I'm on week 5 of the options program ...I'm excited to finish the class and start my new life!!!

I'm stressing about the 10% that I have to lose. Tracking is as bad as I thought it will be!!

Good luck to you all!

You can do this girl. Walk, walk, walk every day...and drink lots of Water. If you are still hungry at mealtimes, fill up with veggies then eat your meal, for lunch I used to eat 1/2 package of baby carrots, then my meal (Lean Cuisine or a sandwich or salad) then follow with a big navel orange or an apple. Keep yourself full and you won't need to cheat. I always had some SF Jello in the house and lite cool whip or Weight Watchers frozen ice cream bars if I needed a sweet. Stay in your calorie range and the weight will come off. Don't get discouraged, just keep focused.

I am having class 9 this friday, graduating Sept 14th. Our class brought up the 10% weight loss because it was acted by the instructors that it was "mandatory" and the lady we had that week ( I think it was a dietitian or psych) told us its PREFERRED. It makes surgery easier and shows your commitment, but they can't FORCE you to loose weight. They said that it makes you more likely for the surgeon to say go ahead with the surgery faster. I have a co worker who did options, then has his surgery this past Feb, he GAINED weight through the program, he did the "eat everything before I can't eat it anymore". His surgeon actually told him, you know what, I can not supposed to do it, but I will anyways. Def. not saying to go his way cus who knows. But our class was freaking out over the "required" 10% weight loss. By that I am supposed to loose 31 lbs, I have changed habits of eating and what not, and have lost 15, so its still going to show them the commitment.

I went through the Options program in Fontana last year. They do tell you its "preferred" and they don't want you to gain weight but you definitely want to see it as mandatory. There are so many people having this done that they want people who are willing to work for it. You also want to lose that weight so your liver will shrink so it will be easier to operate. The most important thing you want to do is start to learn to eat properly and exercise. They didn't set the appointment for my psych evaluation until I called them and told them I lost my 10%. I hope this helps.

Thanks!! I'm down -5lbs. I've been walking a lot and watching what I eat. Thanks again for the advice I will be getting so healthier sweets in the house. :)

During our classes they have told us it is preferred and ultimately up to the surgeon... But this is a life change and i started my life change now and am aiming for the 10%... In northern CA where my sister had it done it is MANDATORY......but really the 10% isnt that bad if you are truely serious about the life change which is why the choice of getting the surgery was made in the first place..... I think its best even if you lose just a little so you are showing you are serious about the change for life :)

Yes our instructor makes it seem like its mandatory but I know its not. But I don't want any thing to hold me back or delay my surgery.

wow September 14 is just around the corner!! 15lbs is great! I'm only down 5 so far!

Wow yes I get why they want the 10% loss it makes sense to me. Thank you for the info. I'm trying to lean that healthy is the best way to eat! ;)

There were some in my group that did not make the 10% and still had surgery, but most were encouraged to lose at least 5% during the 12 week program and the final 5% before surgery - working in conjunction with the surgeons office. I made my 10% by the surgeon's appointment, then he told me not to gain anything before surgery or it may be cancelled. I lost another few pounds just to be on the safe side.

I just completed Options in Fontana last Thursday, August 16. I am a slightly different situation because I had my lap-band removed on July 19 by Dr. Fedorka (one of the Kaiser Fontana surgeons) but the way I took it, they suggest that you don't gain but if you don't lose all that weight no big deal but they will urge you to continue to work on losing. And from my understanding from others who went through Fontana as well... when you have your consultation with the surgeon, he will either tell you need to do a specific pre-op diet of a specific amount of time (1 week, two weeks, etc) and/or he will schedule surgery but tell you that you need to lose a specific amount of weight by surgery or he will have to reschedule surgery.

That being said, the day of my tenth class, I got a call to schedule my bariatrician and mental health appointments. The bariatrician was scheduled for a week later and mental health was scheduled for Sept. 17. And from what we were hearing it would be reasonable for us to expect to have surgery before the end of the year or early next year.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
