Why is there a green number on my profile, and on others' profiles? Some are high, some are low, and there's a rating underneath... "neutral," "good," "excellent."

I've tried to figure out, and find out, what this means but no joy.

They are "reputation points. " the number tells you how many times people have hit the "like " button on your posts. On the main home page down on the right you'll see the top 5 "reputation point leaders" (blush).
