New Here *2 years out of VSG*

Its is terrible that this surgery is done without giving the patient adequate information, I am guessing the constipation is from lack of fibre in your diet. Currently I have a poop every 2-3 days or so as I am not eating that much, I guess that's the reason maybe that's why for you too when I add things like benefit it tends to make me have runny poops so I avoid it. if your schedule was working for you before I would stick to it as long as your blood work comes back good and you are getting your protein and water in its ok. Just because your family member never seen anyone have a schedule doesn't mean its not right .Most people who watch their weight eat to a schedule even if they haven't had surgery. I use my fitness pal to get an idea of how many calories how much protien etc i am getting each day it helps to give you an idea of what portion sizes should be too. Its very easy to use at first you might need to weigh stuff etc but it has loads of already pre added foods in there for example if i am making a snack i will search cruskits, sliced cheese, sliced tomato and find the right one and add it lots of stuff you just scan the bar code its so easy. its has options for 3 meals , snacks and water intake and breaks it down into calories, protein, carbs, fat etc. say if you eat something regularly you can save it too as a meal or snack so it makes it quicker to add it. The amount of calories you should be consuming varies on who you talk to and how much you want to loose per week. I sit around the 1200-1400 per day mark and I am loosing about half a kilo a week sometimes more as some days I might eat less some days a little more. Hope this helps
  2. Yeah I do have extra skin but it’s easy to hide under clothes. Maybe someday I will get the extra skin removed. i am still actually losing weight… I haven’t stabilized yet. My goal weight was 195 but I just kept losing. My intake that I can do seems to be more in line with the limited quantities of bypass patients rather than sleeve. But everyone is different, so who knows. i am told it is impossible to lose “too much” and that the weight loss will eventually Peter off and stop. I revised my goal weight down to 165 pounds which would put me at ten pounds more to go. the way my body seems to work is I stall for a long time, then drop a ton of weight quickly (ten pounds) …. Then stall again for a while… then drop more…. i have sensitive skin and the excess skin does cause rashes to occur. I get them under my breasts, in my midline area by my belly button and with the skin overhang in the pelvic region. They say that if you have documented skin conditions like I do then they will take care of the extra skin… but it’s recommended to wait a couple years. I think it also has to be overhanging by a certain amount. (I think I remember my pcp saying it has to hang lower than the pelvis bone)
  3. Yeah, I've been reading a lot of posts about the long waits during COVID. Hopefully since things are starting to get more stable, it won't take as long. Things have moved pretty fast so far for me. I just had a PCP visit on 2/1/22 and she put in the referral; the Metabolic clinic called me the next day! Not even a full year and you're down 155 lbs!! That's wonderful! If you don't mind me asking, do you have a lot of extra skin from the major weight loss? I'm 310 now and will be getting the sleeve. I worry about the extra skin and really don't want to have a bunch of surgeries. Thanks for sharing ❤️
  4. Ran my first 5K on Saturday, and while it took almost an hour, I actually ran the whole way. It was amazing. When I started getting tired, I just remembered when I first started and how I died just running a minute, but now I ran for 55 minutes! Also... came out of the shower this morning, and realized I could actually wrap the towel around me without that wedge of skin showing!!

    Having sugar free chocolate daily?

Yes I am the same. Honestly if you are only having a small amount I can't see the harm, personally I have a coke every other day and the same with chocolate. I am still loosing but half a kilo a week

    Having sugar free chocolate daily?

If you stop loosing weight cut them out but if they aren't effecting your weight loss have them

    Acid Reflux

It's different than heartburn. It's the acid that causes heartburn, except it flows back up into your esophagus. It happened to me day and night. Nighttime was the worst. Imagine laying in bed sleeping and suddenly feel like you're choking in your sleep, yeah that's reflux. Sometimes it comes up into your nose too. At least it did for me. Then I started sleeping in a recliner. It didn't stop the reflux, it just prevented being woken suddenly to choking on stomach acid. Lap band and sleeve seem to alter the function of the spinchter that closes off the stomach from the esophagus. So now that my lap band has been removed, it seems I have traded the reflux for constant heartburn. Now if I eat something spicy, my esophagus feels the way your skin would feel if you had a burn that you put hot water on. My esophagus actually feels scalded. I'm thinking about this now as I'm about to have some buffalo wings before the superbowl, lol. It's a miserable existance.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Hello every one, I hope the world of wonderful weight loss is great for everybody and all stalls have broken. I have just come out of a 4 week stall and am overjoyed. My calorie intake was just too small to let my body loose anything. Now that I can eat fish and seafood my protein intake is going up to about 50 grams a day. I have no problems drinking anymore and am feeling the health benefits of that. Its been a bit of a struggle but I am getting there a little slower than lots of you but I dont mind being a straggler. My dietician said to begin exercising so I am going to begin walking. The weather is horrid here and I am going to have to force myself out of the door. I have started leaving clothes on the too big to clean up in pile. Instead of skirts sliding up my belly to my bra, now they slide off if I dont catch them quick enough . Not good when the postman comes. Have a good week everyone
  9. I am having gastric sleeve surgery on March 2. I currently weigh 316 and have had health problems due to my weight. I am looking forward to being healthy. How much can I expect to loose if I follow the program? I realize that everyone is different.

