Officially sleeved! Couple of questions and one complication to report. :(
bigloser2014 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery was on May 9th and let me start by saying that all the pain that I went through and the discomfort I am going through right now, is well worth it! I have lost 21 pounds from my HW of 258 bs. Looking forward to many more! Bad news first: I have super tiny veins, very hard to find. Before surgery, the nurse could not find one so the Anesthesiologist came to try to start an IV. The stupid doctor inserted the IV inside of my left wrist. Within minutes, it had infiltrated and had started to swell up. Another Anesthesiologist came with an ultrasound machine and found one vein in my right arm where the IV went. During my stay, the blood draws were a nightmare since many techs poked me several times to find a vein. As a result, my whole arm is black and blue. I could live with that but since yesterday, there is bad tingling in my left hand and my range of motion is almost negligible. it feels like I am holding a live electric wire in my hand, Every time I extend my foreman, an electric shock runs through it. The more I researched this, I found out that this is caused by nerve injury and that the IV in wrist is a no-no. I went to my surgeon today who was shocked to hear that the other doctor tried to put an IV there. So, tomorrow I am going to an ortho hand surgeon for a consult. I am so upset at that stupid doctor and hoping that is just an inflammation that pinched a nerve. I don't want another surgery. Now to a couple of questions: How long before the incisions healed and the pain got better? I cannot sleep on either one of my sides. How long before you were able to eat more than 200 calories? I have found ways to sneek in Protein and had around 30 grams today. I know I need a lot more but that is a start. I am trying to stay hydrated too. Sipping Water all day, drinking some gatorade and even had a sugar free popsicles but calories were not enough to survive. Thank you for all your support during this process! This website rocks! -
Diabetics who got sleeved....
chinamama replied to ccaramel27's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've been a type 2 for 20 years. Before surgery was taking glucovance and viktoza. Diabetes was getting out of control before surgery, but I do think that had to do with my band (stomach had prolapsed and was adhered to my liver). BS was higher during hospital stay, and they were giving me insulin. Since being home I'm only on viktoza and my morning numbers are running about 137, previously 180's. I have hit 200 a couple of times, but not consistently. 3 months labs will be next week. Sooo it appears my BS is better but not gone. And, i probably would have had the same results with bypass. Unfortunately that may be what it is since I have had diabetes for so long. -
Where is everyone from and sleeve date
tscrapbooking replied to djnkidz's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on may 16 - from vancouver, bc - sleeved by dr. Nguyen in richmond, bc -
From what I can tell, it happens to everyone. Just remember you are probably losing inches, don't be concerned about the number. It will go down. I weigh daily during the week, but I don't let the number on the scale upset me bc I know it can fluctuate. :-) Sent from my iPhone using VST

I had my surgery on February 15th. Since then I don't feel any different. I don't feel full since started soft purée diet. I am hungry all the time. I lost my sense of smell. The only difference is I feel tired. I will confess I ate two ritz crackers the other night Bc I felt so nauseous. What am I doing wrong?! Could my pouch Be open? Is it beneficial to restart my phases again? I feel horrible for eating the crackers.

Why The Concern All Of A Sudden?
Chris S replied to AnewMe@28's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Here's what I enjoy. I recently started a new job and a group of us went out to lunch. We went to the local McDonald's and everyone was ordering their biggie meals. I ordered off the $1 menu and got a McDouble, a small fry and a bottle of Water. As we sat to year, I pulled the top bun off and started eating the burger. After a few minutes, one of the group asked the inevitable question and I answered that I had weight loss surgery and don't eat a lot at each meal and concentrate on the Protein. That started the "My (so and so) had that done and you've got to be careful because they gained all of their weight back" BS. IT amazes me how everyone knows someone that wasn't successful and yet they lump me in with that. People would so rather have a sense of moral superiority than they need to possess. -
BS = We all know what that is MS = More of the Same PHD = Piled Higher and Deeper

Hi, I am also from Ocean County and had my surgery up north, but I'm looking for a dr. closer to me so I can get my fills and not travel 2.5hrs away. I just got a bill from Horizon BC/BS for $900 for the fill with fluoroscope and I'm sick over this because I need to get another one but I'll be darned if I'm going to pay that much. How much do you pay for yr fills? And what insurance do you have?

