Ugh!!! Terrible Appointment Today!!

Recommended Posts

Okay! So I went to my nutrition eval and psych eval today in Nashville. The dietician discredited me the minute I walked in the door!!!! She watery rude asked "have you ever been at a normal weight?" mind you I can take it on the chin like a man....but if I was at a normal weight before do you think I would be talking to her!?!? Jeez! AND I told her my mom had bypass and I shouldn't have. She said your mom should be doing this she should be doing this....whilst teaching me. I am not here to talk about my mom lady this is me! She led me out of her office and pointed to the elevators. Didn't not say goodbye hope your surgery sucks kiss my ass....NOTHING! This really upset me. And my psych eval lady plus the dietician were trying to talk me out of the band? Saying I should do the sleeve. Not a very good day....had to vent :) lol

Wow, it must really suck to be such a miserable person like your dietician! When I come across rude or dismissive people, I try to think of how bad it would feel to wake up every day and either hate my life or hate my job.

Good job for holding your head high, but it's hard when you're expecting good solid advice and what you get is a complete let down.

I would recommend finding a new dietician you can work with. Even though you may have only seen her to get clearance for surgery, you'll need someone on your side to learn how to eat properly post-op. I made friends with my dietician, she has saved me (via email) a few times!

Did either of the professionals you saw today give you a reason for why they thought you should consider the sleeve vs the band? I know for certain eating issues, the sleeve will work better than the band because the band won't stop a heavy consumer of sweets from eating them.

I have also heard of people blindly recommending the sleeve because they are not very familiar with the band. Just make sure that the reason they were recommending the sleeve was legitimate (or not). It would be something to mull over if their advice had merit.

Most of the medical professionals that I spoke with prior to surgery recommended that I have the gastric bypass over the lap band surgery. They said that most people who had the lap band surgery are not successfull. It seemed that I was always defending my choice to have the lap band over another WLS. I had done my research and I knew that I didn't want anything as drastic as the gastric bypass, I also knew that I did not want to be off from work 6-8 weeks. Most importantly I knew that the success of what ever surgery that I decided upon it would all depend on me and how committed that I was in losing weight.

choice to have the lap band surgery

My surgeon plainly said that he preferred the sleeve over any other surgery. After asking my reasons I wanted the Lap Band he said that he thought I could be very successful with the band. I almost felt like at first I had to defend myself! Honestly though, I use his skepticism as a motivator. I want to prove to him, at each appointment, that I can and I WILL be successful with the band.

My dietician also wanted to know why I wanted the band not the sleeve I must say I am having all kinds of thoughts running through my head mainly wondering if I'm making the right choice

I took her with a grain of salt really.....IMHO I think she was going through the motions of the insurance process....that might be all she does? Who knows? But they both mentioned the success rate of the band. That if you aren't compliant it will not work. But the band is a tool not a solution. I do not want the Protein deficit like the bypass, and I do not want to change my anatomy. I know I will have to work at any WLS but I think the band will be best for me.

Oh my gosh, run, run!!! Please check out Baptist Metabolic Surgery Center!! They are wonderful! Dr. Morton gave me all the info on the different bariatric surgeries and let me choose which one I was comfortable with. The on-staff dietician was wonderful as was the psychiatrist that they recommend (same building, but not associated with). Plus Dr. Morton has ten years experience with bariatric surgery as opposed to two years that I read on your surgeons profile! My first office visit was in November, surgery in January, I've had four fills, I'm in the green zone, and honestly don't have one single complaint about their office... and I'm a picky person!!!

I just couldn't imagine going through something this major without a surgeon and staff that I have complete confidence in and I'm comfortable with. They are amazing. I lost insurance shortly after being banded and they have been wonderful and very accommodating with me. I genuinely feel like they are much more concerned with me and my success than with the money they are making off me!!

As stated, it is a tool! I've been banded since 5/10, first fill 6/7....down 14 pounds....walking, swimming and feeling great. Hang in there and see someone else!

Taking a detailed history of the patient (which would include asking if/when you had been at a normal weight, and also a family history) is an important part of the assessment the dietitian was supposed to do. The only way to obtain that information is by asking the questions. I'm not saying she did not act in an inappropriate manner, only that the patient history is the foundation for the assessment.

I agree that which type of WLS one opts for is a very personal choice. They all require developing healthier eating habits and changing your relationship with food.

Sorry about your appt that sounds terrible. My surgeon was trying to talk me I to the sleeve too. If they think you need to lose anything close to 100lbs then they suggest the sleeve dines its quicker weight lose and alot of problems with the band is you have to work out and some people don't believe you will work hard enough. Think about them both but do what feels right to you.

The bariatrician I had at my very first appointment was the rudest woman I've ever met in my life. She basically told me I would fail because I was 22, said I "already thought I knew everything", and that I would need to "prove myself" to her. The ironic thing is... she was FAT!!! LOL. Do your research, weigh the options, and don't let that person's comments get to you.

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
