No, no Keto, I would never be able to reach the fat requirement AND keep my protein at 60-70g. Well first, I should have probably specified that I'm talking NET carbs, so I don't count fibre towards my carb count. And since I don't eat any bread, pasta, rice, root vegetables (except the occasional carrot or radish), added sugar, nor fruit (except the occasional berry) I can consistently be under 20g of net carbs a day. I basically eat alot of protein and salad, and its funny because when I do get the rare craving to eat something, its for meat or salad.

Jealous of others on here
A_new_sara replied to Mersh's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Have you tried the Parmesan crisps? you can buy them at Costco or make them and they are zero carbs! I eat keto so the fat doesn't prevent me from eating them.. and they are crunchy, like a replacement for chips.. also you can have pork rinds.. high protein and no carbs.. hang in there! You're doing great!! -

I'm hoping to get to 130 too, so we pretty much have the same starting weight and goal weight! I know exactly how you feel. I'm hoping the keto diet works for me too. The sleeve is such a great tool! Especially if you are good at going to the gym (which I'm not LOL) -
My doctor recommends a low fat diet but I am interested in trying the keto diet. Anyone try keto? I understand that my new stomach might not respond well to high fat.... I'm just 2 weeks post op and really looking forward to some soft food next week! Let me know what you think of the Keto diet! Sent from my SM-G935V using BariatricPal mobile app

Lying about not getting surgery is awful
Dinah55 replied to GinormousReislin's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I struggled with the tell or don't tell issue, and finally decided to be honest with family and friends. I didn't want the stress of making up some "I'm doing keto" story or something like that. And after a lot of thought, I decided that I really don't give a flyin' flip what anybody thinks about my surgery. If they don't like it, I couldn't care less. And as it turns out, I haven't gotten any negative reactions. People have really been supportive. If they disapprove, they haven't told me to my face, so I at least haven't had to listen to negative garbage. But to each his own. I can totally understand wanting to keep it under wraps. When I was younger, I probably wouldn't have been so open about it, but I'm now at an age where I don't give a hoot what anybody thinks about me! 😉 -
Almost quit on Day 1 of my pre-op liquid diet
moondoggie1983 replied to Yo-yo girl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Awesome! I’m dying at the licking of the pepperoni though! [emoji23] Lets see, I’m on day 6 now. You’re a lucky duck that you have so short a pre-op diet and I am jealous! I messed up on day four and had a tiny bit of shredded boiled chicken. Ugh! I thought that little bit would be ok since most people are doing a version of the keto diet. WRONG! I got soooo nauseous the whole next day! I guess after even just 3 days of all Optifast and jello solid “regular” food messed me up. But let me tell you, feeling like crap that whole next day sure made me not want to cheat EVER AGAIN! But, it also freaked me out because how am I going to feel on day 15 when I have some cream soup or pudding? Will everything normal make me feel gross? I was freaking out anyway because I’ve never had surgery and the anesthesia part is scary. Now I’m getting worried about all kinds of stuff! Eek! Tomorrow is my endoscopy so I guess I’ll get a taste of anesthesia then. How are you doing so far? What diet does your surgeon have you on? HW: 311 CW: 258 SW: We’ll see on May 10! Almost quit on Day 1 of my pre-op liquid diet
RickM replied to Yo-yo girl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It only takes a few hours for the stomach to be empty for surgery, which is why most surgeries, including GI procedures, have one stop eating after midnight or some such time, sometimes they may restrict one to clear liquids for a few hours before that, but otherwise it is similar to what one needs to do for an EGD. The shrinking the liver thing is something that is debated amongst the surgeons, as to how much improvement can actually be achieved with a week or two of dieting, but to the extent that it is therapeutic, it is the low carb/keto thing that has the beneficial effect; the liquid only diet that some programs impose is of questionable value in that regard as many programs don't impose any diet at all other than the standard day or night before thing. A couple surgeons I know specifically don't want their patients fasting for weeks ahead of time as they want them as strong and healthy as possible going into surgery - a lot of different philosophies and experiences out there that lead to these varying practices. There may be other reasons for the different pre-op protocols (other than, hopefully, "that's the way we've always done it") so it's best to follow your surgeon't plan even if it isn't fully explained -
Appetite back with a vengance!
BajanSleeve replied to BajanSleeve's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Congrats on your 93 lbs WL! I do know what I am 'supposed ' to eat. When I feel so hungry I would eat my foot or whatever is close to hand. I use the low fat Greek yogurt from Pricesmart brand which does not have much sugar or carbs at all. We have a pricesmart in Barbados I am breaking 25 years of food addiction and its been about 5 months now of changed eating. But its not easy at all. still difficult at times even after surgery.....God help me...……. When I am able to eat meats again (without blending) I will likely follow the keto diet which is what I had started to do a couple months prior to surgery -

