I am 3 days post op and obviously still on liquid diet but was never told how to take my pills. I take a daily metformin, simovastin, levothyroxin and birth control. Plus I had 2 Vitamin c gummies, 2 b12 gummies, and a chewable Multivitamin. How can i take these pills on a liquid diet? The most solid thing I've tried to eat is a little scoop of Jello and that wasn't tolerated well.

u probably should crush them. if they are in capsules, u can open them

I use gummies no problems so far.

You should NOT crush every type of medication!! Phone your doc to be sure. As a simple rule, if the bottle says "don't crush or chew"- then don't.

You CAN crush your synthroid but your metformin - probably not. I'm surprised you're still on bc so soon after surgery. My doc took me off. Really not sure about your 'statin.

If you have any type of extended release, they cannot be crushed.

I was taking pills from my second day out. In fact, they gave me both norco and a medication I take for migraines before I went home from the hospital. It was very uncomfortable to swallow them for about a week, but the applesauce/yogurt trick didn't work for me. I could taste the pills and feel them burn as they went down. :'(

You may want to check with your surgeon to make sure gummies are okay for you (I was told not to take them, since they could get stuck or cause discomfort).

I had to stop taking my BC a month before surgery, due to the blood clot risk, and my doc and surgeon still aren't comfortable with me taking it.

The metformin they were crushing for me at the hospital and giving with pudding and they pushed the birth control the first day and I actually had to refuse it because I got so nauseous from eating the crushed pills. I'm not having sex any time soon and my birth control doesn't regulate my hormones or anything other than pregnancy prevention so I told them NO I do not want it today. I was mainly questioning the gummies because my stomach was pretty upset with the Jello I just tried and I sucked on that until it was solid liquid so idk if gummies will hurt. I'm concerned I'm not getting enough nutrients because all I've had is Water and some 100% fruit juice diluted. Tried jello, threw up a swallow of Protein shake, so I want to take the Vitamins ASAP to help get my nutrients in.

Just read the bottle for metformin and it CLEARLY says do not crush. Needless to say I've had an absolutely horrible experience at this hospital with these nurses and I will NEVER go back there. Not only did she force me to eat chocolate pudding which pissed my doc off big time because he had not done my swallow study yet but she also gave me not one but 2 doses of a crushed med that she was not supposed to!!! I'm just all around pissed off at the whole experience. Surgery was a success but so far every moment of misery is directly related to carelessness on a nurse there. 100% better now that I am HOME and caring for myself, aside from comfort issues. I am going to cautiously avoid all meds until I meet with my doc on the 16th. Thank you for giving me concern to check my bottle!!!

BUT sometimes in hospitals Drs allow us to bc the patients are under such close care by us with lab work and frequent blood sugar checks. But I (personally) would never tell someone to take it crushed at home.

But you can absolutely crush your synthroid! COMPLETLY safe to do so.

And I agree w/ you on being home-- that's why I chose a doc who does outpatient surgeries.

If you don't already, I'd suggest checking your blood sugar a couple times a day. You can buy a meter at the drug store for under $10. If you blood sugar gets above 200, give your doc a call.

As long as they are NOT time release, you can crush them. Or of course the bottle says not too

The reason for the metformin wasn't because of diabetes which has been confusing all the nurses as well. I was prescribed it for my PCOS. I never ever had irregular blood sugar which was odd but my weight made me a candidate for pre diabetes so I think she kept an eye on it just in case. I have never checked my blood sugar or even had regular lab work for it, although I do regularly check my thyroid and other levels, so I'm not even sure what to do! Mg primary doctor never told me that blood sugar was a concern just that she was prescribing it!

Although, it's usually used for blood sugar, it can also be prescribed for PCOS as well as for weight loss and insulin resistance. No confusion here. Lol. If you haven't had a problem yet w/bs that's fantastic! If it wasn't used for blood sugar, then I wouldn't worry about checking it.
