My husband and I have our sleeve surgeries scheduled on September 7 with Dr. Umbach with Blossom Bariatrics in Henderson, NV. He does not have his sleevers stay overnight in a hospital, but in a hotel close by. Is this safe? Is anyone familiar with him?

I'm not familiar with your doctor, but that seems a bit odd. Personally, I'd feel a lot better with an overnight stay in a hospital.

That is odd since you are traveling for your surgery. My surgery is outpatient but of course I am local.

I have heard of that, and usually they will come and visit at the hotel. Dr. Thomas Borland in New Iberia, Louisiana does the same thing. They send you with nausea and pain medication, and do several follow ups before you go home!

I think getting in and out of a regular bed at first would suck, but I had some complications. I stayed 5 nights in the hospital though. I also had a hernia repair and other things though.

I spent the night at the clinic where I had the surgery. It would make me nervous to have no overnight care. IV pain meds, for example. Maybe I didn't really need them, but it sure was nice to have them that first night.

Okay - stop the worrying. Many surgeons are moving to no overnight stay. This is NORMAL.

So I'm almost two years out and had VSG as an outpatient too. My surgeon has done this for years. No drain, no morphine, no staples, no cathedar, no nurses waking you up at night and no pain. Yes, I had someone spend the first night at home with me. I slept right through the night and most of the next day. Only took my liquid pain meds once during that first week and that was to sleep since I messed up my sleeping patterns - sleeping in the day and up at night.

Just make sure you have an emergency phone number to call and since you are out of town know where he would meet you (what hospital) and have a map from hotel to hospital.

You are okay but I would not have both of you having surgery at the same time.

Mine is going to be out patient as well. I like that, bc I hate hospitals. And it's only going to be ten grand, not forty. And it's being done at a center of excellence. My parents are both doctors, and apparently it's far more common to have it done out patient. I'd say just find a surgeon who you feel comfortable with, that's all that matter! Either way they do it, in patient or out, cheers to great safe results!

I just had my procedure last Thursday and I was so thankful to be in the hospital overnight because I had a reaction to the anesthesia and throwing up or I should say major dry heaves. They had to give me and injection to stop it. Ask your doctor what you do in case that happens. Also not sure what I would have done without my hubby after the surgery. Good luck with having them at the same time.

Getting out of a hospital bed was no picnic believe me,it was worse than getting out of my own bed

I had my surgery with Dr. Hanna in Las Vegas. I didn't stay overnight.

Had mine in March w/ Dr. Atkinson in Las Vegas and I was very happy to stay the night in the hospital. I don't think I would have done so well at home with kids being there. It was nice to have at least 24 hours to recuperate in peace!!

I did not stay overnight, just out patient surgery, and did fine. But I did need quite a bit of help at home the first few days getting up and down, and such! Hospitals can be dangerous places, and of you can safely stay out of them, all the better!
