Tastes Are Off

Is this normal? Nothing I've tried really tastes good. I'm 2 weeks out and got released to soft foods Wednesday. I've tried chicken salad, pinto beans, yogurt... Nothing tastes good. I'm actually dreading eating now. The only thing I've had that I like is applesauce but it has 0 protein.

Applesauce was the first thing I liked too! Mine were off the first week, but I was released to full liquids/mushies from day three. My normal tastes already seem to be coming back. I couldn't stand canned soups, so I had to make my own. I think it will get better.

Are you taking vitamin supplements? I know when I have too much of the vitamin B family everything smells and tastes like burnt oranges.

Yes I'm taking my vitamins... It's not an orange taste... It's more of a bitter/ick taste... Nothing tastes good... This is very frustrating... I'm just seriously dreading eating at this point and I'm only a few days in...

My tastes were way off for a couple weeks. I was so excited to get to the pureed stage to have more flavor and texture only to be dissapointed and discouraged that nothing was good to me! I made homemade applesauce with Splenda to sweeten and enjoyed that. Part of me thinks just the fact that the food has been pureed takes something away mentally because I tried having fish with a little sauce that I mushed with my fork and chewed well and I really enjoyed it. Once I got to soft foods, it was better. In the meantime, I got my protein from shakes (another thing that I liked pre-op, but was suddenly awful for a couple weeks, but I now like again) and just kept trying to eat a little every day. Hang in there, it gets better!

I'm almost 4 weeks out and there's NOTHING I want... Eating is a chore and that's very odd!!! I would get some unflavored protein and add it to the apple sauce. Atleast then ur getting some in! Good luck!

I struggled with this too. I was not a big fan of the pureed food stage. The whole idea of pureed food sounds kinda icky to me anyway. The only thing I had that I really enjoyed a lot was chili with ground turkey. I made a chicken salad that wasn't too bad too. I stuck with a lot of cottage cheese and yogurt with flavored protein powder. My tastes seem to have come back a little now that I'm on soft foods, but there's still a lot that seems unappealing.
