I unfortunately had the balloon in 2016. I lost a total of 20 pounds mostly in the beginning. After I had it removed I immediately gained back the 20 pounds. After it is removed you have a big void in your stomach which was immediately replaced with over eating. To this day I am a bit embarrassed that I spent so much money on a procedure that did not work. I am now on the keto diet and have lost nearly as much as I did with the balloon. Best of luck to you.

My husband of 17 years is just really driving me CRAZY!!!! I've made a lengthy post about some health stuff I have going on right now (reflux, esophagitis, gastritis, esophageal spasms, and esophageal dysmotility which they think is caused by a hernia...waiting for appt for scope) and he's using it as an excuse to just stop working out, stop eating right, stop everything. None of what I have going on is from my surgery. I don't have any leaks, strictures, blockages, nothing. BUT, this started after I did an insanely intense workout, so everyone is thinking that's the cause. ANYWAY, he has a pattern of quitting stuff when he starts, as soon as it gets hard. College, 3 different side businesses, working out, keto, vegan, low/no fat, calorie counting, bariatric surgery (had 1 consult, set up the nutritionist appt and backed out. Did this 3x before they said he couldn't come back), etc etc etc. He's always been like this, but it's gotten worse over the last year or so. He literally follows through on NOTHING. Not one single thing. OH, unless it's involving wrestling or gaming. Oh THEN his follow-through is on point. Can't let his guild down!! Can't let his buddies down!! Can't miss wrestling (he literally watches Mon - Fri, and if there's pay per view on the weekend, he watches that, too). I work full time and pay all the bills. The deal we have is I will work and he is to take care of the house, grocery shopping, etc (I have a much higher earning potential than he does, and I love what i do, and he doesn't like to work, and I hate household stuff, so in theory the deal works) but he's been slacking on that, too. I'm cleaning up behind him, doing chores, grocery shopping. He's sleeping or gaming or whatever. We've argued about it and I told him if I have to take care of the house AND work, then he needs to go get a job too. If I have to work full time, do the cooking and cleaning and shopping then what the heck is he even here for? He's not supportive anymore, we don't do anything together, we argue a lot, and he has NO FOLLOW THROUGH ON ANYTHING. He gets all excited "I'm gonna start a youtube channel" or "I'm gonna start streaming on Twitch" or "I'm going to design websites for a living" or "I'm gonna go to school and get my degree in Early Childhood Education and work as a teacher online" etc. And he ends up doing NOTHING. "I'm gonna work out and get healthy so we can lose weight and have better health together" and "I'm gonna eat right and make sure we have healthy food in the house so neither of us are tempted to cheat" and then he goes to Burger King and buys 2 double whoppers with fries and eats it all. I'm just so sick of it all. I hate even being around him sometimes. He's just so LAZY and has zero motivation for anything at all. It's infuriating!!!

Now I know fish and chips aren't considered healthy. I've done keto for about 4-5 months now, had Gastric bypass 10/21, looking forward to getting back to keto because I do like that lifestyle (when I can eat normal again), but i wanted to treat myself for once, does anybody know if fish and chips will digest properly 4 weeks post op(soft food stage)? I am on week 2 of a 3 week liquid diet. I get the point of this, but can I not just have some chicken?? I want to chew!! And that’s low fat, I’ll stay in keto. I’m so desperate. The thought of soup and shakes make me sick🤢

My wife has lost one lb less than me with no surgery. When I did my preop diet she did it with me and has stayed doing keto since my surgery. I try not to be jealous or competitive with her because she's definitely more active and ten years younger. But damn, I had surgery! In all honesty I'm so grateful she's been eating well. It's helped me so much and I'm very happy for her. I know I couldn't have lost this much weight without surgery. Back on topic. I'm weighing myself once a week mostly. Sometimes if I happen to be naked I might hop on. I don't log it though. I had a brutal stall but seem to be creeping down again. I'll play it by ear from here on out. -
I think there are many roads to the same truth. Love all the advice. Congrats on making the decision to take charge of the regain now while it's only 10-15lbs! Check out this poll and give your feedback if you think you'd be open to this? I honestly would go back to Bari Basics of your Forever Diet post surgery. That's the forever stage or highest stage. As @Healthy_life2 said, it's very important to clean house. Get rid of the crap in your pantry and fridge if possible. And if you live in a mixed house, see what you can do to sequester the crap to one spot that is not if your line of site! A separate cabinet or file drawer or fridge! Detox off the crap, especially sugar and white foods. 1. Food log, plan, weigh, measure EVERYTHING that goes in your mouth, good and bad. 2. Protein first. Meet your protein goals each day. 3. Lo glycemic veggies are next. (Low Carb Keto Veggies) 4. A tiny bit of healthy fats to help with satiety and vit/min absorption. 5. Drink 100oz of fluid per day (a good amount of it water). 6. Take your vitamins and minerals daily. 7. Get back to walking and then to your forever exercise program. 8. Keep foods SIMPLE-try to avoid super caloric, super gratifying foods. I think they make you eat more and cause hunger quicker. Stick to dense lean clean proteins and al dente veg and if still hungry low glycemic berries or underripe apples/pears in small quantities. 9. Weigh daily and take your measurements. 10. Deep breathe, do comedy therapy on Netflix, meditate or pray, hug your kids and fam/friends. 11. Ditch any caloric liquids other than the limited use of protein drinks. 12. Never underestimate the power of Rotisserie Chicken from Costco or Sam's.

