Old suit or New suit

Recommended Posts

I have an old very nice and expensive suit. The paints are 52 inch waste and coat is 50 inch. I would like to have the suit altered to my new weight and size if at all possible, to be honest the suit have sentimental value to me. My wife says, I should ditch the old suit and get a new one.

What would you do?

What do you think I should do?

I am feeling a new suit.

That might just be me. I am not very sentimental about my clothes. In fact I can't wait to clean out my closet and replace all my FAT clothes with new stuff.

You can think of it this way...If you get a new suit, it can be the beginning of new sentimental memories. It will be the first new suit marking your weight loss journey.

I am....I mean WAS sentimental about my clothes but I learned something on Hoarders. Your memories are in your brain, not in your clothes. I was seriously thinking of keeping some things like the shirt I was wearing when I first held my Granddaughter but I reminded myself of what they said and bravely took it all to donate.

Plus if they need to alter your suit very far, like from a 50 to a 36 or 38 they are going to have to cut it all apart and recut it, it wont be a simple tuck here and there.

If it can be altered and it's in style, keep it. I doubt it can be though, going down a lot of sizes. Things like arm holes might get off-kilter :) Maybe you can form an attachment to the new one - it represents your new life!

I've lost weight many times, and had lots of clothes altered. The thing is though, even altered, they are still my "fat clothes." I feel it holds me back. Go for the new life, and the new suit.

unless you are going to a 46-48 you wont be happy with it and it will confuse your sentimental attachment. I did this once and they could alter one size without problem, past that and you might as well get remnants and piece them together. Listen to the woman and get yourself an ok suit then when you hit your target get a new expensive wonderful suit and start a new attachment to that one. IMHO.

That is my plan. I am losing size too fast to stay in one size long enough to wear it much.

Maybe check for a second hand suit to get you to goal? I would put the old suit up and when you hit goal take a picture of yourself in it to show how far you have come. I have the outfit I wore to the hospital the day of my surgery put away for just that purpose. I have been donating to a domestic violence shelter, they run a thrift store to pay their bills. Since I buy my smaller clothes there really cheap, I don't mind re-donating them when they are baggy. I have been through so many sizes that my hubby jokes that I only rent my stuff, since it goes back to them when I'm done. And since I'm there so often, and such a good customer, they call me when they get a large donation of things in my current or next smaller size. I'm in a 12 right now but have bought some 8's and 10's because they were cheap, and really nice brand name things.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
