I have been taking Yaz B.C. pills to regulate my periods, reduce breakouts, cramps, and PMS. My husband has had a vas so I am not worried about getting preggers.

My doctor told me the pill will not work at all after surgery and just mess up my hormones further so no point in taking it. It also puts me at a higher risk for blood clots. He wanted me to stop taking it right then so I will be fine for surgery. I noted I was in middle of a pack and he said stop anyway. Ok fine.

What should I expect? I have never stopped in middle of a pack. I feel ok but I am afraid I am going to get a suddent rush of blood or something crazy. I searched the web and didn't find much.

Anyone stopped mid pack before?

Which doctor told you they will "not work at all" after surgery? I've never heard of such a thing. Lots of people with WLS continue on the pill with no issues.

I am curious about that as well. The only thing I have been able to find is related to gastric bypass patients. They say due to malabsorption issues, birth control pills may be less effective and an additional method should be used for the first eighteen months following surgery. But, we don't have malabsorption with the sleeve.

Plus "less effective" is very different from "won't work at all." :001_tongue:

It was my surgeon that told me. He stated my stomach will have a different emptying time now and the pill must remain a certain length of time in the stomach to be effective.

To be honest I think he is more worried about blood clots. I had already been warned by my primary doctor that my time on the pill was limited due to age and hypertension.

Like I said I am not worried about a baby showing up just stopping in middle of a pack. I wrote this post this morning when I felt fine. Now I feel like my period is coming on. Ugh. I just had one two weeks ago.

Yeah, stopping in the middle will give you your period. But some surgeons make you stop before a surgery because of blood clots, so they are used to it, I guess. :001_tongue:

I would talk to a Gyn about long term use. I think most of the absorption of medicine happens in the intestines, not the stomach and our stomach emptying time shouldn't be that different -- though this depends on how you do the operation and the shape and size of the sleeve so it's going to vary from surgeon to surgeon too.

I was told to stop by BC pills before surgery however, was not told I had to stay off of them afterwards -- my doc has me on them more or less for HRT and because I have really bad Pre-menstrual headaches (Bearded is 'fixed') ... I stopped mid pack and thought I would have a period, but I didn't - I don't take the placebo - I just take 3 weeks, and then start another package - so I never have a period ... I started back on them when I got home after my surgery and they seem to be just as effective.

Ok I had a total emotional meltdown this morning with my husband. I yelled at him and slammed doors which I NEVER do. He just stood there looking at me because he had a feeling it was going off the pills so sudenly that was causing my sudden change in mood. Of course him looking at me made me even more mad. Poor guy.

I feel like I am having a dry run of a period. Cramps, low back hurts, neck hurts, major headache. This sucks.

Advice to those who come after me. Ask early on if they want you to stop your birth control pills and plan to stop at the end of a pack.

:001_tongue: Watch out for me today. And that doctor better watch out too if he knows what is good for him today. After surgery I am going to campaign to go back on them.

Sorry if below is TMI:

Let's recap for any reading later

After stopping Yaz Birth Control pills mid pack because my surgeon told me I had to be off for 30 days before surgery:

24 hours: Felt fine. This will be no problem I am thinking.

48 hours: Massive headache bordering on a migrane. Only had 1 in my life.

56 hours: Feeling like a bad period coming on. All the worse symptoms that I get a few days before my period.

72 hours: All heck breaks loose: Headache, food cravings, backache, neck hurts, cramps, tired, very grouchy, crying, sudden depression, wishing I could have a cig (quit a year ago).

78 hours: Started flow, heavy and worse cramps I have had in years. Sick to my stomach, tired.

Moral of the story. Plan, plan, plan. If you are taking the pill right now talk with your surgeon about a time frame to stop so you don't have to stop in middle of a pack.

Ohhhhhhhh I am so sorry to hear you're having to go through this mess. I stopped mid-pack years ago, and went through the same thing. I was on Yaz as well, I thought I had transformed to something non-human.

I hope you start feeling better soon.

Transformed into something non-human is the perfect word for it.

I had another meltdown this weekend. My husband just looked at me again which makes me even more mad at the moment. He stood there telling me he loved me while I ran around like an idiot and threw a temper tantrum over frozen yogurt.

Needless to say I broke a nail in my fit, there was melted frozen yogurt on all over one wall of my kitchen (from where I threw it, even this fish tank got some in it), I broke a cermaic spoon rest from throwing the top of the garbage can on the counter, I broke the top of the garbage can outside, and the front door does not close properly now :clap2:

I am so lucky to married to a wonderful man who duitfully hellped me clean up my mess while I sat quivering in tears.

Never again will I stop mid pack. Oh did I mention I am bleeding like a stuck pig?

OH SoCal - I am SO VERY SORRY you're having to go through this -- have you called your doctor to let him know you're having these issues? Maybe you might want to go to his office so he can see for himself? How horrible that you're experiencing this!

I am starting to feel better today. I think the worst is over. I hope everyone that reads this knows to to plan better than I did due to lack of info.

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