I don't know how I forgot this, but look into PB2 or other Keto peanut butter powders. It's mostly the protein and fat left behind after they dehydrate peanut butter and remove some of the carbs (not all, but enough). You mix the powder with water to get the consistency you want and can eat it like peanut butter. I've also used it in the past with non-bariatric friendly smoothies and shakes, but I'm sure there are recipes out there that are more friendly. Actually I think I'm going to look some up now!

My husband has diabetes and is a type 2. He eats keto WOE and his blood glucose is down, his A1C has improved from 8.7 to 6.5. He is decreasing his insulin intake also. I don't know much about the Paleo diet, but I do know that the Paleo lets you have potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, and other vegetables that are not allowed on Keto due to too high in carbs. I try to limit my self to 15-25 grams of carbs a day and keep my protein to the 85g my doctor and Nut suggested. I don't add the extra fats like keto suggests, but I know people that do and are losing really well.

I have followed a keto way of eating since the beginning of my six month insurance-required diet (including during the post-op food stages). I like it because it is a sustainable way of eating for me and it meets the protein-heavy requirements of post-op life. I love it -- and have lost over 200 pounds embracing this style of eating! Thank you for this. Before my RNY on 7/25, I had spent 15 months on a version of keto. There were 2 critical things about my food choices: meet the nutrition requirements/macro limitations and EASY. I tried to turn food into a non-event. My family asked how I could eat/drink same things over & over. I was not looking for food, I was looking for fuel. Not going to lie though when odd urge struck me on keto, I'd look up recipes but if they didn't fit my target macros then I gave them a hard pass. I know youngest daughter thinks the way I was eating was too limited, boring, etc. I HAVE to have 'EASE' & convenience due to my work schedule & honestly do not want to spend too much time on cooking, food prep, etc. I DO want to know tips/tricks, etc. that are in line with what we should be doing the 1st couple of mos, to ensure that things like chicken, etc. go down smoothly (add broth, etc.) I was so torn on other thread re: Dr. Brian/Bryan? But I think none of us really..wants to blow this HUGE change we've made to our bodies. Most have heard about honeymoon period, the X amt of mos where you lose majority and how we can "break it or make it". I feel I'm going to have to get back in with a therapist as with all addictions, when you are "new in recovery"..In AA & NA they tell you to stay away from people, places and things you used to associate with as you don't have good chance at staying clean/sober if you repeat old behavior..even if you don't relapse. I can't afford a 'food relapse'. I need safety. Was tempted to check out recipes, but I kept reading different input & it brought me back to where my mind had been planning to go...which is for ME, I must KISS (must be simple). And I have to be accountable to stay in my "lane" dr prescribed. As I'm not 30 anymore, I can't afford for this opportunity to get sacrificed in a sudden urge to search for, what would be for me, distractions. Heck, some of you know due to last min dr. change, I've been doing full liquids (pre-op & post-op) for 49 days as of today & by time my dr let's me move to pureed, it will be 54 days. I had felt sorry for myself a few times but I'm going to change that by telling all of you how I absolutely rocked the liquids stage...I did it! I'm still doing it! Just to clarify, I feel we can find flavor & variation in things as we go down this road, but just like in recovery, we are warned to keep main focus of 1st year solely on self. No new relationships, etc. I've been clean for 30+ years now & let me tell you,a food addiction makes getting clean/sober look like child's play for ME personally. Glad we can all talk about this. I have to understand too that what 1 person can eat/not eat & successfully lose weight on does not make it true for me. Think I will keep training wheels on for now.

