Has anyone kept it a secret?
OutsideMatchInside replied to VSG4Mag's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have lost 180 pounds. No one asks if I had surgery. Last summer I was walking 5 to 10 miles a day my friends are on fitbit with me, they saw that. I eat literally all day. I eat every 2 hours but I don't eat carbs. People see that too. Steaks, pork chops and other proteins. I will sit and pick all the croutons out a salad, people see that. If you actually living an active lifestyle and eating healthy no one questions what you are doing. In spite of what people think, the weight doesn't just drop off in a month. I lost 10 to 12 pounds most months, a steady decline but nothing insane. Most women lose at that pace after WLS. 98% of the population thinks diet, exercise and will power is enough to lose weight, if they see you actually practicing these they don't even consider surgery. WLS is still a pretty rare thing and an outside idea to most people. 90% of the people saying tell, are always men. Spend one week as a woman dealing with other women and get back to me on people being supportive. Also I don't know why new people think we don't eat a lot of food. Most WLS patients that are successful eat often. People are not seeing that you are eating 4 ounces at a time. They are seeing that you eat every 2 to 3 hours which is insane to most people. Also the amount of time you only eat very little is like 3 months max. Get real. Besides forums, IRL, I avoid giving people any weight loss or fitness advice. This isn't my life. I don't want to be the weight loss go to person. First of all most people aren't serious and it is a waste of time. All you have to do is say I eat Keto or I don't eat carbs and they lose interest. I have lost weight before low carbing and so have other people. Most people don't want to give up carbs to lose weight. They just want to eat whatever in moderation. I give back to the universe by posting on forums. Although honestly it is pretty pointless because the pre-ops and people less than 6 months from surgery think they know everything. -
Long term consequences?
Creekimp13 replied to CyclicalLoser's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Cyclical, I think you're smart to check out as much research as possible. I do think you're jumping to a lot of conclusions, however. Vomiting isn't necessarily something you'll ever do after surgery. I haven't vomited even once. Haven't experienced any nausea. Have overeaten a couple of times and felt things back up a little. Did a little walking and deep breathing and the sensation went away within a half an hour...and taught me to avoid overeating. While people do typically hit ketosis during the liquid diet phase....you're only talking a couple weeks. You do not have to follow a ketogenic diet post surgery. I sure don't. Some folks do, and do great with it. But there are plenty of surgeons who will work with people who don't want to go the keto route. My diet is similar to Mayo Clinic Diet. Calcium malabsoption could cause dental issues....but again, that's very manageable with monitoring and taking vitamins. My labs at 3 months were all perfect. Good vitamin levels. Perfect sugar. Obviously, results are going to vary and yes, there are risks. But remaining obese is not without serious risk, either. Risk-vs-Benefit...in my opinion....strongly favors having bariatric surgery. -
June 2019 Surgery Siblings!
starladustangel replied to BulletWithButterflyWings's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No pre op liquid diet but I have been tracking calories and making better choices over the last 3 months and the surgeon was happy with the 10 pounds I've managed to lose since my last visit. I'm not since that's so little for 3 months although I really have only been getting stricter with myself for two months. Still not very much. I've done keto and atkins before so watching carbs and protein is something I am familiar with. I'm getting gradually used to having 1200 calories or less a day. I've signed the consent forms. I cleaned out two Grocery Outlet stores of Siggi's plain yogurt today. It was 2 for a dollar. 16 g of protein, 6 carbs, 4g of sugar and 90 calories. They are so creamy and delicious and provide a lot of protein. Usually they are 2.00 each at the other stores so I stocked up but it was maybe 8 or 9 in total. They mostly had the sugar filled flavored ones. -

Should I be “excited?”
BoredFatGirl replied to fiddlinjellybean's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am both nervous and excited. I have always been, at the very least, chubby. Like you, I have always settled for being 'less fat', rather than going for thin, or even in-shape. My weight has gone up and down (with a focus on going up) ever since I can remember and I never thought this surgery or being thin was something that would ever happen to 'me'. I have gotten used to being 'the fat friend', to having to wear certain things because of how I feel about my body, and having to even filter how I speak in public because of my insecurity. Learning how to mindfully eat and use food for fuel, rather than to fill a temporary emotional void, will, no doubt, be hard, but the mental struggle of getting that fat girl mentality out of my head once I actually achieve my goal is a whole other story, I imagine.. I've been on the keto diet myself (pre-op) and it has helped a lot with helping me focus on protein while being mindful of my fat and carb intake. Still, its not always easy. I am someone who loves to cook and am constantly looking up recipes, or seeing them pop up in my timeline on Facebook, and I can't tell you how many times I have thought about what I could make from the unhealthy choices real quick. I haven't though. And I honestly think its because of these forums. Use the tool your doctors have given you to lose the weight, and use these forums for the support you need to keep you going. Track everything! You got this! ♥ -