Hi Diann, They say you will loose 60 -70% of your excess body weight. There are plenty of people on here who are legends and gone the extra mile and lost all their extra weight and weigh 'normal'. Good luck

  10. I am at 6 months, and I can tolerate any type of food without any issues. I couldn't tolerate fruit skin the first few months, not even a tiny little bit. I would get a stuck feeling and get a ton of saliva building up (aka foamies.) Up to now if I do not chew well enough of anything solid, I get the foamies. That is the extent of it for me. Sleeve here you need to look at what is rite for you , how much weight you need tk loose and so on I had sleeve I was 100 lbs. over weight I’ve lost 40% in 2 months this was rite for me but have a friend that got sleeve also 1 week before me I think she should had done the bypass she is much larger then me and is eating way to much. So you need to be honest with your team and see what is best for you , you can always get sleeve and go back if it wasn’t rite but you can’t go to just a sleeve from a bypass.
  13. Hello all, I just discover this forum, it is great to have a group of people sharing experiences, I found that no matter how much I thought I read about the surgery, it is different when you are living it. I had my surgery on 2/3/22 my weight was 253 I was loosing weight fast but yesterday and today I slowed down, I am 235 today but not complaining. I am having issues drinking the recommended amount of water and since today I can have non clear liquids, I will have some oatmeal for breakfast, I am excited, the complication so far is that maybe one of the medicines gave me an allergy my face was all red and it was painful but that is going away now, I started working from home yesterday and sitting for long periods hurts my incisions I have to remember to stand up more often, but that was one of the contributing factors to my weigh. Good luck to all of you who are going trough this, a friend of mine who had the same surgery keeps reminding me that it will get better soon.

    13 Days post op

I’m going to be honest and tell you I had bypass and almost feel no restriction. I measured and weighed everything to make sure I was not overeating. At 4 months I listened to my body very very quietly and consistently to learn my new signals. If I hiccup or sneeze I have gone too far. It’s when I hear or feel a gentle rumble sensation that is the just right spot. I can miss it easily so to keep loosing weight I still have to portion and measure everything. I know I can maintain when I get to my goal, because I can listen. Really though, no restriction at 6 months, I can eat half a pizza easily and still gain weight. The weight loss truly comes from hard work only. I do feel like I have regained a sense of signals from my body. My old satisfied signal came at 45 minutes. Now it’s 20-35 minutes and I can sense it easier.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Hello everyone. My VSG was on 11/15/21. I have lost a total of 51 lbs. I am also going through a stall at this time. I haven't lost anything in the last 2 weeks. Its a little frustrating but at the same time I am amazed at how I've lost these 51 lbs. and need to keep going. I do not notice a difference when I see myself in the mirror but I have noticed my clothes fitting better and a little loose. No one has said anything about me looking thinner but it has been cold here and I've had to wear hoodies or a coat. I know I've lost lbs. and my doctor says I am doing well. I just don't see the progress in the mirror.
  16. I agree with listening to the medical personnel. However, ask them WHY they are giving you these directions. Once you have surgery, you need to be aware that "grazing" (unplanned snacking, eating too frequently) can cause you to not loose much or regain your weight, because you're constantly re-filing your stomach as soon as there's room, and usually with not healthy food. Also, most people think exercise burns a lot more calories than it does (most calorie counters are completely wrong on how many calories you will burn and overestimate it), so eating because you've exercised is not always the right response. but... you will never last in your life long journey if you ignore your hunger. I never lost my hunger after surgery and had to eat 5-6 times a day because I could only eat a little at once. I agree that you should tell the doc/pa/nutritionist that not everyone is on the same page!
  17. I’m 5’7 215lb BMI is 34 I think . I want to get to 150. I’m okay with a slower rate . I’m so afraid of the loose skin but it is what it is :)

