A very close friend of mine recently had VSG done and he is included in the 1% who develop a leak. 3 days post op started to experience a lot of pain and shortness of breath, was taken to the ER and within a short amount of time was in the OR. A leak was detected and they were unable to do anything endoscopically so they had to open him up. Two drains were placed in the abdomen, stent placed in the stomach, PICC line inserted and a feeding tube placed in the small intestine to administer tube feeds. He is on antibiotics, IV fluids and tube feeds. He had this done at a large hospital very familiar with this type of surgery and has only had this happen twice. He is currently stable and was told that if all goes well and no further complications develop, home in 1 to 2 weeks but will be on tube feeds from 3-6 months and IV antibiotics. Has anyone gone through this or know someone that has? I have browsed the internet for hours and can't really find anything similiar to his situation. Thanks and wish you all the best!

Wow, his story is very sobering. I've seen just a couple posters here with serious complications like your friend. JASLEEVE had a very rough time with serious complications but I believe she is now doing well. I'm so sorry for your friend.

16 years old had a leak at `15 and half it's healed now.

We are in Ohio. Today the white blood cell count has gone up and they are trying a different antibiotic. Last night his breathing was pretty labored and BP was elevated. They gave some lasix to get rid of some the extra fluid building up in the lungs as he's been getting IV fluids and the tube feed. Today is his birthday, hoping things go good today

Now they found the wound to have MRSA and are getting ready to go back to the OR to drain an abscess. This is so scary

At this point, antibiotics and medical management are what he needs most. Just asking, he isn't intubated, is he?

Hi,I did my sleeve in German and I too had to undergo an open operation due to leakage.mine was worse coz I had three open operations due to a leak which couldn't heal.but at the end after 3months in ICU i am better and ok.stay blessed

They had to remove the staples the other day and are now packing the incision daily which he says is very painful and two days ago had to remove the stent because it migrated and place a new one. He is in a lot of pain and has been having a lot of nausea as well. One day at a time. Mememee, thanks for sharing the link

Still on the road to recovery. Finally been home for about 2 weeks, the longest stretch yet, but not without further complications. The stent migrated again and this time they place two more. One stretches into the end of the esophagus and the other into the beginning of the small intestine, the tube for the feeding literally fell out and yet another procedure. He is still on tube feeds and all meds are given through it. On the plus side the drains have all been removed, the wound is almost closed. Vomitting is continually problem. He has been out of work this entire time without much coming in and just overall feels horrible, weak and depressed. What a toll this has taken on the entire family and close friends.
