So I will have my surgery on the 18/12 I see a lot of you have Protein goal and all i have is to do 25% protein 50 % vegetable 25% grains... They are mostly saying just do the Canadian eating guide.... From what I noticed a lot of post-op do keto or count calories, the guide I have from my surgeon is well... pretty bad Here are all my guidelines op day: Water or ice only day 1 to 4: water, clear broth, fruit juice (unsweetned and with water added), Jello (no precision if sweet or no sugar) day 5 to 8: cereals with milk (1 or 2%), fruit (mashed) day 9 to 15: cereals, white toast without crust, egg, chicken, fish with a light sauce (bechamel, tomato) veggies (all mashed of course) day 16 to 30: egg, cheese less than 20% fat, lentils, soft fruit, fish, chicken, ground meat 31 + regular / tender food. ground rule is: 3-4 part of milk and substitute 1 fruit portion, 2-3 vegetable portion 3 portion of bread/grain etc 2-3 portion of meat and substitute until i get to the numbers for the canadian eating guide ..... So do you guys think I should follow this guide or try to hit some macros?

I am just starting to ease into this. There is more than enough protein. My weight will tell me if there are too many carbs, Right now I am having a hard time keeping weight on, especially when I exercise a lot. I am riding in a distance bike race next month and another triathlon in a few months. Also starting some great hiking in this wonderful weather right now. My carbs are all whole foods - cooked grains (teff, amaranth, millet, sorghum, steel cut oats, buckwheat, quinoa), legumes (beans, peas, edamame, palo verde beans, mesquite beans, lentils), and starchy veggies (Sweet potato, butternut squash, carrots, beets). Fats come from avocado, olives, nuts/seeds I cannot begin to eat the volume of fresh veggies/fruit that most people who follow this plan eat. My pouch just can't hold that much. So it is definitely an experiment for me. If I decide this is a good move, I will be consulting with a medical practitioner who specializes in whole food plant based eating, and who is also well versed in bariatrics. WLS throws a curve ball into any eating plan, whether it is Intermittant Fasting, Keto, or WFPB, My highest priorities are to get my protein in, take my vitamins, and eat food that is as nutritionally dense as possible.

It seems to be pretty common for people to be active on forums (and in post-op support groups for that matter) for a year or two and then disappear. They've just moved on with their lives and don't feel like they really need it anymore, I guess. I stick around because it keeps my head in the game - and there are a few of us still around here, I'm guessing for the same reason - but most people do disappear after awhile. And not just on this forum - I've seen it on others and....as I mentioned...in post-op in-person support groups, too. I'm battling with losing a 10-lb gain. I've always monitored myself really closely (weighed myself several times a week and track every bite of food that I eat), so I just cut back on calories by about 200/day and increased my exercise. It works, but it's S-L-O-W going. But then, I'm 4 lbs overweight (according to the BMI charts), so I wasn't expecting any huge, quick drops. One-two lbs a month was about what I expected - unless I was willing to drop to sub-1000 calories or something, which I wasn't... regain once you're a few years out is pretty common. The trick is to catch it and deal with it before it gets out of hand. There are some vets who've had success with programs such as WW, Keto, and IF - so you could always try one of those if your current method isn't doing the trick. Lots of people have managed to re-lose their regains, so it can be done!

New study, that fat is the cause of adiposity
Creekimp13 replied to Sosewsue61's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
True. But we should also pay attention to history. If we've tried something in the past, and had great success that wasn't sustainable....maybe we need to rethink it? I'm not a stranger to keto, btw....I lost 50 pounds on it once upon a time in three months... and regained it just as fast. Keto made me feel wretched...I had actual dreams about food while on it, which was very weird...and my cravings for junk were incredibly intense and unpleasant. When I fell off the wagon, I kinda lost my mind...went nuts and made up for lost time. It wasn't pretty. You are dead right....to each their own. And I know some folks do have luck with high protein carb restrictive diets. But for me? Carb restrictive diets were a recipe for me to fall off a cliff. Also, my BUN went up (my kidney function suffered because they had to work so much harder dealing with all that protein) Not saying I haven't fallen off the wagon with my current diet....but when I do...the sensation is way different. I go a little off course, feel stupid, and don't have any problems getting right back in the saddle. I stall for a day or two, but don't really gain. Falling off Keto, I'd gain five pounds instantaneously and went completely out of control...it just snowballed. I will never do that to myself again. Great apes eat fruit, fiber and lots of plant based protein. I'm a great ape, not a lion. -
Consider starting social media coverage of your changes like an Instagram low carb lifestyle or Keto journey (or whatever diet plan best represents how you will eat post op long term) Your dietary changes will be very public and everyone will see exactly what you are doing to lose the weight...