Hi Bajan, Given your diabetes, none of these foods seem appropriate for you or any Bariatric patient for that matter! How could you not be hungry with these high carb foods messing with your blood sugar. The diet shows so little protein, no wonder you’re famished. If you can’t handle solid meat, eat tuna, canned chicken, rotisserie chicken or hamburger. It is so important that you change the types of food you eat. I would suggest a KETO diet to get you back on track. -

I'd be hungry if I ate what you are eating too. We all have different carb tolerances. Mine is quite low. When you eat carbs your insulin goes up, then you get hungry when it goes down. Low carb keeps it from spiking. I strongly recommend you start doing research and learning about low carb foods and recipes. You will have to experiment to see how low you have to go to help with the hunger. I have been experimenting for over 2 years and am at a point where I basically do high qualilty proteins (chicken, fish, beef and veggies (a lot of greens), and some berries. I did a lot of cheese, milk, greek yogurt (watch the sugar here, plain is better) in the beginning. Now more meat and low carb veggies. Lots of eggs and egg dishes also. You can do this and enjoy it. But you have to try different foods until you find what you Love. I also recommend you check out Paleo and Keto (DietDoctor) and the book The Obesity Code by Dr. Jason Fung. -
5 weeks and only 13 pounds less
Maggie1955 replied to Miami's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Are you sure you’re getting all your liquids in (64 or more ounces per day)? How many grams of protein are you consuming per day? I had my surgery on 1/2/18. I lost 20 pounds on the pre-op diet (which was almost 3 weeks long). I started out at 229 on 12/15/17 and was 209 on surgery day. Today I weigh 188.4. I had been in a stall for about 2 weeks. I started upping my protein a bit as well as upping the amount of liquids. In addition, I started playing around with keto type foods and I feel that has helped as well. I have only been walking as exercise, usually 2 1/2 miles every other day. I upped that to 3+ miles every other day and the scale started moving again. I have pretty severe degenerative disc disease in my entire spine, so I usually can’t walk every day due to pain. The days I do walk I try to push through the pain. Everyone will lose weight at their own pace. It sounds like you are a lower BMI, so you will likely lose way slower than someone whose BMI is higher. Hang in there......follow your plan and you will eventually start losing again. -
Almost quit on Day 1 of my pre-op liquid diet
TX4everLinds replied to Yo-yo girl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn’t know the liquid pre op diet had anything to do with Keto. I’ve been in ketosis since a few days after I started seeing the dietician but I still have to do a liquid diet for 7 days prior to surgery. I do think any preoperative diet is to help shrink the liver of fat but I also think the liquid diet helps prepare and empty the stomach for surgery. Doesn’t that make sense? It may also depend on how much weight they hope you can lose before anesthesia. I don’t know! It is confusing though. All the veterans always say follow YOUR surgeons plan. Good luck! -
Should I be “excited?”
BoredFatGirl replied to fiddlinjellybean's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am both nervous and excited. I have always been, at the very least, chubby. Like you, I have always settled for being 'less fat', rather than going for thin, or even in-shape. My weight has gone up and down (with a focus on going up) ever since I can remember and I never thought this surgery or being thin was something that would ever happen to 'me'. I have gotten used to being 'the fat friend', to having to wear certain things because of how I feel about my body, and having to even filter how I speak in public because of my insecurity. Learning how to mindfully eat and use food for fuel, rather than to fill a temporary emotional void, will, no doubt, be hard, but the mental struggle of getting that fat girl mentality out of my head once I actually achieve my goal is a whole other story, I imagine.. I've been on the keto diet myself (pre-op) and it has helped a lot with helping me focus on protein while being mindful of my fat and carb intake. Still, its not always easy. I am someone who loves to cook and am constantly looking up recipes, or seeing them pop up in my timeline on Facebook, and I can't tell you how many times I have thought about what I could make from the unhealthy choices real quick. I haven't though. And I honestly think its because of these forums. Use the tool your doctors have given you to lose the weight, and use these forums for the support you need to keep you going. Track everything! You got this! ♥ -
What is your all-time favorite protein?