Hi. I had my surgery at the Washington Spire in April and I’ve never once regretted it. As above, I didn’t experience any pain. The nausea is difficult for the first few days, but it soon passed. I’m not a massive meat eater and typically get my protein through things like lentils and other pulses, cottage cheese, yoghurts etc. In all honesty I now have no interest in food, previously it was my crutch if I was feeling down, or a reward for when something was good. Now eating is just something I need to do. I eat out but I’m careful and will order a starter or a kids portion. I eat most foods in moderation and don’t seem to have an adverse reaction to anything. I get full really quickly and tend to push the food around my plate whilst I’m waiting for others to finish. I didn’t tell anyone other than my husband and parents that I’ve had the surgery so when friends ask I’ll say ‘oh I’m on a diet’ or ‘I’m doing keto’ and because they’ve known me dieting for so long they just accept it. I’ve avoided all alcohol to date - again I just say I’m on antibiotics or something along those lines to stop any questions. I struggle with my fluid intake but gradually it’s getting better. The sips get bigger but I don’t think I’d dare guzzle. My body tells me when something isn’t right - when I’m getting full I get ‘burpy’ and my stomach starts making noises. I took the package at the spire when I had a session with the dietician before and after the surgery so if your worried about what you can eat I’d say it’s worthwhile. good luck

I use keto-friendly sauces like Primal Kitchen’s unsweetened ketchup and avocado ranch or I make my own from scratch. They may not be the lowest calorie, but I use so little of it that it isn’t really an issue and they have fewer chemicals and other garbage in them so I’m willing to make that sacrifice. They’re very, very tasty. -
Programs vary all over the map in many areas, though the common elements are: Protein - consistent with need, but generally 60-80 g for women (though shorter than average women can do fine in the 50's) and 80-100 g for men. Protein need is most closely associated with lean body mass, hence the difference between men's and women's needs. Eat protein first, then veggies, fruits and starches Eat slowly, chew well Don't drink calories (protein drinks excepted, though you won't need to do them at this point) Avoid drinking with meals and for 30 minutes after meals. Drink a minimum of 64 oz, though the need is often higher depending upon activity and weather. Those are the things that are common to most plans. Minimizing sugar intake is often sited and sometimes a number is put on it; likewise, carb numbers are occasionally specified, though those can be deceiving and best not dwelt on. Calories are sometimes specified in programs and sometimes not. Those that work best seem to cluster in the 6-800 calorie range, but that is hard to maintain in a regain recovery program. It is best to work with your individual metabolic need, which again can be quite variable; Try for 1000-1200 and see how that goes; 12-1500 is often a maintenance level for many women. Keto and vegan/vegetarian are largely irrelevant - they are more lifestyle type diets that don't have any inherent weigtloss properties, though they can be used if one keeps the calories low enough. The key factor is what kind of diet will help you stay away from the high calorie/low nutrition junk that promotes weight gain. Good luck in your endeavor....

I've learned over the years of dieting to stay off the scale but for once a week. For instance, I started Keto again while I wait to get all my pre surgery stuff done and last weekend I decided to have a cheat meal of Chinese food. First cheat in a month. So the day after the meal I weighed an extra 7 lbs!! Now of course this was not true weight/fat weight because I obviously did not eat that much food to gain all those pounds. LOL It was water retention. BUT, it took me ALL week (as eating no-no foods usually does for me) before it went away and I went back down to what I weighed before that cheat meal. So yeah, you definitely can fluctuate BIG TIME depending on many factors. If you're ok with that then have at it. Otherwise I'd just do it once a week, same time of day, same clothes or naked if possible, after your bathroom business, etc. -
I'm a certified keto coach and after bari surgery, the rules are a bit different. You need protein to be your focus so may be eating more often than we recommend for the average Joe and you do NOT want your diet to be 75% fat, you want minimal fat, at a later date you may be able to increase the fat a bit as your carbs are below 20g/day to be properly keto so you need energy from somewhere. In the early days post op you just want to focus on your protein and fluids, which will put you into ketosis anyway. Loads of different ways to do keto, there is dirty keto, lazy keto, strict keto, so while you are recovering and on low carbs anyway research lots and find a way to do it that will fit in with your lifestyle.