This has become too much! PLEASE HELP
jg7979 replied to theexfatgirl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Meal prep is most helpful strategy for me. It might help to put the time on your calendar to map out the next few day's or the week's meals--self-care time time. I also developed a meal time routine and three of my four meals are essentially the same every day. Instacart will deliver roasted chickens and a salad kit from the grocery store when I need something quick, and I also subscribed to Freshly (each meal is really two servings). There are similar services that do keto and low carb as well. As part of supporting your weight loss, you might try encouraging the family to eat the healthier options you make for yourself--just make it the new normal and not some strange diet plan. There is a lot more time planning and thinking about my next meal now to avoid falling back into bad habits, and I toss a ton of food in the garbage (or spend extra buying the small portion packs anyway) too. My challenge was breaking the mindset that food brings pleasure and getting used to chicken and eggs. As I accepted the food is just fuel, the monotony was less frustrating, but there are still days I feel like I am going to lose my mind. One of the counselors I work with made it click for me though. He said I am fighting a lifetime of habits and conditioning that made me obese, and this a very abrupt change to your whole being. It is a new journey and you have to keep reminding yourself that your negative emotions are likely triggered by your mind wanting to pull you back into those habits that led to obesity. -
A month after sleeves and flatulence nonstop for 3 days
Hop_Scotch replied to jadore's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You mentioned in another thread that you are doing keto. If you are doing a genuine keto diet which is high fat, low carb it maybe that your stomach/digestive system is not able to cope with the high fat intake one month out. -
I'm part of a group of people who are mostly several years out of surgery. Some have tried WW. Some of them really like it and have been successful with it, but for others, it's not their "jam" and they gave up. I guess all you can do is try it and see if it works for you. others have tried things like Keto, intermittent fasting, or going back to logging and eating protein first, etc (in other words, the basics). Whatever works! BTW - 800 kcal a day being as far out as you aren't isn't really sustainable. Start logging to find out what your calorie range is (i.e., about how many calories does it take to keep your weight where it is. May take a month or so of logging to figure this out). Then, if you want to lose, cut back from there. Maybe 100 calories at a time. For example, if it takes 1600 kcal a day to maintain your weight, try cutting back to 1500. If after a couple of weeks nothing's happening, cut back to 1400. Rinse and repeat.

This has become too much! PLEASE HELP
Bastian replied to theexfatgirl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
What I do just as an FYI Batch cook spaghetti bolognaise, bag up just the sauce in single-serve sizes and freeze. Then when we have spag bol I just cook spaghetti for the fam and just a bit of veg for myself to go with my sauce (pasta and my gut are no longer friends). takes 15 mins from start to serving then. or I will do a big keto cheese spinach quiche, slice freeze, serve there's with whatever (fries/salad/ hot veggies etc) and have my tiny slice with a bit of salad. Again super fast to do once cooked and divided up and frozen. I do the same with curries, casseroles etc -
Living Life 4 Ounces At A Time
OutsideMatchInside replied to 2-Liter's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@BigViffer Yeah, I track all my food in Metric. I wish we would just the rest of the scientific world. Also I notice that even on the packaging the grams in parenthesis are off from ounces/tablespoons, with the grams/ml being more accurate. It doesn't seem like much at one time, but over a month or a year, it adds up. @2-Liter I am really glad you like Keto. I think the key to doing it long term, is liking it. Really enjoying and understanding how it works. It makes it easy to make the right choices in various situations and you don't feel deprived. I also had a lot of bad habits that got me to almost 400 pounds. I am going the opposite now and trying to cement them as habits for life. Like weighing and tracking my food. The further out I get the more lax I want to get with it, but any time I slack off, even for half a day I suffer for it, so it just isn't worth it. If I hadn't been really serious about it in the beginning when it was fresh and I was really dedicated I am sure I would have quit by now. Also being serious about it in the beginning helped me learn that it really works and see the benefits so that also makes it easier to continue. I don't know if you use IG, but this guy https://www.instagram.com/vsg_kingtut_77 started large, he is still a big dude, but he built and fine as $%^&. If I was a big guy starting out, he would be motivation. Anyway, good luck and keep up the good work! -
My sister has been on a keto diet for about a month and has broken out into a pretty bad rash. (No WL surgery). Anyone ever dealt with this? Any tips on losing the rash but sticking with the diet?