QUEST! I lied, I have tried proteins before. I had a lot of quest vanilla powder and their bars back when I was doing keto. I loved the bars. -
I was sleeved in 2016, lost 87 pounds, gained back 25, keto constipates me.

Wanting to 'lick' foods while in liquid diet?
mswillis5 replied to Marla290's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Ok, just a few of my thoughts. Take them for what they are and are not exact facts. First, when or if you speak to your nutritionist make sure to mention that this happened (Just be honest with yourself and your team). Second, and this is where my thoughts come in but while I was on the pre-op liquid diet I didn't have any craving but my sodium level dropped significantly. I have to wonder if that is why you had that craving and that your body may be asking for a bit more salt. If you haven't had many electrolytes or have a "keto headache" then upping your salt quantity may be needed here. Now just take it as my 2 cents, but that is a potential cause of the craving or at least I would think it would be. After I consumed a significant amount of salt my keto headache went away. I did this by taking a broth based progresso soup and strained all of the solids out. This left me with a high sodium broth that tasted just like soup but with only a small number of calories. Good luck on your preop diet and you should be fine, but your bariatric team/nutritionist should be able to verify. I have read a few other stories of people eating much worse than you on the liquid diet here and if you need some validation on this, you can search for others mess ups. If we are honest with ourselves we will be able to achieve great results and be the best that we can be. -
please, for the love of god, do not start the g*dd*amn keto diet... there is the possibility that genetically this is your new set point. you haven't "failed" and there is nothing wrong with you. and your challenge now is to accept that fact, celebrate the progress you have made, and commit to eating and living healthy in the future.

A normal day of food post op?
BigSue replied to TrueNorth1's topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
I'm 4.5 months out. I eat 3 meals per day and no snacks (except 3 calcium chews per day for a total of 45 calories). My meals are typically 100-200 calories each and I typically eat 500-600 calories per day. If I'm low on protein for the day, I'll drink a protein shake or protein hot cocoa in addition to the meals. My meals are about half a cup each, a little more if there's lettuce because I figure that by the time I chew it up, it loses a lot of volume. Breakfast examples: Half container of triple zero yogurt with half a scoop of protein powder, raspberries/strawberries or PB2, keto granola or nut clusters Scrambled egg with 1/2 ounce cottage cheese, turkey sausage link Protein pancake with strawberries/raspberries and whipped cream Half packet of protein oatmeal with 1/4 scoop of protein powder, walnuts, and shredded carrots 4 ounces cottage cheese with nacho cheese seasoning Lunch: Protein bar if I'm at work; otherwise, same as dinner Typical dinner: Mexican casserole (chicken, cauliflower rice, salsa, black beans, cheese, plain greek yogurt) Salad with chicken and light dressing, topped with crushed Quest protein chips Chicken salad (shredded chicken, plain Greek yogurt, ranch seasoning), lettuce, tomato on half a 1 net carb tortilla with 1/4 ounce cheese White chicken chili Taco bites (shredded chicken, salsa, black beans, lettuce, tomato, plain Greek yogurt on Quest protein chips) Ricotta bake with turkey meat sauce Chicken or pork with sugar-free BBQ sauce, green beans -
I am going to ask my nutritionist today bout the Keto diet and if he feel as if i should do it but i have to hit onederland

