Good Morning all;

As I have posted previously, I want to keep my band to myself. No one's business but mine. I work in an office, but will not tell them. Naturally if I come to work too soon, and exhibit pain or discomfort that will bring on questions. I am trying to figure out some senarios wherein I can dissappear for a week or so and not be questioned.

In this connection I am thinking about a 5 night cruise out of NYC. I enjoy cruising and would have medical attention available. could walk the deck for the walking part, could recline on a deck chair as I hear this is comfortable. Many Plus's. Only negative would be the dining - or lack there of.

I think I could get a 5 night cruise for around $250 each. That would be one of those "Last minute Deals", so maybe I would not find something. But "Last minute" really means 3 to 4 weeks before you leave, so if I got one I could build my story around that, or if I miss a deal I could simply say I am taking a week off.

Any thoughts from experienced banders about my cruise deception idea?

Are you thinking about getting your surgery on one day and hopping on a cruise the next?

I'd suggest waiting at least 4 days after your surgery to hop on a cruise. I bet others would suggest waiting longer. The problem is, you don't know how you'll feel until after the surgery. I needed to talk to my doctor on day 4 after for a nausea problem (and a ship doctor is NOT a bariatric surgeon and may not know specifically how to help if there is a problem.)

It would also suck to pay all that money for a cruise and then have SEASICKNESS on top of your potentially-already-queasy-stomach. Maybe you've never had seasickness before, but I bet that this surgery could increase the chances of it significantly.

So, I guess my recommendation is that if you *do* purchase a cruise, that you also buy insurance so that if you don't feel well enough to go you don't lose your money.

Maybe tell them you're going to visit relatives instead? :cursing:

I agree - I would never have felt well enough to go on a cruise. It is a lot to adjust to when you get home. Why do you have to give your co-workers an excuse at all. So you want a little time off - no big deal. If you have to tell them some excuse, tell them you have to have a hernia repair. That way you can rest at home.

I just told people at my work that I had a Hernia repair..that way if I am having pain related to my incisions or something I can play it off as pain from the Hernia repair...So far nobody has said anything....

Its cheaper than a cruiser; but not quite as fun... :biggrin:

As someone who also loves cruising, and has been on 3 cruises since my surgery in June, take a little bit of time to get used to your band before you go.

Also, while there are deals, you are not going to get a deal like your thinking of out of NYC. Lowest prices right now for a 5 night starts at $319 plus taxes per person, for an inside room in September. Sorry the travel agent in me had to check.

The last thing I had on my mind was a cruise. Sea sickness and people stuffing themselves all around you when you are on liquids. Not fun. Also, if there is a complication, the ship's physician really is not qualified to handle it.

You could just take a week off and tell the office you cannot be contacted. They less they know, the better it is anyway.

I was 1 year post op when I went on my 1st cruise. I had no problems at all with my fills during that year. I saw my surgeon 3 weeks before the cruise and was still getting fills at that point but he would not fill before my cruise as he said that if any problem at all arose a ship doctor may not be able to deal with it appropriately. I had to agree with him. Even tho I had no history of complications you just never know so why risk it. I agree with the others... a hernia repair is a reasonable explaination and is anatomically relative... Good luck whatever you decide!

OMG I am 7 days out and you dont want to be on a cruise ship This was the hardest week of my life I cried over grilled chicken one night LOL Cruise ship not Plus I personaly had a patch and nausea medicine every 8 hours for 5 days.

Personally, the issues I had with diarrhea the first week post op would be enough to keep me off a cruise ship. Liquid in, liquid out!