Has anybody had their fills done at University of Penn (Philly) and how did you make you? Any charge with BC PPO insurance?

mjsprague1017 commented on mjsprague1017's blog entry in Blog 36751
Errrr i could spit rocks i am so mad at the WII FIT! I bought a Wii about 3 mons ago bc Wii Fit was coming out and i really thought it would be great that i could do some strengthening at home. i order my Wii Fit over the internet and today it came in. I was really excited. I was following the instruction and it was asking my height and bday. Then is said alright now its time to weigh you and please step on. So i step on the Wii board and guess what IT TELLS ME.... IM OVER THE WEIGHT LIMIT TO PLAY THE Wii FIT:crying:! ERRR i mean im just upset with this whole ordeal. I know this is my fault i should have never got so over weight:glare:. So my newest GOAL is to be able to play on my Wii Fit:mellow:. I read the manual and it says the max limit is 330lbs. and my scale says i weigh 334.5:confused2:. So hopefully in 5-10 lbs i will be plaing my Wii Fit. Ugh one more thing that my weight controls:thumbdown:..cant even play a fitness game. Mandi Jo -
My seminar was 3/10, surgery 5/6. Insurance is BC/BS, as long as my BMI was over 40 or I had co-morbidity, no hoops. Surgeon's office made sure I qualified, and actually applied to the insurance company, not my regular Dr. I thought it was fairly quick!

No Where Else To Turn
ooffa511 replied to ooffa511's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's true. I blame his bs the reason why I smoke. He is easier to handle baked and that's when we get a long. I have an idea what our therapist will say tonight and I know all fingers won't be pointed to hubby. Ooffa -
No Where Else To Turn
ooffa511 replied to ooffa511's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My husband and I smoke together. Honestly I feel at this point that's the only thing we have in common. Its hidden from the children but it's my way of staying calm. I'm scared to try xanex bc I have such an addictive personality. I am so desperate to stop smoking pot. I quit cigarette 5 months ago. I am really truly trying to turn my life around. But I'm at a hurdle I am Jewish but we are raising our children catholic. I have a modern family life. My kids have the same bday 7 years apart so bday and hoikdays consist of my husband and in laws my fam and my ex w my ex in laws. And we all get along. It's hilarious. Anyway back to the point. I have been through soooo much and turn to g-d but I feel like he keeps taking a **** in living room and walks away and I have to keep cleaning it up ( I hope u get my analogy). I truly feel stuck. I am thankful for everyone u guys are saying bc I feel like I am the only one. And as much as my friends understand they don't I am a passionate person and have a drive for life but it's been gone for years. The sleeve felt like my salvation and now that the weeks are going I am realizing where the change has to happen. I will not end my marriage tonight bc I am head over in heels w my hubby. The damn book 50 shades of grey got us back but it was for the moment. A lot to swallow at once. And I feel a lot of it is self created. Change is tough. Especially when there is a lot of change that has to be done. -
Band slipped, but it's OK!
Catherine55 replied to meandtheboys's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I want to comment on two points that Spartan made. First . . Based on my own reading and research, I do not believe that this is accurate, and a significant percentage of the bandsters who I know have either met and surpassed their goals or are well on their way to doing so. I'm willing to bet that, of people who actually work with their bands, more than 90% are able to get to their goals. As reliable as that . . unnamed study . . by an unspecified group in Europe . . that hasn't been published yet. . and where you didn't have the underlying data. . sounds, I'm calling BS on this. The reason the band works so well is that it makes it physically impossible (well, difficult) to overeat. I just do not believe that any significant percentage of the non-banded people were able to avoid overeating for the year + that would have been required for them to actually enjoy the full benefits of being banded. I am not trying to be inflamatory here, but when I see posts like this that seem to misstate statistics or make vague, unsupported references to unnamed studies, it makes me mad. It seems irresponsible and I don't like that it might discourage bandsters or prospective bandsters from believing that they can get to goal. I have my own statistics and 18-month long personal scientific study on life with the band. That's all the proof I need that this process absolutely works when you follow the rules more often than not. And, if I can do it, so can anyone else who is willing to put in the effort. Catherine -
What preops diet taught me
Leepers replied to ashemademe's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
To me, I found that hunger is just a sensation. Like when your neck hurts because you slept wrong. Hunger is not am emergency that needs to be immediately fed. I found that once I was able to control my response to hunger out became much easier to manage. -
Congrats on starting your journey, I also have BS/CA and approval was in less than a week... My surgeons office had me to do a 3 month supervised diet....that was their practices formality...not BS/CA which does not require any pre-diet anymore.

