I have a premade Protein Shake as a prework out snack (I have a long time between lunch and dinner). Other than that my doctor does'nt really want me having shakes as they pass right through to the big stomach and don't keep you full for long.

I use MUSCLE MILK LIGHT: Cookies n Creme, chocolate Milk, Chocolate Peanut Butter, strawberry Milkshake, vanilla Creme.

These I always keep in the house in case I want a change. (DO NOT BUY THERE CHOCOLATE ! IT'S LOUSEY).

These are all available on ebay, just shop around.

That's for a White Jug full.

I have been using shakeology. I order it from the internet. Havent got my band yet, but I drink one in the morning with skim milk and it keeps me good for about 4 hours. So if it is good now I bet it is just fine after surgery. Get on the beachbody, shakeology sight and check it out. It seems a bit expensive at first but it is a 30day supply and is actually cheaper in the long run that buying Breakfast every morning.

I start every weekday with a shake. I've never been a breakfast person & I am not going to get up any earlier than I have to just to eat. A shake fits into my schedule very well since I can drink it while I'm primping in the a.m. Starts my day with a lot of Protein & I don't snack mid-morning.

everyone has their own preferences when it comes to Protein shakes. You've got to try some before you find something that *you* like. The best I thing I did was go to Vitalady.com. This site sells single servings of all the Protein powders they offer. The single servings run about $1-$1.50 each. I ordered a bunch of different ones - liked some, hated most but this approach was a lot more cost-effective than buying a huge jar and then finding out I hated the taste.

Vitalady also lists a bunch of shake recipes & ideas. Personally, I found the lower calorie ones (125 ca//serving) needed a little something to improve the taste...so I add 1c. soy milk or frozen berries. I really like the taste of the higher calorie ones (200 cal/serving) & they didn't require any additional enhancers - just some ice & a Magic Bullet.

cheers,

chloe

There are quite a few Protein powder threads on this forum. Check out the food and Nutrition section and also some of the older pages in this section.

I use Optimum Nutrition 100% whey Gold Standard. It has 24 grams of protein, 130 calories, and 4 grams of carbs. Both body-builders and people taking protein powders for weight-loss speak well of ON 100% whey on various forums. I have the "Mocha Cappuchino" flavour and it tastes like chocolate milk if you use it with milk. This flavour is one of the most popular flavours of ON powders. The other top flavours are "Double Rich Chocolate" and "Delicious strawberry." Many people also like "Tropical Punch." I'd suggest that you stay away from "Cookies and Cream" though; while some people absolutely love it, most people say it's horrible. When I need to keep my calories low, I use half a cup of milk, half a cup of Water and ice, and 1.5 scoops of the Protein Powder to make it thicker and stronger in flavour. Otherwise, I just use one cup of milk and 1 scoop. It doesn't taste bad with Water only, but I'm particular about taste. It mixes well with just a spoon (I never have to bother with a shaker or blender) and it's pretty much my snack at times. I've tried other whey protein powders before and while they all weren't bad, they had a bit of a weird after-taste. Some people don't care about taste though.

The good thing about whey isolate is that it digests quickly, which means that it's used by your body sooner, it's a good after-workout shake, and it causes less bloating. Also, whey isolate has an excellent amino acid composition. For ON 100% Whey, the ingredients list is simple and it doesn't come with a lot of the unnecessary filler that some other powders contain. A 5 lb container costs about 80 dollars and a 10 lb container costs 130 dollars. It may be expensive, but you don't want to go cheap on your protein powder unless it's still a good one. Hopefully, someone can point you to a similarly healthy and tasty protein powder at a lower cost or maybe you can look out for this brand when it's on sale. Good luck!

EDIT: One of the reasons that ON is more expensive than others is because it is made of 100% whey isolate. If you would like a cheaper whey powder, look for whey concentrate/blend. They aren't usually as high quality as whey isolate and they digest slower, but they also have the benefit of being thicker and keeping you full longer. I also just read that you can find 10lb ON on ebay for $70 instead of $130!

I am in NO way an expert about Protein Shakes but the Protein powder that i have used is Wonder Slim. I first did the powder from my doctors office but the taste made me want to gage. There is a metabolic weight loss doctor in my area that uses a similar product to wonder slim that is her own protein but the people that I know that went to her were VERY successful and say that the facts and taste is the same. I get mine from dietdirect.com they are 10.99 for 7 packets. they have 15 grams of protein, 24 Vitamins and Minerals, 100 Calories, 1.5 grams of fat, 7 grams of carbs, trans fat free and saturated fat free. I have tried all of the flavors and chocolate and cocomint are my favorites.

For the summer I like nectar brand. You can get samples online so you can check out all the flavors. You mix them with Water and they are like a kool-aid type drink. I like the roadside lemonaid flavor.

I started buying Protein Shakes from Market America for their Transitions Diet here is the link for the shakes. http://www.marketame...tion_shakes.htm There really good and don't have that power chalky texture and they fit into the low glycymic with the high Protein for the pre-op and post-op requirements. If you order please put in the shonnee22@yahoo.com refered you. I actually will order both the chocolate and vanilla and mix them together. For 14 servings it is 29.95 which isn't bad at all. This shake when mixed with Skim Milk has 26g of protein.

I've been banded a year and a half and still drink my Protein shakes. My pre-op diet was VERY strick 4 weeks 100% total liquids (and 2 weeks post liquids) so a total of SIX weeks to liquids so I was trying every Protein drink/shake I could so I wouldn't get bored or burned out on them. One of our grocery stores (Meijers) sells several different brands of pre-made Protein drinks so I bought one of each flavor in every brand that was within my calorie limit and there was one that I really liked because it had 51 grams of protein in each can. It's called RTD51, I liked the creamy vanilla and the Peanut Butter cup. I also buy flavored egg white powder and make shakes with that. I've tired many of the protein powders and I like the 100% EAS whey powder. I will cut up a banana, 8 oz of skim milk, 1 scoop of Protein Powder and a tablespoon (or so) of Peanut Butter and ice and make my morning Protein shake.

Everyone's taste are different so you just need to try each one and see what you like the best for you! Do you have a calorie limit or protein limit you need to stay with?

It's been 10 long years! Here is my VSG weight loss surgiversary update..

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
