I have a Thyroid condition and my doctor will allow me to get the surgery, however, she is requiring that I take beta blockers a week before and after the surgery to be safe. Can I do this???

You may want to buy a pill cutter at your pharmacy... they are around $5... I am not much of a pill taker but recently needed to take a round of pills for an ailment and I found cutting them in 3rds worked out just fine.

Why Not? I take pills everyday of all sizes after being banded. I have a pill crusher but I never needed it.

I also take a Beta blocker and it is very small.

Have not had any trouble with my giant vitamins from the beginning.

The rule with a lapband is nothing bigger than an aspirin. Anything larger should be cut, crushed or in liquid form.

I have not had any trouble with pills even from the very beginning. I take a thyroid supplement every day too, along with all kinds of vitamins (although I take them at different times of the day).

Same here. I take several pills every day and have yet to have trouble with any of them. I have one giant one that I break in half, but don't even know if I really need to do it. One of my capsules is very large and there hasn't been a bit of trouble with it, either.

I do the same thing Rosie. I take my vitamins at different times of day too. Just to not overload the pouch. I need to get breakfast in there!

I take thyroid meds too. I crush my pill, even though it is tiny, and sprinkle it on some jello. I could probably swallow that tiny pill, but better safe than sorry.

If the pill is scored you can just put it on a flat surface and push down on both sides. But don't EVER Crush or split a time released pill this can lead to your body processing it all at once and with some medications could cause illness and death it's best to check with your pharmacist who will know more about the actual medication than your doctor will

I was told no while not eating solids. They told me to crush them.

Check with your pharmacist to see if the pills can be cut or crushed. Some pills can't be crushed or cut due to enteric coating or time release. Check with your Dr. to see if they can change your order to a liquid or alternative route method for a little while or permanently.

FYI: pills can taste bitter when crushed.

I am pre-op, and I take so many pills daily--7 for blood pressure, one for cholesterol, one for thyroid, etc., etc. My nutritionist said anything bigger than an asprin would need to be cut, and anything I take in a capsule I would need to get in a different form.

I asked my surgeon about it last week, and he said that he has never had a patient that had any problems taking even very large pills after banding! He has been doing this for many years, and has done literally thousands, so I guess I will believe him--at least for now! LOL!

Thanks everyone for all your responses. I just needed clarification since my endocrinologist was unsure. She has given me the green light to have the surgery. I am finished with my 6 month supervised diet at the end of this month and then they will submit everything to the insurance. I am crossing my fingers to get approved the first time!

I ended up taking some big pills while I was in the Hospital for another matter. They got stuck ! I had to go down state to my Bariatric clinic, and they took 1/2 of my fill out do to swelling.

So yeah ! you can get stuck.
