My doc requiers a 3 week pre op and 3 week post op liquid diet. He wants me to use Optishakes/meals. I am supposed to have 5 shakes a day equals about 800 calories.

My quesiton is:

I found out the opti meals are 100 a week. I really cant afford that. I did find a huge jug of whey Protein at Walmart $16.88.

1 scoop is 140 calories,24 grams of protein.

If I do 5 shakes of these a day its still 700 calories and 120 grams of proteine.

Can I just use the Whey protein instead of the Opti Meals??

Or am I stuck!!! thanks everyone.

Try Muscle milk light. $25 per week. Sam's, BJ's, Cosco carry them by the case and they taste yummy.:cursing:

I am Dr. Kim's patient as well. I went with the cheaper Bariatric Advantage that he offers for 55 a week......TALK ABOUT GROSS. Don't let them convince you to buy the alternative brand. My friends who have tried Optifast said they are good. I have no suggestions on other options but I can definitely tell you to not buy Bariatric Advantage.

I'm a Dr Kimmer here too.

$100 a week is worth it. Optifast is downright delicious. I did it for 4 weeks straight and loved it.

PS. Don't forget that you have a week or two of "liquids only" post surgery.

Thanks everyone. I start the liquid diet June 8th and Surgery June 29th.

I really like Dr.Kim and I will ask him my options. My thing is if I can get the same results for cheaper then that is the way I will go. Atkins shakes are really good and the whey Protein is really good. So, If I like those and they will give me the same results..... Then I dont want to spend ooohhh about 400 more than I have too.

Dr.Kim patients. I am worried about day of surgery. Do you Have to walk your self into surgery. Or are you in the pre op holding area and they put you to sleep there. I really really dont want to have to walk myself. Been there, done that, freaked out!:w00t::cool::cursing:

Let me know what your day was like.

Don't worry about the surgery. They put you in a pre-op room where you get undressed and put a johnny on; they start an IV and you lay back and watch television. Before you know it, they are waking you up in the post-op room telling you to sit up and eat a cup of crushed ice with a spoon.

You will probably never even remember seeing the operating room.

So I'm on day 3 on my 11 day liquid diet with Dr. Kim. DON'T GET BARIATRIC ADVANTAGE! Spend the money for Optifast. It is worth it. I have BA and it's HORRIBLE:cursing:. I threw up the first few the first day. A friend who is having surgery June 10 with Kim, mine is June 8, let me have one of the Optifast Soups.....TASTES LIKE HEAVEN:wub:! The Soups are creamy and taste like cream of chicken. They also have Tomato as well. Just bite the bullet and get the expensive stuff. Make your family eat before you and you go for a walk. That helped me. Or now, my BF eats with his back to me. (we eat on the couch, no room for a table) I think it's funny but it actually helped!!! :-) Good luck and lets be band buddies!!!! :cursing:

I am in North Fort Worth (Keller) and have a few strawberry Optifasts packets here. I'm willing to give you one to try tomorrow if you are close.

Unfortunately they don't have samples at Dr Kim's office or nobody would ever buy the BA crap. :cursing:

Has anyone tried the nectar brand, it's just like Isopure but has a sweet taste. I mix it with Water and it eas great. Found it at Vitamin Shoppee and it was cheaper than the Isopure powder.< /p>

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
