  1. I need recommendations for the best tasting protein powders and drinks. I do not like the taste of artificial sweeteners, but recognize I'll have to get used to those. I guess I want to hear from you, because there aren't good sample sized packages to try out new stuff. It's usually a $35 or more investment, and if I hate something, that's a lot of money to waste. Everyone is recommending Fairlife, and they're fine. They don't make me gag or anything, but they're not my favorite. I've never had a protein powder or protein drink that I liked. What do you think? If there isn't something just off the shelf, what types of recipes have you used? Does unflavored protein powder really have no flavor? What do you mix it with to make it palatable? Thank you!
  2. Here we go, currently 35 F. Since I was 21 I have seen an endocrinologist for what seemed like an unknown hormone disorder. They didn't diagnosis with anything but monitored me for years. I had severe cystic acne, Hidrianitus suppurativa hirsutism and I struggled with my weight (always). My weight was not that much of a problem at the time (I was 160, 5'7) but I felt like I was heavier than I should be for what I ate. I was not diagnosed with PCOS because I had regular periods and normal test results. But the doctor told me he wanted to continue to see me. Years later in 2022 my weight skyrocketed to 230 pounds in about a 18 month period. It was shocking, never have I been that heavy. It was awful. I didn't change me diet. The sent me to a nutritionist but I didn't lose weight. It was like weight-loss was impossible. The endocrinologist has no answers and I got a second opinion. Again no answers. Then in 2024 I was the same weight but my asthma was becoming incredibly severe. My lung function was down to 70 present and I was frequently hospitalized last year. They told me my weight was worsening my asthma. I told them I couldn't lose weight. I got desperate and from June to November I ate 400 calories a day and only drank water. I lost 30 pounds. I had no choice but to do this. It was crazy, it was dangerous and I passed out twice but I had no choice. I was dying anyway. By December I started upping my calories to 700 and by January I was eating 1200 calories. My lung function improved to 86 percent and my asthma was suddenly improving based on test results. The troubling thing recently is in the last two months I've regained 11 pounds. I'm only eating what my nutritionist recommends. I'm now at the point of wondering if Gastric Bypass is for me. I clearly can not lose weight easily on my own, worsening obesity makes me sicker. The weigh comes back far too quickly. Would this be the right decision for me?
  3. I found this recipe in complete bariatric cookbook and meal plan. Thank goodness because I can’t do those sweet shakes no mo. Green Machine Protein Shake. It’s lightly tart and tangy. I taste the green apple essence and it’s creamy. Yum!
  4. How beneficial are Protein and Multivitamins to losing weight? I’m not doing either at the moment and I’m noticing that I’m not losing any weight
  5. About to buy some so need advice on ones with less taste change and most protein for less scoops! I know y'all will know the answers to these questions! Best group EVER!!! Thank you!!
  6. How can I intake more protein and more calories without eating a huge amount of food throughout the day, all day long? It's almost impossible for me to get in 3 meals a day, and small snacking all day isn't possible either. So what are some ways I can get in extra protein without heavy shakes/smoothies? Or some meals/snacks that have a lot of protein and/or calories in them, but aren't a huge amount of food (if that makes sense)! Thanks for the help in advance!
  7. I am having a hard time finding protein without whey or soy in them. I'm also allergic to nuts so that makes it even harder. My surgery is set for March 10th of this year. So I'm worried I'm not going to be able to find enough food or liquid protein to have after surgery. Because almost everybody only carries whey products. Has anybody else ran into this problem.
  8. I am researching Naked Whey protein powder, Nutricost or Quest? I need a good protein powder for my post run midday meal. I usually eat my lunch but there are times where my lunch is a little bit too heavy.
  9. I had surgery on 12/2. I started my preop diet on 11/15. The entirety of the last 6 weeks has been nothing but just protein powder. Premixed protein drinks. Clear protein. I am to the point where I can actually no longer stomach any amount of protein drink. They have started making me nauseated. And a lot of it is that I have to take my time with them and I can't just down them quickly like I used to. So far I have tried: -All of the fairlifes. These used to be my absolute fav. So far, the regular nutrition plan 30g protein chocolate ones are the best, but hard for me to find, especially in bulk. The strawberry/strawberry banana ones and vanilla ones are way too sweet. -A lot of premier protein flavors are gross to me. They were gross before surgery and are extra gross now. Same with MuscleMilk brand. -I have unflavored Isopure that I put into a lot of things, and this is fine as long as someone else makes whatever I am drinking and doesn't tell me that they put protein powder in it. It's like I can immediately tell, which tells me this is mostly mental. -Dutch chocolate isopure powder. Okay, but still protein powder-ish. -Isopure clear drinks. So far these have been my favorites, but it's a lot of liquid for me to take in, 3x a day, especially when I'd just prefer plain ice water. -H2Protein: sometimes these are too sweet, sometimes they are okay. I just ordered some of the protein shots in hopes that maybe the 3oz size will make it easier to get my protein goals, which have been severely suffering these last two weeks. Any advice?
  10. Hello! My surgery was September 9th, 2024, and I am still currently drinking one protein shake per day (Fairlife - 30 grams). I am wondering when I should give this up? It's not like I can't stand the drink, I actually like it still after all this time surprisingly. It's just that they are so darn expensive and kind of a pain in the rear to get (my mom orders from Sam's for me to save some $). I feel it's become a part of my normal daily routine but when did everyone else give them up?? It's been almost 5 months now.
  11. I'm currently debating proteins with my husband. LOL He's sold on bone broth protein powder, but I keep reading about whey isolate. Which is better for bariatric patients??

