I'm 3 weeks post op and I want to have a beer...now I know your not supposed to have soda because of the carbonation and I haven't but I want to have a beer, is it allowed? And no I'm not a drunk! I went to my doctor on Wednesday but I was too embarrassed to ask him. :scared:

I know, I know - me, too! A beer would be wonderful! It's my understanding that you aren't supposed to have carbonated beverages. I've stayed away from beer & diet coke based on this understanding....

Hopefully we'll see some posts that tell us otherwise! I could so use a nice cold beer! I've switched to scotch or wine when I do have a drink... just not quite the same when you go to a bar and play pool or something though!

I have three or four beers a week. I rarely finish one, though. Keep in mind that I typically drink dark beers (amber and brown ales) which are less carbonated than pilsners.

One thing I do know- do not drink beer while you are eating. Although I miss this because I used to pair beer with food just like wine, it is painful to have carbonation while eating. I tried twice and both times it hurt like hell.

I drink beer. Like Ben's mum, I don't usually finish it. I find that draft beer is much easier to drink than out of a bottle.

I drink them slowly and also never drink beer with or just after eating - OUCH!

Being 3 weeks out, since you don't have a fill, you might not have much problem yet.

Just take it slowly, and if anything starts to feel uncomfortable, stop.

If you can get away with having a beer, why on earth do I have to have my Dr. Pepper confiscated? Carbonation is carbonation in any form. Any chance I can take a few sips of it once in awhile. I'm going to have withdrawal if they take that and my root beer away from me. I have a friend who had gastric bypass and she lives on soda pops. Why is the band so different? Wouldn't it be OK if it wasn't excessive? Really would love to hear if anyone ever has a soda pop.

Your right, the foam on the beer is caused by carbonation and what is the differnce between beer and soda? The doctors don't want you to have carbonation because it can stretch your stomach pouch. I'm still not that comfortable with having a beer. How long has it been since you've gotten your surgery? Like I said it's only been 3 weeks and I do not want to stretch my pouch. But I plan on having a beer within the next week.

Has anyone tried soda within the first few weeks of getting the band?

I would only assume because it has much more carbonation, it is only a guess! :scared:

Well, many people find the carbonation in soda PAINFUL, not just painful. I would think that would be reason enough to not have it. (food should not be painful)

Some people can drink soda and beer just fine without any pain, others cannot tollerate it at all.

Dody, not all doctors agree on the carbonation arguement.

My Dr doesnt believe in the carbonation thing. He told me diet drinks in moderation. I am not saying he is right because there just isnt any proof either way. I mean my Dr has this weird talk he gives me every visit about chicken. He goes on and on about changing to organic foods and do I know what they pump into chickens and I eat it etc. I know its true but whoa I dont need to know. I wouldnt be able to afford to feed my whole family that "special" chicken...and its what I eat the most of to get my protein. So maybe follow your own Drs orders and give or take a little either way on the small things. Its only MY opinion that a few sips of beer every now and then cant hurt. *covers head from the backlash* I couldnt live without my glass of sprite zero every now and then.:heh:

I drink Beer and diet Pop and my doc knows it-His answer is limit it and don't eat when you are drinking!

Based on Friday night's activities I can honestly say that I am still able to drink beer. More than one for sure and it still tastes great. I do enjoy beer just not as often and in as much quantity as before.

I am taking Cheri's advice and getting rid of the Peanut Butter but if she tells me to stop drinking beer I am going to cover my ears and sing LALALALALA! until she stops