@serenity786 YAAAY!! I know the exact feeling when Dr. Hong took it out last year. It feel a heavy burden to relieve out and your mindset is now healing through trauma of symptoms we went through the bad. I remember after woking up from surgery asking the nurse if the band was out. LOL .. I am so happy to tell you i lost 40 lbs and i am still working on it. i will never ever take my weight loss for granted. I am on keto/ low carb diet and it had been working for me. Right now the post surgery will be painful for aleast a two week. My tip is to keep walking and then take couple hour to sit and lay in bed and keep rotating your body otherwise your back is gonna be hella sore. Speedy Recovery and now it time for you to enjoy and breathe in this healing journey ❤️ -
I'm a recovering keto bro. Whatever happens, on <600 cals a day you'll be in ketosis. Further on, after the first couple of months, I've made it my business to incorporate a little pasta, fruit etc. Why? Because the problem with keto is that it isn't forever. It can't be. And if you rely on being in the state of ketosis for health and weight loss you are doomed to fail. The reason I got this surgery is to be as normal as possible because it is only through normalcy that I can be successful long term.

🍽️ 🍽️ What's on the Menu? 🍽️ 🍽️

Okay so broke my fast with this wonderful soup. https://www.galonamission.com/slow-cooker-low-carb-zuppa-toscana-soup-keto-friendly/ For extra protein, we subbed beef bone broth instead of plain broth and I also added in an extra 1/2 scoop of the bone broth powder to pack in 22 gm protein in my 1 cup serving. I can do soups as long as I slurp the liquid, then wait a few minutes and eat the solids. There were no leftovers. -
Thanks for the response. I agree with most of your comments. Keto definitely is not for everyone. Although Keto does not require calorie counting, it also isn't a license to ear as much as you want as long as it's on the diet. I track my calories daily and stay at or below 1500 a day at this point. I will eventually go up closer to 2000, but this is working for now and I am only 14 weeks post-OP. I will sit down with my nutritionist in three months after I have my next round of bloodwork to see if I need to make any changes. I will say one thing that should apply to any health diet---stay away from commercial, processed foods and beverages. Don't eat anything that l, when you look at the ingredients, sounds like it was invented in a lab. Stay away from simple carbs and sugar. We don't need them. You can't go wrong with a whole foods diet, with or without keto. Sent from my SM-G965U1 using Tapatalk

Keto diet question
Calgalintx replied to angie_is_losing_it's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had my sleeve May 2013. I still have restriction, but have not been successful in losing all the weight I wanted to. I had the sleeve surgery in order to reduce the amount of insulin I was taking, and to be healthier, not thinner. At least, that's what I told myself. I did reduce insulin from U500 to U100, via pump, and my bp evened out. However, I am about to have bypass surgery, in order to get skinny and live healthier for the next 40 years! I realize nothing will change though, unless I change my habits for the better. My dear friend has been in every diet out there, but has had the most luck with Keto. She even just had all-over body plastic surgery to remove her excess skin. She says shes had the most energy in her life, and can think so much more clearly than ever before. For her, it's her new way of life. -
This is really for sleeves who are far enough out that are eating actual meals.... have you ever tried the keto diet? Good? Bad? Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app

typical keto is low carb and low protein with high fat and that is more outside the most common WLS diet. If you looked up a low carb diet it would match up better with most of the plans given by the different surgeons. It mostly about cutting out the sugar and refined carbs. These tend to be the trigger foods for most of us. Most obese people have damaged metabolisms and sugars and highly refined and process foods play to most damaged parts of our hormonal system. Don't fear the fat but to much of anything can work against you. always remember there are essential amino acids from protein and essential fatty acids from fat that you can not survive without But there is no essential Carb. They just make you feel like you cant live without them and that is the very sign that you need fewer of them. good luck

As Creek noted, official diets are all over the map, but most have the common element of a certain protein minimum (typically 60 or more, depending upon the patient's need - smaller women need less, taller men need more,) and minimizing sugars or otherwise simple carbohydrates. Relatively few programs promote a keto type diet - those are typically adopted by patients on their own - and there is little general need for such diets but if one is into them, it won't do much harm (at least in the short term.)

FluffyChix replied to Creekimp13's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@jess9395 I'm not 100% certain, but I vaguely remember I think she said somewhere that she came back to post a while so she can get her BP discount for protein muffins or something like that? IDK, though, my keto-addled brain might be making that up? (Good to see you btw!) -
June Sleevers Lets Get Excited!!!

