Port rediculously close to surface....odd?

Recommended Posts

Ok, so this is my first question here... I've been lurking for a little while. I drilled my doctors brain about everything pre-op...but I've come across a couple of obstacles lately within the last few days of surgery swelling going down.... that have me slightly concerned. (Yes, I plan on bringing this up to my surgeon/Clinic come Wednesday , first check up)

My port.. (assuming so...on my right side.) small hard lump , directly under the skin.... I think because the swelling from surgery from the band went down... That I can now feel this?

Q: Is it ALWAYS this close to the surface? does it usually go down? ...Fear of it coming out any closer to the surface. Kind of paranoid. Very tender in that location... Anyone have this concern or issue after surgery?

its only been about 2 weeks.

( Again, just looking for any others who may share this experience, not looking to replace doctors...lol)

Also I wanted to add.. directly under the staples/incision...its caving in... soggy little dip in my fat tummy. Normal?

I guess different surgeons have different preferences. My surgen put it just above my belly button and upside down! But I'm thinking as I lose weight it will be hidden by the belly button (I hope)

My port is usually flush with the surface of my stomach, but once in a while it looks like

I'm smuggling golf balls. No idea why, but I'll find out Tuesday.

Mine is really close to the surface too. The needle they use for the fills are not that long.

I think the port needs to be close to the surface so they can find and fill it easily. Don't worry, it won't grow "out" or anything, but as you lose weight it'll probably become more noticeable.

That's true. I can see mine through the skin since I've lost weight.

Mine is on the left side about 2 in. Above my belly button at an angle not directly above but to the left I can feel it very good but not really see it and I'm almost 2 months out

Hey we have the same surgeon!

I'm 11 or so days out...I have no idea where the port is other than where i feel the most extreme pain on theleft hand side of my stomach.

My surgeon always places the port just to the right of midline, just below the ribcage. I was a bit surprised at how close to the surface it was, but it makes sense to be accesible for fills. I too, wonder how evident it will be once I lose weight, cuz my upper half isn't nearly as large as my lower half. Just have to see how the clothing fits as I lose the weight. I'm down 25 pounds, had surgery Aug 18th, have 60 more to lose.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
