When do u not have to worry getting a leak anymore? How long until your stomach is healed completely?

My surgeon said they are very rare after 4 weeks. Not that they couldn't happen - just really unlikely at that point. The most frequent time according to him is within the first 48 hours.

What about months and even a year out?

I doubt it. Your stomach heals. The cases I have heard of leaks late (after a month or so), there were subtle symptoms of a leak all along that were ignored or misdiagnosed.

I am five 1/2 months out and I think my new stomach has the same chance of a leak as my old one did, which is to say slim to none.

My surgeon said that smokers continue to be at risk for leaks. Other than that you shouldn't really worry about them after the first few weeks.

Just asked this at 2 wk post op today. Doc said 2 to 3 wk mark.

My dr. said after 3-4 weeks your staple line is healed and you will not be at risk any longer.
