How do you decide?

I feel like they are STRONGLY encouraging me to to go rny because of my Diabetes (t2).

Thoughts?

Looks like research shows both work for type 2 diabetes, but bypass may give you an increased chance of better results.

RESULTS:

Of the 60 patients enrolled, all completed the 12-month follow-up. Remission of T2DM was achieved by 28 (93%) in the gastric bypass group and 14 (47%) in the sleeve gastrectomy group (P = .02). Participants assigned to gastric bypass had lost more weight, achieved a lower waist circumference, and had lower glucose, HbA(1c), and blood lipid levels than the sleeve gastrectomy group. No serious complications occurred in either group.

in the same breath the presenter said something about a lapband patient and his results that were awesome -- I still have time to decide but am stumped now - I was all about VSG until this morning.

I really think it has to do with the amount of weight you have to lose, maybe even the type of medication you are on now..

I am a type 2 diet controlled diabetic and had the sleeve done. When I left the hospital (2 days after surgery) my bs was in the low 70 and its been like that ever since. I feel great and accomplished. Good luck.

I was completely convinced sleeve was the way to go - and yesterday at a simple “intro” meeting my head is all turned upside down.

I have been Type 2 for 12 yrs - in decent control (a1c of 6.5) and haven’t really done anything “special” to make sure I was in decent control -

I wake up with readings like 165ish - I am a dawn riser - which means my liver pulses out overnight - being diabetic for 12 yrs I might also have done irreparable damage to my pancreas - I really don’t know.

My #1 reason for WLS is activity - at 200lbs OVERWEIGHT (according to the hideous charts) -- I don’t EVER recall being 140 -- and my #2 reason is the diabetes.

I will be seeing the surgeon in about 10 weeks and I am a researcher - when I found this place I thought ok - like minded people - I’m settled on the sleeve - now I’m not sure -

In the end it will be a decision me and my family make - just wondering about any other diabetics and their input...

I also have type II. I havent had to take metformin since my sleeve surgery. My blood sugar is now constantly between 90 and 120 after eating.

I'm confused too. I don't have diabetes but I do have a terrible sweet tooth. I love cakes, cookies, candy. I'm wondering if I will have better long term success with the bypass. But then I'm also worried about having to take all those vitamins and supplements for the rest of my life and worrying about what if something happens and I can't afford all the supplements.

I think the suppliments are needed no matter which procedure you have. My surgeon tried to push me into a RNY because my husband is a baker. I told him that was EXACTLY why I wanted the sleeve. I want to have a bite without getting sick. I don't want to eat half the darn torte.

This is what they said yesterday - I can keep taking diabetic meds forever - or I can take supplements - I have allot to loose and have been this heavy for a long time - I just don’t know how to decide.

Oh and I’m on victosa (which DOES NOT CONTROL APPETITE for me) and metphormin - nothing special - and my A1c of 6.5 wasn’t due to diet OR exercise - which was the whole reason I was prompted to get surgery - I don’t know “how long” I can be on these meds and be ok - 10 yrs (ok I did 12 already) 20, 30, 40 - I’m 44 now - and technically my life expectancy is another 40 - but not at this weight -

If I do sleeve - my insurance will cover additional WLS’s which is/was something I looked into - wanted to make sure it wasn’t a ONCE in a lifetime thing - as a just what if question - my insurance also covers medically necessary plastics --

I'm in the same boat here. I know I need to lose 250 or more pounds (no MD I've seen yet has a scale higher than 400, and I'm over that) and I just don't know if I should go for the bypass instead. I have an incredible amount to lose!

My deciding factor has always been "With the sleeve you don't have malabsorption". However, this doesn't mean we won't need lifelong supplements. Even if you ate the most balanced, perfect diet, you just can't eat enough of anything to get all the nutrients you need in. You will still have to monitor your levels and take supplements, just like RNY patients do. The advantage is that if you need to take medications, you won't have to get a special formula like RNY patients do. With VSG, you can't take NSAIDs, your risk for reflux and ulcers is much higher with the tiny stomach.

The other PRO I have is that VSG doesn't cause dumping... but I have a sweet tooth and can't help but think that maybe dumping would be a blessing in disguise, keeping me from eating things I shouldn't. But for me, I'd rather have a tool that allows me to still enjoy my life. If I get married, I want that wedding cake, even if it's just a bite or two. It seems like RNY is much more extreme, sort of whipping you into submission, whereas the sleeve is just a coach, helping me slow down, saving me from my own incessant hunger, and making me more mindful of what goes into my body. But if my period hits and I want chocolate ice cream, I can have it. In moderation, of course!

I'm definitely leaning toward VSG, but I do catch myself wondering if it will be enough to get me to goal... goal is like, 270lbs away!

Do not do the lap band ask your physician about sleeve results versus bypass. Almost everyone I know that got lap banned had Fluid build up or the band slipped and they ended up with sleeve anyway :*(

I decided on sleeve because I know people that have done the different procedures and their weight loss results etc. Sleeve seemed to be just as effective as bypass, but seemed safer. Since I have had it on Oct 17th I'm still on my clear liquid diet and completely content with it. I see commercials and my brain is like MMMM, but my belly is like whatever. I lost 10 lbs in the first 6 days. My friend lost 100 lbs in 4 months, another has lost and maintained 110 lb weight loss in 2 years that was her goal weight she hit it within 5 months and is maintaining problem free. My sister got bypass and lost 60 lbs in about 3 months and hasn't had any problems yet and another friend lost 150 lbs and has maintained it for 5 years and having 3 children 4, 1 1/2 and a 4 month old. Another friend had bypass and only lost 60 lbs in 7 months, but she complains about dumping all the time. So I just guess it depends on the results and side effects you are looking for. As a diabetic I didn't have to think twice about the sleeve. I rather take the Vitamins than having to take or deal with diabetes for the rest of my life.

The sleeve and the gastric bypass (rny) are 2 different procedures.