Hmm. I don't have any protein shake recipes, per say, because I don't like protein powders. I only drink Fairlife protein shakes. And I do add a strong shot of coffee to a whole shake. For instance, my favorite is salted caramel Fairlife. I use the reuseable Keurig pods. I fill the pod to the top with Dunkin ground coffee, and brew it on the strong setting and only 4 oz. Usually I drink it iced. Then I add sugar free Skinny Syrup in the flavor Salted Caramel. I do the same thing with Vanilla Fairlife and add Pumpkin Spice syrup. I've done this with Chai as well. I added a sprinkle of cinnamon and some sugar free Skinny Syrup in vanilla flavor. I do the same with strawberry Fairlife and use Strawberry Skinny syrup, and the same with chocolate Fairlife... I tried to add unflavored protein powder to jello. I couldn't eat it, it was so disgusting to me. And I'm not super picky. So I never got around to trying it in pudding, but a lot do that. As far as the frozen fruit added to the lean shake with honey... there's sugar free keto honey substitutes. It's about half the calories of honey but still has about 11 carbs per tablespoon. You should ask your dietician about what will be acceptable for after surgery. Every surgeon seems to vary. My team wouldn't want me to add the frozen fruit or honey. That's why I use the skinny syurps. Lots of flavor, without calories or carbs. I mostly drink the Walmart brand Crystal Light sticks in my water. Blackberry Lemonade is my favorite. I never seem to get tired of those. I've drank them for probably 16 years now. -
I'm 12 days post OP and have the same thing, I called my Nurse and they said It's normal for the first few weeks and if I don't have pain or a fever it's probably nothing serious but they'll check in more when i have my 2 week check up... which is in 3 days. So i've done some reading and this is what I've read. It could be: Normal Change in Taste Following Surgery: Change in the taste, smell, or tolerance of food following bariatric surgery is a common phenomenon. In fact, one study has found that as many as 97% of patients experience at least one such change following these surgeries. Ketosis: Some describe keto breath as having a metallic taste in their mouth and a smell that's sweet, fruity or similar to nail polish remover. This is caused by the chemicals your body creates during ketosis, which are released from the body by exhaling. (Unlikely) Dysgeusia or Parageusia is associated with this condition where the taste buds are distorted. It is a serious condition because an aversion to many foods can lead to malnutrition after gastric bypass or sleeve surgery. The only way to really know is to check in with your provider. I'm doing Keto too and it is working for me! I lost weight regularly for the first year after being banded, then everything slowed waaaay down. I lost 12 pounds in the last year, and gained 5 back! I was walking more days than not and nothing was changing. It took me a long time to figure out that in that first year when I was FOLLOWING ALL THE BAND RULES, I had cut out bread and Pasta because they didn't go down well, and I also didn't eat many potatoes or sugary Snacks. I eventually started eating a little of this. trying a little of that, and was back to a diet of basically everything. My portions were getting bigger and I was taking bites like a normal person. I was doing lots of things wrong. And the weight loss stopped! Duh. I cut out added sugars on July 28, and then went full keto a few weeks later, and went from 195 to 179. I have a LOT of energy too. I would recommend reading the faq at this website to anyone who is interested http://www.reddit.com/r/keto. -

But you are STILL missing the point. In a thoughtfully constructed low carb or keto diet, protein consumption IS NEVER HIGH! It is only PROTEIN SUFFICIENT and that varies on your individual LBM, level of activity, age, gender and several other factors. And that number changes as you lose weight or if any of those variables change! My oncologist, a world-renown hematologist/biochemist who is one of the most well-documented researchers on hormone positive breast cancer, was on board with my low carb and IF approach during chemo/radiation/surgeries and now. I eat the same protein I always ate that is adequate only for my needs. It's about 60-74g of protein per day. Closer to 60g of protein per day as of right now. That's about 2 eggs, a pouch of tuna mixed with some 2% cottage cheese, and 3oz of grilled chicken per day. LOL. Nowhere would that constitute a "protein glut" or "gobs of protein" or be anything out of the ordinary in any form of diet! About 2-3oz of protein cooked per meal! That's it. Boom, you're done! LOL. -
I like putting cottage cheese, a couple scoops of vanilla protein powder, unsweetened cocoa powder, artificial sweetener, and, if it needs it to get going in the blender, some unsweetened almond milk and whipping it up (in the blender) into "chocolate mousse" (sorry I don't have amounts - I always just dump stuff in and adjust it until it's "right"). Sometimes I'll top it with some light - or sugar free - Cool Whip and some fresh raspberries. I've never gotten the Aldi's keto buns, but I've seen them in there. I'll pick some up next time I'm there! I get their 35-calorie bread a lot, though
