugar substitute called Truvia that's supposed to be really good. Unfortunately I didn't like it at all :'(

I have a friend who just had surgery and she swears by ginger tea for the gas. I love peppermint tea but I'm going to get some ginger tea too.
