Hey everyone my surgery is scheduled for next wed 2/29. I've been reading a lot of post about newbies having a lot of nausea. I have a ton of prescription meds. To include ondansetron & promethazine to control nausea n one also controls vomiting. Zegerid to control acid. I have some pain meds and other stuff for my stomach to heal. Anyway just wondering if anyone else had access to these meds or similar ones and did they help???

I'm on Pantoprazole for acid reduction and it helps a TON! I didn't have that "hungry" feeling that most have, the one that means you need an acid reducer. My pulmonologist decided to put me on the acid reducer anyway at about 3 months out and it has made a huge difference in how I feel and in what foods I can eat! I still can't do super spicy stuff like jalapenos, but I am able to eat salsa and other mildly spicy foods again. I couldn't even do regular black pepper before!

Yes, the acid/nausea meds do help! You may have to experiment a bit with which works best for you.

I take the generic form of Pepcid each day and have only had to use my anti-nausea meds once. I used pain medicine off and on the first week after surgery, but then I no longer needed it.

Thanks Lissa. I actually start the acid meds the night before surgery. I was just curious. So many people struggling with nausea and I just spent a ton on prescriptions. I was hoping they worked a little, lol. Thanks again for answering. Can't wait to get this over with if my nerves don't kill me. Ugh so excited but super nervous. These next couple of days are going to be something.

I didn't have much nausea at all. I did have to start Prilosec postop, but now I'm not even on that. I left the hospital with no prescription meds at all and was just fine--no pain meds, nothing. I didn't even take Tylenol. Let me add that I don't have a particularly high tolerance for pain; I think I was just one of the fortunate ones, although there are many, who didn't have a lot of postop pain.

I missed the part about pain! Sorry! I didn't take any pain meds after the first night. I have a pretty high pain tolerance, but lots of people don't have much pain. Make absolutely certain you have something to measure the liquid pain meds in the right format (metric or english)! I wanted a dose of my pain meds the second night before bed but didn't have the correct measuring spoon and was too far out of it to safely figure the conversion from mL to tablespoons.

I'm on 20mg of Prilosec in the morning and bedtime. On top of that I take Sucralfate 4x daily and it has pretty much preserved my sanity. It's a miracle medicine!

I left the hospital with pain med, generic pepcid, zofran for nausea, and hycosamine (Levsin). I took the pain med for a couple days after surgery and then at bedtime for a few more days, but then nothing. It wasn't really painful, except when I went to sleep. I might also add that before surgery I was taking a comprable pain medication 2-3 times a day for rheumatoid arthritis pain since I had to stop all of those meds a few months before surgery. Since surgery I have had to take ZERO for that (YAY!!). As for the other meds- I took hycosamine a few times a day for the first 1-2 weeks (it helps with bloating and spasms) the zofran only a few times and the pepcid I started, but stopped because I felt like it got stuck and I am not really having any heartburn type pain anyways. Hope that helps!! Good luck! It is good to have the meds on hand, because it does seem like you are in a bit of a fog from anesthesia the first few days and better to have the meds there than trying to get them if you need them!

What's the Sucralfate for?

I have that med also but under another name Carafate. My doctor states it's like a coating for the tummy. My coworker recently had surgery and states that it helps a lot.

I came home with Reglan for nausea & Prevacid for heartburn. Just got off the Prevacid. Dr only keeps you on it for about 90 days! So, one less pill in the morning! Never needed the Reglan. I also had liquid Tylenol # 3 for pain. I used Tylenol #3 pills before surgery for knee pain. Never really needed it after I came home. Knees only have occasional pain... now that I have dropped 64 lbs! Good luck. I feel this has been the best decision I have ever made for myself!

On my last hospital stay it was found during an endoscopy that I had SEVERE erosion in my new sleeve. The Sucralfate basically turns to paste when it hits stomach acid and adheres to the lining of the stomach to promote healing. It has made SUCH a difference in just a few days.
