I have an embarassing question...

I'm not quite sure who to ask. Over the past 2-3 months I've noticed the skiing around my neck turning dark. Also the skin under my arm pits, and I little around my "groin" region. I googles it and it said diabetes, but I'm not diabetic, or even pre diabetic. Can it be just from being heavy? Has anyone ever had this? And will it go away if I lose the weight? It looks like dirt, but I'm quite attentive to my hygiene so I know it's not.

  • Look into the symptoms of PCOS. Darker skin on neck, armpits, and groin is common for that. It's the first thing that popped into my mind.

Definitely not pregnant!! Lol. Ive had 2 kids (ages 3.5 and 1) and never had that symptom. Any other symptoms of pcos? And would chaffing cause color change? My neck doesn't chafe, there's a slight cr

  • When's your next doctor visit? Might be worth mentioning--especially if there's a family history. It sounds like it might be hormonal (pregnancy/PCOS causing similar issues), if it's definitely not

Does it feel any different? Like the skin is more tough or leathery? My doc said its a sign of obesity but does go away with weight loss. I'd have it checked out though. Best of luck!

I have PCOS and my skin under my arm pits and thighs are darker.

Do you know if it will go away when I lose the weight?

Yes!! If it is due to that it will go away at least that's what the doctor told my friend.

Any reason to think your hormones might be a little off balance? For example, do you take an oral contraceptive?

Here's a link about acanthosis nigricans (darkening skin in the areas you mentioned):

Vix. You nailed it on the head! I have this as well, it sucks! My doctor told me the same thing that's mentioned in your link.

I agree with some of the other comments - you should talk to your doctor about PCOS. What you are describing is acanthosis nigricans and it is usually seen in people with insulin resistance (a major part of PCOS) and obesity...trust me, I have it too and I am very fair. Once managed, the dark patches will fade over time becoming less and less noticeable.
