What Would Happen If I Cheated?

Not to say I am... but if I were to eat one or two tortilla chips 5 days out from surgery what would happen? Or a bite of chicken? Granted it is a very small amout and I chew it to liquid stage and it is only maybe once a day? I mean besides my stomach stretching and me being a bad, bad girl?

  • <edit> I love this site, but so many people make statements that sound like medical facts, when it's simply their own ideas and views, so be careful on here. I have found MANY of the "medical"

  • I would stick with your Drs orders... Your stomach hasn't healed and you could potentially injure your new tool, regardless of how little the bite or how well you chew. At 1 week out I wasn't eating

Your NUT is not your surgeon. Please confirm with your Doc your staples are NOT inside your stomach......I agree with other poster. Maybe you can watch the surgery on youtube to get an idea how it is performed.

Well they are in the lining which includes the inside of your stomach. So I will agree to disagree and leave it at that. I am telling you what they said and I believe them.

Though the staples are placed on the outside of the stomach they are still have some surface area on the inside. As to the the stomach acid dissolving them' date=' this is why they are titanium. If the only concern was sterility, the could be made much less expensively out of surgical stainlesss steel. And as far as the sutures go, they do dissolve & get broken down by the body. They are put in place as a redundancy to ensure there is no leakage.

Now as to the reason we are placed on liquid diets after surgery. That is primarily because our stomachs are numb & swollen for a period of time and we can more easily harm ourselves by unwittingly overeating our capacity. Not to mention that our capacity for food is so small at that point, the only real way to get any volume at all is through liquids.

The primary concern with the staple line is small hard items like seeds, popcorn husks, & such. These should be avoided for the first 6 weeks as they can lodge in the staple line & yes, there are documented cases of these irritants having to be removed manually.[/quote']

Not say you are wrong at all but my dr said mine do not dissolve they have tissue growth around them but the staples don't go anywhere.

You'll probably get a leak in your sleeve, have an infection and have to go back to the hospital. Not something worth a couple of tortilla chips.

I had a smart A reply but I refrained. Just be lucky you dont have a halloween type of surgeon doing sleeves with yarn and paper clips
