Gallstone prevention

Who takes meds to prevent gallstone formation? Are they over the counter or do you need a script? What is the med?

For anyone who developed gallstones post sleeve, how far out from surgery were you when you developed them?

Thanks.

Script from doctor. I had gallstones before being sleeved. My surgeon didn't want to take my gallbladder out at the same time as the sleeve surgery. I needed a pretty severe hiatal hernia fixed and my Sleeve done, so adding the gallbladder would have kept me under anesthesia for too long. I have issues w anesthesia.

Unfortunately, it needed to come out 6 weeks after my sleeve surgery. Yeah, that wasn't a fun time. :-(

I took ursodiol. My surgeon prescribed it starting at about 2 weeks out. I just got off of it finally. No gallstone issues thankfully.

My doctor gave me a RX for Ursodiol-300mg that he had me take from day 1. So far so good, knock on wood!