Type 2 diabetes and the sleeve
OutsideMatchInside replied to StartingOver1118's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I chose the sleeve over the bypass knowing that the bypass had better results for diabetics. If the bypass was my only option, I just wouldn't have surgery. Touching my intestines is not an option. Prior to surgery I was already controlling my diabetes with diet mainly. Keto will keep your sugars in the normal to low range. So knowing that I could do it with just food prior to surgery, I decided the sleeve would make it easier for me too continue to do so. It is a personal choice you have to make with your doctors. -
I wanted to introduce my self since I view these forums daily and they have been more than helpful in my young journey so far. A little about my path, at my highest weight late 2019 I found out my scale does not go past 340. Of course, I have yo-yo dieted trying everything from Weight Watchers to Keto but as usual the weight loss happened then came back plus some. I started this latest adventure in September 2020 weighing in at 314 at the start of my required 6-month medically monitored diet and classes. Once completed I was down to 304 at the start of my pre-op liquid diet in preparation for a February 1st, 2021 VSG. On surgery day I was down another 10 pounds to 294. The surgery went fine and so far, recovery equally easy with three realizations. The first realization was that constipation is real and boy figuring out how to manage that one aspect is occupying my daily thoughts. I have tried everything from MiraLAX to Enema’s. So far, the latest attempt to control this seems to be working and that’s 12 teaspoons of Benifiber through out the day and 2 Colace twice daily. But nothing works like a good old fashion cup of coffee in the morning to start things flowing 😊. The second realization has been the mood swings and emotions from the hormones being released from rapid weight loss. Just ask my family, it seems I go from happy to depressed in a matter of minutes and back again. The final realization has been that yes, the stalls are real also. I have been locked into the same general weight for about a week and a half now and couple that with the mood swings, its enough to get you doubting your decision to have the surgery. Thankfully these forums have been a source of resolve and information that has gotten me through this far and helps me stay the course. Today I stand before this forum at 261, 53 pounds down total since the beginning and 33 pounds down since the day of surgery. Hopeful for the continued success as I walk this path and the constant adjustments to eating like knowing when I have had too much or drank too fast. There are far more benefits I have encountered already in my short time on this side of surgery but in an effort to keep a long story from getting longer I will reserve more comments for a future discussion. Thank you to all those who bring experience and honesty in there posts and replies I peruse daily and for those who are struggling earlier on then me, just know it does work if you follow the program and stay connected here.

Keto/VSG help please!

On a keto . Fats should be first . Then Protein . Still low carb . Better than crappy carbage Well done Sent from my GT-I9195 using the BariatricPal App -
OK, some of you know I've adjusted my macros to follow my dr's plan instead of doing my own version which is much lower carb. Basically he has me eating way more carbs a day than I was comfortable with but the carbs are the 'low or lower glycemic impacting' ones. That being said, while it has helped the scale move down a bit...it is like I will go for let's say...8 to 10 days weighing about the same..maybe inching up or down by less than a lb. Then I will drop 2 or 3 lbs. I get leery of updating my 'progress' as I'm still distrustful that the next day or 2 the scale won't just 'jump up' again.. Since I have increased my carbs, I have noticed a direct increase in hunger pangs...growly stomach. Hitting my water finally so ruled that out...I never had relief (except for 2 days) from hunger so I've had to deal with it this whole time but I try to double check whether it is head hunger, old habits cropping up, etc. but honestly...I did not have this same hunger in the weeks where I kept my carbs under 20 grams a day. I felt more..let's say 'satiety' when I was eating more of a keto based diet. I've been a bit frustrated at dealing with the increase in hunger and the DECREASE in feeling well..not fullness...but feeling like I had eaten 'something' and had no desire to even eat another bit. So, I decided the other day that I was not going to wait 30 minutes to drink water. This was a particularly rough day..actually one of the days that I have felt the absolute hungriest since the initial week of pre-op liquid diet. After I have gotten my protein in, then veggies, followed by carb/fruits...and my pouch is not feeling 'yucky', I have started to drink after 10 or 15 minutes if my stomach is still growling. This usually takes care of the feeling of hunger. Anyone else resort to drinking (WATER!) as a way to 'cut their hunger' after eating?

Who is doing Keto and sticking with it??
NikkiPen replied to WV_Chef's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
At around 3 months post op, i began having salty carb cravings, Cheez-its, or Triscuits, etc. Dry, carb, salty is what i really wanted! When I found myself at the store buying a big box of Cheez-Itz, I realized I needed to change something. So I did some reading and research, and knowing that keto is forever, not just to get to a goal, this was a bigger jump for me somehow. But I had all that surgery and all, so why not go for the gold?? I've recently downloaded 4 cookbooks that use 5 ingredients, contain 5 carbs to make all of the keto recipes, Bfast, Lunch, Dinner, and Dessert (In Five <-- for those google searchers). These aren't bariatric geared, so I have to pay attention to the end of day totals and see if i'm lacking in any protein areas. LOTS of fun foods in there, incorporating cream and cheese and eggs into a lot, but at the same time, not having to eat eggs and bacon every morning for bfast. I've not used those ketostix, but I'm sure as this goes along, I'll want to keep up with that. I'm still just starting out. This morning I am eating a Maple Pecan Porridge, made with Coconut Flour and Ground Flaxseed, with Cinnamon and toasted Pecans. I has a great taste, and certainly filled me up faster than expected. And most of these recipes are made for either 2 or 4 servings. I'm making for me only, hubs is a carb man, but I usually can adjust for 2 servings so that i only have 1 leftover meal. -
Boiled eggs carrots cheese Cucumbers hummus olives Cuts of cheese & meats of your choice Yogurt and fruit Soup in a thermos Cauliflower rice or mash and meatloaf Meal prep will be key to a lot of these. Do you have Pinterest Instagram etc? There are TONS of people giving out great free advice and examples. Usually its under Keto meal preps

