My surgery is on April 18th (pre-op is the 17th) and I started off great with the pre-op diet but totally blew it this weekend. My 90 year old grandma has been staying with us since Thursday. She began fretting when she saw I wasn't eating. I didn't want to tell her because she wouldn't understand and I didn't want to worry her. I could drink my morning shake without incident because I could do it before she got up. I would put a bowl in the sink to make her think I had already eaten. (Ridiculous I know! ) lunch and dinner were not so easy. I tried to make the best choices that were available to me but honestly, my last 3 meals were horrible! She has now gone home and I feel so incredibly mad at myself and guilty for giving in. So stupid!!

Has anyone else done this? What happened? Will they want to re-schedule my surgery? I am afraid my doctor will be so disappointed in me for failing that he will not want to do the surgery at all. I've got 3 days till surgery and I will eat perfectly-I hope it is enough

Its understandable that this can happen given your circumstances, but isnt caring about others too much what put the weight on in the first place ? you have to become quite self centered when u have a band otherwise it just wont work. Having the band means looking out for you first making decisions about what is right for you. Unless you ate pure fat and carbs while grandma was with you you should be ok, the pre-op diet is about shrinking the liver, some people have managed to cheat a little and it not affect things, but if u are really concerned u need to speak to the doctor, or just keep quiet and fingers crossed :)

Next time tho remember its you and your food decisions before anyone else :) however old they are !

Around 3 weeks before my pre-op appointment, I was notified by the surgeon's office of my confirmed surgery date. At the same time, I was informed of the weight I needed to be under by the date of my pre-op appointment. Literally, my entire family had just returned from a cruise, and I went into panic mode. I had 3 weeks to lose 6 pounds!

I was told that if I weighed at or over my assigned goal weight at the pre-op appointment, my surgery would be rescheduled. No exceptions made. Needless to say, I made it happen, and weighed in at 8 pounds under my goal on the day of the appointment. My husband even asked me if I could loose 14 pounds in 3 weeks, did I really believe I needed to have the surgery. Well, short term I can manage just about anything, however when I got my band, I still needed to loose 80 pounds.

I had no confidence that I would be able to loose that much weight and at my age be able to keep it off.

You had some extenuating circumstances to cope with...but the reality is that in order to be successful with weight loss, it needs to become "Priority 1". That means that you place your diet at the top of the list, and become more self centered about compliance with your diet. Others may not understand, but that is their issue to manage, not yours!

Good luck!

I know you are both right. Thankfully, I haven't had any issues with sticking to my diet around any other family members. The thing I couldn't get out of my head is that this could be the last time I see her (she lives 8 hours away and hasn't been well) and I don't want her to spend the rest of her time on this earth worried about ANYTHING. I also tend to stress eat so it was not a good combination. My granny has never been overweight but has had lots of heart issues (open heart surgeries, stents etc) with her first heart attack at the age of 45...very scary and a huge motivating factor to get healthy.

My doc did not give me a certain amount of weight to lose but my personal goal was 10lbs-I have lost 5 so far and will probably lose a total of 8 before the surgery.

No more excuses. From now on I will be my top priority!

What's done is done. I will say you CAN NOT, REPEAT NOT CHEAT POST OP. No excuses, no reasons. NONE. You can do yourself serious damage eating solids before you are supposed to. For now I would do the preop diet with a vengenence. Possibly eat less than you are allowed.

Everyone makes a mistake but just to admit it is a big step. During the process we are going to hit rough times but luckily we can support one another. You'll be okay, you can do it :)

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