Yes, Next week already, it feels like time passed in a flash, I booked the surgery two months ago. The smallest I can ever remember being was 135 in high school too! I was in dance and it kept me in shape, m weight has slowly crept up through the years and after having my kids i packed on 20lbs each kid that just wouldn't come off. I used to be super active and then i tore all the ligaments in my foot and here came more weight. Now i also struggle just to stay under 200, i've tried everything including keto and it just comes right back on, with a vengeance every time. I told my family that I don't want to hear there opinions when they think i look weird if i do hit my goal weight. I know its going to be different for me because i haven't seen myself that small ever, even when i was at that weight i thought i was fat... if i knew then what i know now lol. I'm so ready thought to not feel all this weight on my knees and my back. That has been the hardest, not being as active because my foot swells under the weight and stress. Hope we can follow each others progress and be each others motivation! -

I have a few questions so I might understand your predicament better.... So you had surgery on 6/12.... When did your Dr. have you go on the water only diet? From what date to to what date did you lose the 45lbs? Soooo I'm not a Dr. however I have had several stalls and my Dr. said they would be normal. He told me that my body would need time to adjust in between drops of weight. So ive lost 28 pounds since my surgery on 6/15. 17 of that weight came off the first month, After that i've averaged about 5lbs a month. Now i say averaged but in reality I have stalled for 2-3 weeks then had movement in the scale of a few lbs for 1-2 weeks. Then I will stall again for 2-3 weeks then the scale moves again. I definitely have noticed when i eat more protein rich foods and drink lots of water i get movement in my scale..... The problem is the reason I had the surgery to begin with I LOOOOOVEEE carbs!!! So while i try to have more good days with my eating I don't always stick to the protein first rule! My recommendation would be to not cut out eating.... I think that might make you stall more since when you reintroduce food your body is probably going to try and keep as much nutrients as it can. I have heard a lot of people have success with the intermittent fasting but i think you have to start with smaller hours so your body doesn't go into starvation mode and try and keep everything put in it. I know MrsLingo on here was staying low carb or keto and she had looks amazing. A lot of people in my Dr.'s group have also gone low carb and have had success with keeping the stalls short. I know stalls can be frustrating trust me i feel like I've been in stalls more then I've had movement on the scale. If you get a chance check out Ask Dr. A on Youtube. Dr. Alvarez was my doctor and watching his videos has helped me so much. He answers questions other VSGers send in and you would be surprised how many of us have the exact same issues. His videos give you so much information and they help put me at ease about some of the issues or stalls I hit. -

So today I’m upping my protein massively and I’m giving myself a 10 hour eating window 9:30am (80cal) 1/2 premier protein shake (bananas and cream) and in my morning coffee. 11:30am (210 cal) 1/2 cup cottage cheese, 8 ounces fairlife milk 3:30pm (278 cal) 1 cup of that Tuscan keto soup (no extra scoop bone broth powder) 7pm (268 cal) Italian sausage and 1 ounce kimchee. Over 75gm protein and a VERY high calorie day for me at >900 cal. I’m trying my best to switch things up because I’m working 22 hours in the next 2 days and will slip into sub 600 calorie days and a 18:6, followed by a 16:8 day. Exercise was a cardio 1.5 class followed by a flow 1.5 — each class was 50 mins -

Sick of lockdown/quarantine/shelter in place that's for sure. Been doing nothing but walking around neighborhood or riding bike, quick grocery store trips maybe once a week. Been home since March 13th, orders for California where I live are to continue this until May 3rd. 😭 Today is the 3rd anniversary of my mom's passing and I'm suppose to be with my sister. But no traveling, had to cancel my flights to see her. I physically can't eat more than about 3 1/2 ounces of food which is super helpful because I think I would totally be gaining weight if I could eat more. I've been doing "very well" with my hydration as I track like I'm on crack every ounce of fluid going into my body and usually hitting about 70 ounces. I was on a keto diet prior to doing WLS and have pretty much continued that but more protein then fat diet, but not very many veggies. How do people fit in veggies when protein is your main objective? The struggle is real. Also how to get in so much protein besides drinking it when we have to wait 15-20 minutes before and after eating to drink again and we need so much liquid. It's like there are not enough hours in the day. I know I'm crazy spiraling sorry. As for weight loss, gosh I feel like I should weigh less by now. I mean I exercise regularly and I eat/drink less than 800 calories a day and my active calories per day are anywhere from 800-1200. Total calories burned daily like 3000-4600. The math just doesn't seem to add up to me 🤷🏼♀️ I miss hugs 🤗 I am an extrovert and this being cooped up is killing me. -
I was doing Carnivore/Keto diet October through December last year. Lost some good weight. Used MCT Oil or Butter in my coffee to make it bulletproof or keto coffee. It was just a way to get more fat in my diet, which is useful in keto. The MCT oil sometimes gave me diarrhea.