For bonus points add in a scoop of protein powder Thin mashed potatoes. Add bone broth gravy for protein and moisture. Mashed sweet potato Fauxtato style cauliflower puree
  13. Hi guys, I wondered if any of you have decided to completely given up conventional food and have protein / meal replacement shakes instead post op. I have heard that this is absolutely fine to do as long as you are taking your supplements and drinking plenty of water. What's your thoughts/experiences?

How to intake more protein and cals

Cottage cheese 1 c is 30 (mix with with a savory protein powder for more), tofu is 1.5 cups for 30g, Greek yogurt is very different per brand but around 1.5c and will easily take on protein powder for flavor. Salmon and tuna are about 1/2 c per 25 but adding protein is harder. 5 eggs is 30. So for low volume boost… cottage cheese or Greek yogurt with the highest protein with a powdered protein mix in would likely be best. Using Seeq or another water flavoring protein powder is also great. Just remember don’t cook or dump your powder into hot stuff or it’ll separate and get grainy. Hall a cup Greek yogurt with a protein powder scoop is 40g of protein and is kinda awesome 20g per 1/4 cup for those with tiny tummies. Like a small planned snack or meal to bump you into the .8-1.2 g/kg of protein many shoot for with diet or lifting to save their own bodies’ protein from getting chewed on. I find only 60g or protein is needed to reduce/suppress my hunger though. Caution with using protein powder with cooking… it can separate as it heats and 2 often the fake sugars it’s packaged with are not allowed to be heated as they change to not so great chemicals. I need to look up which. I forget. But there are protein peanut butter bars, tofu pies etc if you want alternative solids. Pinterest has a bunch

    January 2025 Surgery Buddies!

hi my paperwork says from week 3-4 purree and week 5-6 soft foods then onto normal food. I am also am missing savory food..
  16. Just had my second follow up with my Dr. (who I'm not very impressed with anymore) and would like some help figuring out how to get all my protein needs in. I am supposed to get 80g a day but only eat 3 times a day 5 hours apart, no snacks, and I can only physically eat 4oz at a time Not allowed cheese or protein shakes, I don't really like yogurt. No added carbs that aren't already in food ( which isn't that big of a problem). I am also supposed to be adding vegetables in but don't see how I can eat vegetables and get my protein. I just requested a meeting with a dietician and hope they can help. Just a little discouraged after my appointment and needed to vent.

  18. What is the best shake flavor that you guys seem to have came across and works the best for you? there's so many kinds, and flavors, brands and everything in between. I reallllly like AdvoCare Chocolate. Pre op/ Post op I just want to keep my options open and if we can keep it online shoppable that would be lovely.
  19. If it works with what you've been given for a diet plan, the unflavored whey powder (like Isopure) blends well into tomato soup or butternut bisque. I found that to be a delightful alternative to the sweet shakes. You might also buy Fairlife skim milk, which has 13g protein per 8oz serving, and blend with PB2 peanut butter powder (and a banana if allowed) for a really nice smoothie. Lastly, a few brands of the bariatric protein shakes make chicken, beef, or French onion flavored powders that you can heat up for a savory "shake".

    Having second thoughts

There’s no rush. Maybe a Sadi might be a better option? Take your time.
  21. Something else I do is bring tuna or salmon handi-packs to lunch with a plastic fork and eat that right out of the package, and a piece of fruit. There are so many options of those handi-packages too. I have also done the 3 compartment lunch boxes with a protein, a fruit and a veggie to give me variety, you can stuff those boxes in your lunch box and have them always available for you in the refrigerator. Those boxes were a life saver for me, I just do my meal prep during the weekends or when I am off. Have a great day.

    January 2025 Surgery Buddies!

when you say eggs, beans, white fish etc, are you having them in puree form ? I am given paperwork that says until 2 months post op , its puree only , no solids. Is your paperwork the same? I miss sausage rolls, and no I do know that they are made in hell, but I miss savory.

NobiX - Minimally Invasive Alternative to Gastric Bypass

I get the caution after your Lap Band experience. If this new device works in trials, it could be a good less-invasive option. Worth watching how it performs long-term.

    Any 50yo or older?

I’m 58 and had RNY on 12/20/24. I’ve lost 57 lbs. total and 26 since the surgery. I’m a picky eater and I’m struggling to get the protein and fluid requirements in. Currently in the stage 4 post-op diet and it is not easy. Hoping stage 5 will give me a few more food options.