I did a lot of cardio in the beginning to take advantage of the honeymoon or rapid weight loss stage. At about 7-8 months out I added in more weights. I found that extreme low carb/keto zaps a lot my ability to lift heavy so if you are trying to lift, eat a balanced diet in addition to getting in your Protein.

I was reading about some sleevers who have had a lot of success with the Keto diet and I was thinking of doing some research about it. I thought it would be something I'd like to try. I called my surgeon today and asked their nutritionist her thoughts on it, and she said DO NOT DO THE KETO DIET because it's a fad and not good for a sleeve patients because it's high in fat and it could really cause damage. Are there any sleevers here who follow keto?

I don't do Keto myself (I am just unable to get the amount of fat in that is required), but I did some research on it a while back. I found this site a good first step resource (before you get into the more detailed, science-y stuff) : https://www.ruled.me/start-here/

So due to all of my web searches looking for food options and recipes, all of my Facebook ads have become low-carb food product recommendations. It's kind of ridiculous. A lot of them are very much marketed for keto diets so the fat content is usually too high, but occasionally a gem will slip through. One of the best surprises was Taste Flavor Company low calories sauces. They carry a kind of steep price tag, but I figured it was worth checking out. BOY WAS IT EVER! I sprung for the bundle that gave me all 4 flavors, even though I am not a fan of ranch and didn't expect to enjoy the Cilantro Lime Ranch sauce. I was soooo wrong. So far the only one I haven't tried yet is the Cherrywood Chipotle BBQ sauce because I haven't really made a meal that it would be a good fit for, but considering how in love I am with the other 3 flavors, I expect it will taste amazing. With the exception of the Spicy Garlic Parm, it's 10 calories in 2 tablespoons of sauce. Spicy Garlic Parm is 1 tablespoon for 10 calories. I highly recommend them! https://tasteflavorco.com/

I'm also 5 years post VSG this year. Dealt with some regain about 3 years ago. Also lost a parent, moved, changed jobs, etc etc etc. My regain was slow and I did the "I can eat everything in small amounts" thing for a while. I went crazy online looking for the magic reset button. I consulted on a RNY revision. I was desperate...then a really ugly health issue (one that I had surgery to help combat) returned and was really bad and I had a very REAL 'come to Jesus meeting' with a doc who told me some cold hard truths. I went full on Keto and haven't looked back. Got the health thing back under control. Lost my regain. The BIGGEST thing- I had to get out of my own head and realize that I knew what to do, I just had to DO IT. So I started attending support groups again, seeking out all sorts of them that were NOT affiliated with my surgeon, since I was embarrassed to run into someone familiar. I also met with a new nut. psych and NP team. I focused on my health and thankfully, mostly got it back again. I know that this will be an ongoing issue for LIFE, for me the work never stops and unfortunately life doesn't just pick up one day as a 'former' WLS patient. I will forever be a WLS patient, working through my plan, dealing with struggles and keeping the focus on point.

Apparently the patients my surgeon put in the liquid diet called that frst 5 or so days hell week. I’ve done the shake diet a couple of times in the past (for about 6 weeks each time - awful & hardly lost any weight). I cannot tell you how relieved I was my surgeon said no shakes for me but a dietician supported diet which was keto. Survive the first week & it does get easier. The worst aspect is the withdrawals from sugar, carbs, caffeine.