Married ladies, did your dh go to your PS consult with you?
beachcitygirl replied to spoiltmom's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I had 5 surgeries in less than 2 years. 2 shoulders, Gall Bladder, Lap Band, and Breast reduction with a lift. My husband went to all appt. with me, held my hand throught it all. Changed my babdages, fed me, made sure I always had everything I needed, most of all loved me through it all. it has been a year since my last surgery. He still sleeps in the spare room and hasn't wanted to be intimate with me. he is still very loving and suporrtive, but I think he saw me as a patient and now has a hard time seeing me as a loving wife. I think the breast reduction sent him over the edge. It was brutal. -
Hi!! Im so glad I found this thread! I am also from SJ. Pittsgrove (my property is on both Salem and Cumberland Counties!) I have not been banded yet, however I hope that the posibility is in the near future. I have been researching Drs that my insurance covers, and I am considering Dr. Gus Slotman from Cherry Hill NJ. He is part of the Lourdes Medical Associates. I was wondering if anyone else has heard of him? (:rolleyes2: or ) I actually Googled him to see what I could find, and I found nothing but positive reviews. I have BC/BS NJ Health Insurance, and I was wondering if anyone else had that and could tell me how difficult it was to get approved. I called them, and they told me it was covered, but I needed a letter of Medical Necessity from my Doc. So if anyone has any suggestions for me, that would be BEAUTIFUL, as i kinda feel overwhelmed. Choosing to get surgery is kinda a big deal.
-
Riane226, I have BC/BS of Nj also. They made me jump through alot of hoops and didn't send me my approval until 5 days before surgery but they did pay for everything in full. I think they just make you go through so much to make sure you're serious, lol. Let me know if you have any specific questions! Good luck! Julie

I have had two friends who were infertile with no real reason. One was tiny. After she gained 20 lbs, she conceived. Another, was a friend who did medifast with me. She was infertile for so long, they adopted two babies. Seven years later (her kids now 7 and 4), she did medifast. Three months in, she finds out she is pregnant. Turns out, if you lose weight quickly, it messes with your hormones. So, the lesson is to now use bc until the year Mark. And good luck!!! Sent from my KFTBWI using the BariatricPal App

Got my Surgery Date!!!! :) 4/2/18! Calling out any April surgery buddies!!!!
Postop replied to Glamgirl's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I'm an April surgery (2005). I puked a lot my first year. Mostly bc I was drinking too much after eating as I was parched. It could definitely be bc you're eating too quickly or too much too quickly. This isn't to say you're eating too much (especially if it's protein) it just may be too much at one sitting. I still need 2 or more sittings for a meal. -
I had my lap band surgery in August 2013. I had the normal up and downs. Received 5cc fill for the first year. Lost 50 lbs. Great. I had an incident where chicken got caught and had the cc's removed and endoscopy done. Afterwards, they took 6 months to give me 3cc fill. That's where I am now. I still have moments that I eat too fast or the wrong thing, but I do upchuck but not very often. My problem has been diarrhea and constipation. I would take pepto for the runs and a bowel softener for the other. That has been going on the whole 2 years. My problem now that concerns me is that I haven't lost anymore weight. Also that whenever I eat or drink I get an upset stomach every time I try to eat a little. I can't seem to get down a Protein drink, Water sometimes gags me, other drinks seem a little strong and gives me an upset stomach. I take about 20 pills (mostly RX) a day. I can feel the heaviness in my throat and stomach. I don't seem to be getting enough protein and liquids. I know what and how much I need, it's getting it down with no queasiness. I also am diabetic and at one point my blood sugar got down to 36. I took glucose pills and a glass of milk. Now my lap band dr. says I don't really need anymore fills. And everything I've said above happens most of the time. At other times I feel great. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong or right. Other big problem which may be due to the weight loss is that my husband said he no longer desires me. We barely touch, talk, or whatever. He works still at 66 and I stay at home. I don't drive. I am 65. We're like roommates. I do see a psych dr and I might start going to a therapist to figure out what I can do to help my husband trust me emotionally bc he shut down along time ago. Just recently after a heart op I decided I was no longer going to be depressed and I've done it since March 6 2015. I didn't want to waste the next 20 years like I lost the many years in the beginning of my disease. I have Bipolar Disorder Rapid cycling and most of those pills are psychiatric drugs. I have made his and my girls life a living hell for over 30+ years. In and out of hospitals. My husbands emotions just shut down. I don't know if this is a subject for BariatricPal but I'm throwing it in. I have a lot of drooping skin and a lot of wrinkles. What can I do to be more lovable without first having body lift. That is $$$$ I haven't got. Can anyone help?

any problems with blue cross blue sheild of Ga.
PATCHELTON replied to swiley's topic in Insurance & Financing
I don't have a Ga plan, but I have Blue Choice from BC/BS in Maryland. They took 4 weeks from submission of paperwork to approval. I had to do a 6 month supervised diet prior to submission, so you could say they took 7 months, but I had very little out of pocket expense, though they don't pay for fills once you are out of the 90 day post surgery period. All in all, after reading some of the nightmares posted here, my approval process wasn't bad at all. I even used an out of network dietician and psych evaluator (paid them myself), since they were on the team that was doing my surgery. I feel for those getting an insurance runaround.
