Hi everyone...just wondering when I will be able to ride horses again after having my lapband done on Friday?

Hey! I have horses too. I have not been told when I could start riding again. The only thing my doctor said is to wait 6 weeks, and that's when I can start lifting more and basically when I can resume anything. So I am waiting until I am 6 weeks post op until I pull my big butt onto my horse. lol But I don't ride just for pleasure, I ride with a trainer to show. I am constantly trotting,cantering or racking, unless I am giving my horse a breather for a minute or done with my ride. I know I dread when I ride again because I will be soooooo sore!! lol But it's so worth it.

I was riding 3 weeks after surgery. I climbed up a fence to mount and dismount in order to avoid stressing my abdomen. I also took it pretty easy in the saddle. My doc basically told me not to do anything that hurt, and trotting HURT! It took about 2 months before all the discomfort was gone.

Thank you all for your replies...TN girl..what kind of horses do you show? I show saddlebreds! I guess you can relate to the fact that horse show season is right around the corner and I want to be ready!

hi I ride too - dressage. I was posting trot at about 4 weeks after surgery- maybe even 3 weeks I got on as soon as I felt I could get on w/o pain (and I use a mounting block). I started off very slow - like 10 mins of posting trot and built that up if I had no pain during or the next day by 5 mins. It did take about 1- 2 months before I wasn't having any discomfort also. I think it took 4-6 weeks of riding before I cantered but my memory is pretty bad. I did a little sitting trot (like once around the arena at about 6 weeks out from surgery as that uses abs) - I started w/ once around the arena and increased that too... once that was okay then I cantered. Now I am back to my old self.. sitting trot, no stirrups, cantering, dressage movements etc... I ride w/ a trainer too.

in fact now that I am 52 lbs thinner I am rewarding myself by going to Germany to horse shop! my mare has been off since August... and I've been riding my trainers horse. Will see what is out there.

Oh, that is so helpful to know! I don't know much about dressage but I LOVE watching it. I live in KY and we are getting ready for the 2012 Equestrian Games in Lexington. They have been busy building new arenas, barns, etc. It's going to be amazing.

I ride with a trainer too. Saddlebreds are pretty high strung..well, I"m sure you know because I think they are used sometimes in dressage too...so I have to be ready to roll once I"m on. I was hoping to not be off that much time, but I'll let my body decide if it's too soon. I'm a little bummed that you said it was uncomfortable for awhile to ride...are you talking about your incision area or where the port is?j

By the way, congrats on your weight loss and equally exciting is shopping for a new horse...HAVE FUN with that!! :wink:

Small world, huh?? :confused: I ride with Hill View Stables/ Steve & Suzanne Crabtree in Kentucky! I've shown since I was a kid, but took the last two years because my daughter, SHelby had moved up to equitation and you know how expensive it can all be. However, this year I've leased a country pleasure horse from the barn...Heirrelevant and I'm so excited to get back in the saddle!! What do you show in??

Funny I have been contemplating leasing a saddlebred. I used to own a horse started out Western and was riding English by the time I had to sell Dante. I have never ridden a Saddlebred before. Any advice?

Lisa...I used to own and show WC Phi's Phortune Teller. I have a gaited show pleasure horse that I am trying to sell because I am starting my own business, Admiral Lee Memories. I will be back in the show ring sooner or later though!!!! And I just retired my beloved road pony, Lamborghini back at Chattanooga-Chairty. So he's living a happy life in the pasture. I do believe I have seen your horse, and I love him!!! Or her...lol

Minxz...nothing in this world beats getting on a Saddlebred! They are amazing!!! I will never own another breed of a show horse (except my Hackney Ponies lol). Saddlebreds can be high strung. But to me..when my trainer has me ride a new horse that is maybe green or really high strung, I love it! It's such a rush! And Saddlebreds sure do look so pretty in the western and all the bling! lol

lbndoc, I can understand the trotting hurting. I do not ride horses, but I have before. BUT, my family and I went to Universal Studios at Thanksgiving and we went on one of the simulated rides where you sit in a "ride car" that just moves around while you watch a movie. The Jimmy Neutron interactive movie ride had a part where the cart bounced up and down and it hurt my band for 2 days afterward and I was 16 months post op at that time!!!! I will NEVER ride that thing again. :thumbup:

I think it was the port area as it is attached to abs (can't really remember). i didn't even get on until I could get on w/ little discomfort (ie diaphragm). Another thing is that it took a long while to get my strength back. My left leg is still way weaker. the weight loss also makes u lose muscle no matter how much your Protein intake is. granted I haven't been weight training - but that is what I should be doing. A lot of work w/o stirrups went a long way to fix that and with dressage we do a lot of lateral movements so I focused on a lot of that too... to get that left leg going. By the last two weeks of the year I rode 9 days out of 14 and wasn't sore at all anymore. Now I'm back to only weekend (due to work).

TN girl...Seriously?? you showed Lamborgini? I definitely know that pony! What a cutie to say the least! I've heard of the name of your other horse too. :thumbup: It's funny you're trying to sell your gaited pleasure horse when that's exactly what i really WANT to show. I showed a gaited pony as a kid and of course was hooked. Nothing like racking, huh? :thumbup:

Looks like you just had your surgery a few weeks ago. Are you adjusting to it? We also look like we're pretty close in what we have to lose too. Do you go to any of the KY shows? Our first is Lexington Spring Premiere and then we go to the spring Alabama show. I'd love to meet up with you and say hi at one of the shows. :scared2: I'm keeping my lapband kind of hush hush with people outside my immediate family and friends...so some of my barn friends won't even know. To me, it's just a personal decision. I'm so glad to have "met" you on here!

Minxz....lease a SADDLEBRED and show! To me, they are the most elegant, graceful horses and I can't imagine being involved with anything else. Don't get me wrong, I think ALL horses are beautiful, it's just that saddlebreds are in my blood and truly are my passion. Keep us posted if you decide to give one a try!

Nice to see others riding here, I ride too, I used to show jumpers....I have an Irish Draught and a Fjord pony. Hoping to event the Irish guy this year!

Lisa...Yes, I own Lamborghini. I LOVE him!! He's a handful, but such a sweet boy. I was so sad to retire him, but he's 19 years old, and he definitely deserves it!! I probably won't be going to many shows this year :thumbup: But I live in the town that Chattanooga-Cleveland Charity show is in, so I will definitely be there!! I'm hoping to maybe catch drive some of the ponies at the barn this year. I'm at the same barn as the pony Seamair's Simply Awesome, so there are some nice ponies at the barn, and I'm dying to show one! haha Racking is amazing! As soon as Janet had me ride a gaited horse years ago, I was hooked. lol Whenever I get to get another horse, I'm either going to get a gaited horse or I really really wanted a walk trot horse!

I'm adjusting pretty well after the surgery. I haven't rode yet, but I'm so busy with school and work that I haven't had time. I still have some random pain and sensation around the port area. And I go for my first fill today..YAY!! I'm starving! haha I hope to actually meet you one day!! The first show for us is always Pro-Am in Perry, GA.