Clear Liquid Diet Conflicting Information
FluffyChix replied to Swanton_Bomb's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Drink a cup of bouillon (with sodium full strength) and hydrate. Also take a tsp of MOM (milk of magnesia for 425mg of magnesium per day). According to the low carb docs this is the prescription for getting past the "keto flu" or carb withdrawal and headaches that happen when getting off of sugar-burning and onto fat-burning. As bad as it sucks, it's far better to feel craptastic now, than to experience this withdrawal and transition AFTER surgery. Dear God, the humanity in doing it the other way. Hang in there. -
I told my general GP last week about how I wanted to start doing keto at some stage although I'm sort of doing it now anyway and she's so against it. My husband is keto and she wasn't impressed. Although she's a great dr she knows bugger all about what keto really is im sure. This is a dr that told me muscle weighs more then fat !!!!... ummmm hello lol Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Glad to see so many people are doing this. I was sleeved 3 weeks ago and have been enjoying eggs with cheese. Lox with cream cheese. Tuna or egg salad with mayo. I ate an avocado plain and it upset my stomach. I even did bullet proof coffee. I still do a protein shake mixed with cold cinnamon coffee, even though they don't encourage whey protein on keto. I can't choke down a protein shake by itself anymore though. I might be ruined from all the protein shakes ???? I also started walking today. I don't even think about bread or sugar really. I think I've just told myself that those are foods that don't fit into my lifestyle anymore. So far so good!

Surgery is in 3 weeks and feeling very alone
1BigHeart replied to amanda-xo's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You are strong! I've felt alone at times, but have been finding good support in unexpected places like this forum and family that I never ever thought would support me in this endeavor. Dealing with the "unknowing advisors" (You know them...."Just eat healthy, go keto, etc.") is tough. My best response is to smile and say, "I'm doing what's best for me." You got this! -
Thank yall so much for the support! Even though you have me crying again, it is great to have someone to vent to. I can’t afford the surgery without insurance help. I can reapply next year, problem is, I need to be losing weight for my health not gaining to wait another year and reapply. I am back on Keto this week... not losing yet, but hope to. I am 50 yrs old, much harder to lose than it used to be. I have probably gained and lost 1000 lbs in my lifetime. I NEED the restriction to keep it off. I have never done keto before because doesn’t seem heart healthy at all, but I have to get the weight off. Yall know of any good weight loss support groups online? Thanks again for your support.

I totally get that fear - I was self pay too and I think we just put extra pressure on ourselves not to 'waste' money on something that doesn't have a decent chance of success. I'm only 3.5 months post op but I am certain that this surgery was a good investment in my future health. It's up to me whether that investment pays dividends in the long run. I wish you all the best on your journey - stay here and you'll get so much good advice and wisdom. And FWIW - I know I'm not long enough post op to answer your original question, but my partner lost about 50lbs some years back on keto and maintains on keto - we eat meat at most meals every single day - all the meats! I just eat about 1/4 of what he does at a sitting these days. 😎

Ketosis - How safe is it?
PixelToph replied to IveGotThePower's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I did a keto-based diet during my 7 months pre-op, and ended up losing 110 pounds before surgery. My diet was different from the typical "keto" diet since I'm a vegetarian, but I did try to stay below 25 carbs per day. I didn't count calories or fat at all. Just Protein (at least 100g) and carbs (no more than 25). I'm pretty sure I stayed in ketosis most of that time, though I didn't have any way to measure it. I'm almost 6 months out from surgery now and still eat very low carb. I am so glad I started before surgery because it got all the cravings out of the way when cheating wouldn't endanger my healing process. I'm sure it made the first weeks after surgery easier since I didn't have to deal with the cravings. As for safety, my surgeon and nutritionist both recommend a keto diet post-surgery. He says ketosis really helps the weight loss during those first months where most of the weight comes off. I'm just now starting to incorporate some whole vegetables into my diet. My program guidelines say protein only the first 5-6 months, and no simple carbohydrates (bread, Pasta, rice) for a minimum of 1 year (though I probably won't ever add them back in, since for me they trigger the cravings to come back). Just had my bloodwork done for my upcoming 6-month follow-up and all of my numbers are good. -
So Irma has opened my eyes to the gaping hole in my meal Prep Armor. Whats 4 days right I mean I lived 43 years eating that way right, Wrong those 43 years almost caused me not to make it to 44.