It's not that long. My doc had me eating solids in 4 weeks. I still follow all my doctor's instructions, but I choose to eat keto foods and skip the carbs. That said, my macros are not really keto because I am 45 percent of my calories come from protein. That's way too high for keto. I am more of an extreme low carb diet if I want to get technical. I am not consuming enough calories for a true therapeutic keto diet nor can I do intermittent fasting. However, my blood glucose levels are very stable now. I am never over 120 even after eating. I am generally under 100. My BP is normal. If I ever see adverse effects on my health, I would change my diet. So far so good though! Sent from my SM-G965U1 using Tapatalk

I wanna know about carbs... Seriously!
Travelher replied to KindaFamiliar's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I belong to a facebook group run by a sleever who is a nutritional counselor. She recommends a balanced macro plan for losing weight. She suggests: 35% carbs, 25% fat and 40% Protein (just set up your macros that way in my fitnesspal). if you want to go deeper and look at sugar and Fiber the two should cancel each other out ideally. This is total carbs, not net. My own dietician says less than 100 grams of carbs is extreme low carb and wants me to up mine. I'm comfortable in the 30-35% range (which usually puts me around 70-75 grams. As I continue to be able to eat more I'll get more complex carbs in (probably mostly from vegetables, maybe fruit) so I will be in the 100 gram range, but still in the macro range she suggests. I have noticed that my memory and frankly, thinking has improved since upping my carbs to the 30-35% range. the facebook group is called recipes for weight loss success...of course it is a great source of bari friendly recipes. she's also doing a month of Keto recipes for those who follow keto. I was worried I'd gain or stall when i added back in more carbs (in the form of berries and oats) and I was wrong, did not stall or even slow down. Dr. Matthew Weiner has good youtube videos on post surgery diets and has also written a book. He is a big fan of vegetables and talks about the impact food has on resetting your internal thermostat (metabolism) and how some foods raise it and some lower it. He is a fan of legumes and vegetables as a primary dietary source, suggests limiting grains and dairy and some other of my faves (lol). but it all makes sense. I have greatly cut down on cheese since following the macro plan because it drives my fat macros up pretty quickly. other than 1/4 cup of oats with 1tbs chia seeds in the morning I have no grains in my diet. -
You can make your own pizza crust out of so many things these days that are low carb, like cauliflower/broccoli, almond meal, canned chicken (I found this one super interesting!) Look for Keto recipes on Pinterest. You'll be amazed by the things people come up with to replace those "bad" carbs.

Almost quit on Day 1 of my pre-op liquid diet
RickM replied to Yo-yo girl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It only takes a few hours for the stomach to be empty for surgery, which is why most surgeries, including GI procedures, have one stop eating after midnight or some such time, sometimes they may restrict one to clear liquids for a few hours before that, but otherwise it is similar to what one needs to do for an EGD. The shrinking the liver thing is something that is debated amongst the surgeons, as to how much improvement can actually be achieved with a week or two of dieting, but to the extent that it is therapeutic, it is the low carb/keto thing that has the beneficial effect; the liquid only diet that some programs impose is of questionable value in that regard as many programs don't impose any diet at all other than the standard day or night before thing. A couple surgeons I know specifically don't want their patients fasting for weeks ahead of time as they want them as strong and healthy as possible going into surgery - a lot of different philosophies and experiences out there that lead to these varying practices. There may be other reasons for the different pre-op protocols (other than, hopefully, "that's the way we've always done it") so it's best to follow your surgeon't plan even if it isn't fully explained -
Be careful with kibbeh, when its fried its very very unhealthy. I second the kibbeh nayyeh suggestion. It is the most delicious mazza in my opinion. For the grape leaves/dolma suggestion, pretty sure once you have no restrictions you can eat them. Also be aware, they are stuffed with rice. Might I make some middle eastern suggestions that are low carb?: 1. Shanklish, a goat cheese salad. 2. Muhammara, a red spicy paste with nuts 3. Tabouleh salad. Has bulghur but not essential to the dish and not enough to be high carb. 4. Grilled kafta. Can be high fat but 0 carb so if you are going keto it should be fine. 5. Hummus or foul without bread. Also be weary, you would be surprised how much fat there is in hummus from the seasame paste. Again, works for keto. 6. Grilled chicken with toum (garlic paste). 7. BBQ pro tip: grilled onions and grilled tomatoes. Very common in middle eastern bbqs and very delicious. Things that should be occasional because they are high carb and fat: fried kibbeh, shawerma, muajanat/manaeesh/middle eastern pizza although as an alternative to regular pizza they are relatively good. Thin crust and if you get the zaatar then you avoid the cheese, fried falafel, our rice dishes also have lots of oil, phyllo/cheese rolls (fried). Source: I am Jordanian.