    Gastric sleeve

I think you may be in the intial period of the surgery and it takes time to get adjusted to a new lifestyle. Yes you won't be able to binge or have big portion of food like you used to but post-Op your portion sizes do increase. I also have PCOS and have dealt with and even now dealing with it's horrendous side effects. Hirutism, acne, no periods, weight gain, dark patches, skin tags, metabolic syndrome, high BP and HR (but never took meds for it) anxiety, depression you name it and I have/had it. I'll anyday take this surgery over having to deal with plethora of PCOS related symptoms. My acne has gotten better, blood pressure and HR have normalized so far. No periods still. But I am sure as I continue to lose, some of these side effects will minimize. There's no guarantee, but I am sure I am on a better boat post-Op. My cravings and binge eating have also gotten better, which was never the case post tons of diet plans. This surgery is definitely a boon for many. But it takes time, patience, work and sacrificing of certain elements. Like many suggested, try therapist and see that may help or give it couple of months of adjustment. Good luck.

    PNW Recommendations?

Oh man, now that I am hearing others combined the surgeries that might be a deal breaker for me. I want to just take care of it all at once if I can, because getting time away from work/taking care of my parents will be hard enough for one surgery much less multiple. As it is I feel like getting time off for my bariatric surgery took about my entire 6 month waiting period to coordinate. It’s funny because in terms of where the loose skin is, my stomach is obviously objectively worse, but my arms are what bother me the most. I dream of wearing a sleeveless top someday, or waving at someone and having my arm not make a “thwack, thwack” noise.

    PNW Recommendations?

Well, doesn’t look like anyone had suggestions thus far so I’ll just update my own thread 😜. I contacted Dr. Hayes and Dr. Waldorf, both in Portland, OR to see about setting up consult appointments. Both had good reviews but we will have to see how initial appointments go. My list of what to ask is: 1. Costs, and what are reasonable combinations of surgeries? 2. I have a lot of loose skin on the upper abdomen, would a traditional tummy tuck address this or is there another option? 3. I’ve read about drainless tummy tucks and I’d have a strong preference for that (don’t know why but drains really freak me out), is that a possibility and why/why not. 4. As a “far down the wishlist” idea, addressing the sad state of my cleavage post children and 175 lb weight loss would be nice. I don’t think I want implants but would like to hear a surgeons thoughts. If anyone else has any thoughts, let me know! My dream is to get consults with both on the same day (morning, afternoon) so I can take one trip. I know both surgeons are quite popular however so I may be a long time out, and coordinating like that may be a long shot but a girl can dream.
  21. Sleeved Dec. 22nd and have only lost 15 lbs. a little disappointed. However, since I’m older it’s ok as I don’t want to have skin surgery. Having some difficulty getting all my protein in, those drinks are expensive. Good to hear from you. Good luck everyone.
  22. He is basically skin and bones and a giant but dysfunctional brain. We're still very close. The word in Spanish is "amigovios", if you speak Spanish. If not, it's a cross between "amigos" (friends) and "novios" (boyfriend/girlfriend). He's actually really supportive of my weight loss efforts, despite liking larger women and not understanding weight issues at all. He's 5'10" and weighs 135lb soaking wet and holding a cheese stick (that is literally how he weighed himself when he was here last).
  23. Yeah, these are more for peeps who actually exercise. Though i imagine someone with 6 percent body fat with little to no muscle would essentially be comprised literally of just skin and bones! ”semi-ex boyfriend”….😂 LOVE. IT.

    A stall already?

That's not odd - pretty much what I've experienced! Eating less calories isn't the answer and I imagine that will just create more problems. Your body needs those calories. Stalls are your body's time-out to deal with the trauma of the surgery and the sudden prolonged severe drop in caloric intake. If anything, upping the calories and exercise has been the best way I've found to break the stalls. I'm averaging about a kilogram of weight loss a week, which is what I was losing when I was doing calorie counting and exercise the last time I made a decent effort of losing the analogue way - before I finally accepted I needed surgical help. So I've not experienced the "weight melting off" or "honeymoon period" so many others talk about on here. And while it can get you down, I look at the long term bright side. Slower steadier weight loss is healthy, the number is still going down, and hopefully this means our skin has a better chance of springing back, and our hair loss will be minimal. Fingers crossed!
