Ignore her. You should be very happy with your weight loss. 38 lbs is nothing to sneeze at. Keep up the good work. She is probably just jealous!

I feel for you and am preparing to be bombarded this afternoon myself. I am going to the doctors today for my 3 month appointment and am still at a weight loss standstill. I am sure my skinny nurses will have some kinds of comments for me. One thing I am greatfull about is that I did not tell anyone except my husband and parents so the stranger comments will never happen. Hang tight! You are doing VERY well! I just thought I'd post because I can soooo relate right now.

People who are not banded don't understand that our weight can stall without proper restriction. You are doing amazing and should write this off as, she's just ignorant. If she's a close friend talk to her and explain about the band. If she's not a close friend ignore the comment and know that you are doing everything in your power to lose the weight. Best wishes!!!

cutting you down only makes her feel better. Let it roll off your back, and soon you will whizz by her as you go down on the scale!

Tell your girl at work she can kiss my @$$. We were banded a week apart and I have lost 37 lbs as well. Thats 37 hard won pounds that are not coming back and I am proud of each and every one of them.

Isn't it weird how other people are threatened by our weight loss?

I think the thing we have to keep in mind is that most people view getting this band as 'taking the easy way out' because they are under the impression that the band does all the work. Given that impression, they probably don't 'get it' why we don't start losing the weight from the day of surgery.

Heck, even some of the people on this forum who had the surgery don't 'get it' that the band is just a piece of plastic. Until you get fills and restriction, that's all it will be.

I was Im'ing with one of my aunts this morning and she asked how much I'd lost so far. I told her that since my seminar (6 weeks before my 11/3 surgery) I've lost 45 pounds. She's been on WW (for the 4th time in 10 years) and said, "I've only lost 35 pounds in the same time, but I did it the hard way".

I just laughed and told her that if that misconception made her feel good about her weight loss 'suffering' then more power to her. I don't let the ignorant or malicious get to me.

I really feel your pain. I went to see my Primary Care Dr. today and he asked if I'm cheating... as he expected that I would have lost more weight. I wanted to punch him. My surgeon gave me another fill 2 weeks ago and No, I'm not cheating. I do everything by the book. The surgeon suggested that I walk 30 minutes a day in addition to my current excercise schedule (swimming Tues & Thurs also, cardio and weights on Sunday) to boost the weight loss. I've lost 41 pounds and 3 pants sizes (currently in a size 14) from my previous size 18-20.

No, the scale isn't moving as much lately but I see a real difference in my clothing. There isn't a week that goes by that I'm not tightning my belt or hemming my slacks - they seem to get longer and longer as my hips, stomach and behind shrink.

Hang in there. We are all doing GREAT!

Obviously she is bitter--as she quits smoking, she will know her own struggle!

I understand how someone's thoughtless words can throw you into a tailspin, so please don't think I'm being critical with my response.

But do try to put this in perspective: You've lost a HUGE amount of weight in 3 months.

Her idiotic comment really doesn't do anything to take away from that amazing accomplishment, does it?

A good response might have been? "Pain? What pain? This has been the easiest 38 pounds I've ever lost!"

I mean, sure--we all know it's hard work. But b!tch at work doesn't need to know that.

You're doing phenomenally well---really, PHENOMENALLY. Don't let a clueless coworker throw you off track. She's totally not worth your angst.

You have done a great job. Some people just don't get it.

I have a person who always says that I am fat. (We see them in the winter) She is hugh!!! So this year when I saw her she didn't say anything about my weight loss, she said WOW you have big feet. I wear a size 6 she wears a 10. WTH is with these people.

Keep your chin up. Although I am ready to punch this person.

You are doing a great job.

Hi Whillow,

38 POUNDS is GREAT!!! You are doing amazing, try not to let your friend or anyone else hurt your feelings or discourage you at all. Sometimes it is ignorance on their part. They think because your had surgery the weight will just melt off!! I wish!! They don't understand the hard work this takes. KEEP YOUR CHIN UP and just smile!

Hugs,

G'ma

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
