How Soon Is Too Soon for Reset?
Lanie992 replied to nolo56788's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you are eating low carb/low sugar/high protein food, then I would put it down to the dreaded stall. My first stall lasted close to a month... when it was over - I started losing 4-5 lbs a week for three weeks, but then hit a stall again.. From what I understand, a lot of people have multiple stalls along the way. But, I would suggest being more mindful of calories - they can add up, especially with things like cooking oils. Using cooking sprays can help alleviate that. Try not to stress out about and trust the process. -
It only has 170 calories in the regular RTD form

Okay, now I have some questions and some concerns. I know very little about weight watchers. You mentioned being on a new programm that is carb based. Already that seems like a problem. I am not a carb hater and there are people on this forum who would faint at the idea of having yoghurt for Breakfast like I do. If WW is truely carb based then it needs to go. I find it odd that it is however; unless you are confusing their theory that veggies are almost a non food and are'nt considered calories at all (I'm simplifying I know) with being carb based. You mentioned having frozen diet meals. Again, not intrinsicly bad but yes they are high in carbs usually potato, Pasta, rice. You must focus on 3-4 Oz of Protein and then eat have say 3/4 cup of veggies. You mentioned meat being trigger for weight gain for you. Meat is not a intrinsically bad either (not looking to discuss the ethics of eating meat). 3 oz of grilled chicken no skin is a world away from boneless Buffalo chicken wings (fried, and the sauce's main ingredient is butter). It also sounds like you need to stop the 100 pack stuff. It's called the halo effect "It's only 100 calories so I can have dessert", or "It's 100 calories so I can have 2". If you have 1 a day for 35 days and don't burn off those calories it's still a 1 pound gain.

I dont have problems with any type of meat or bread like you, and i almost wish i did, because those are what get me in trouble! so i have found other ways thru weight watchers with the 100 calorie mini cupcakes and i am satisfied. i usually try and wait until my stomach is growling to eat, even if my head is telling me different. Since i am on weight watchers the new program is carb based, so im really not sure the calorie amount i am getting since its the point system. i just wish it would come off a little faster so i can see results and get motivated, thats all. and working full time and school full time and being a single mom is exhausting!! it leaves little time for exercise

I think the best piece of advice I can give is this: stop comparing yourself to your friend. I think it's only going to be a source of disappointment, and I'm not sure that her experience is going to be a close enough match to yours to make her comments helpful. If there is one thing I've realized in the last 6 months, it is that no two banded experiences are alike. Here's what I think: some people are slower losers than others and short of making themselves completely miserable with overfills and self-induced starvation, there isn't much they can do about it. If you are slowly but steadily seeing the scale go down, then you're doing fine. Certainly take a look at WHAT you are eating, and if it makes sense, experiment with calories or carbs or whatever. Be honest with yourself no matter what. And if you are honest and eating healthfully, then the odds are highly in favor of the weight coming off. It might take 3 years. But in the end, it will be gone and you will be healthier for it.

Okay, so I am 4.5 weeks out and after dropping 43 pounds (including the liquid diet) I am in the dreaded stall. It is evil, completely evil, and even though I know it is basic math (calories eaten-calories expended will eventually lead to weight loss) I can't help feeling frustrated. I have banned the scales, read all the stall posts, but need to vent. I upped my exercise this week, tried to up my food a little (600 calories). So please post encouragement and tips, dear fellow sleevers!

Sorry for the language but my biggest fear has become a reality. I have battled an underactive thyroid for the past 15 yrs. I had radiation done on a goiter and now I think that has ruined my metabolism. I am a year and a half out from my lap band surgery. I have only lost 61 pounds. My band dr. Is frustrated as well. I have done everything right. I really don't eat more than 1100 calories a day. I have been walking like crazy. And in two months I have lost 1 pound. I am so discouraged. I feel like a huge failure. I know people look at me and think...man she should be skinnier. THYROID DISEASE SUCKS. Unless you have battled it you can't understand. Please tell me someone else has this struggle. ????

I stopped weighing myself everyday - due to frustration. For two weeks now I have been at 178-180. I started this surg at 200 on 1/24/12. I am getting 60 oz of fluid a day and 50grams of protein, I know I need more protein, but did any of you have this stall ? Do I need more calories, (I will admit I dont eat much at all). Any help to continue to move forward ??? Thanks

I'm a loser...and not in a good way
cwm812 replied to Fluffy_Gurl's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Fluffy, I feel for you and you won't get a lecture from me. It sucks when the black cloud is over your head, but you'll get through it somehow and things will get better. They always do. The breakup has got you in a tailspin. I've been there. I broke an engagement one time and I swear, I didn't think straight for 2 months. Considering what you've been through, I think you doing ok. I know you are really trying and you are doing a lot of things really well. Take it easy on yourself for awhile. Give yourself a week, not to eat like a crazy woman, but just to take a break and not worry about things. Then pick one thing you know you can do and make sure you do it. Right now, you're trying to do everything right and it's too hard with all your other issues. The next week, pick another rule to work on. It's not hard, if you don't try to do it all at once. You will lose weight. It may take some time. Stress is really hard on everyone. Try not to get too freaked out by the variations on the scale. It will even out. One more thing...it's possible you are too tight. When I was eating how you are now (no breakfast, chili or Soup for lunch), after 2 months I went and got a slight unfill and I could eat more solid food. I lost a few pounds after that, even though I was close to my goal and probably eating more calories (I don't count them, so I don't know). I hope everything turns around for you soon. Cindy -
Can Splenda cause you to stall or gain ??
Rootman replied to juzmejnee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I also have had Splenda and a few other 0 calorie sweeteners without any harm too. I keep seeing articles and posts touting that artificial sweeteners can make you gain weight but when it comes right down to it I don't see any plausible explanation as to WHY. They typically just mention the fact that it wakes up cravings for sweets causing the person to consume other high cal sweets, I haven't had it happen to me. I drink a few diet 0 cal sodas a week, 2 cups of coffee with Splenda a day and have pretty steadily lost. I recently started to lose again after being stalled at 210 for over a month but while my weight stayed the same my measurements kept decreasing, I was building muscle from working out and displacing fat. Short answer - no one really knows, if they do their not coming out with a scientifically backed answer. -
Am I Over-Reacting?
DiminishingDawn replied to Gibbys Goddess's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are thought to have a malabsorption component that lasts for 18 months or so. This is the malabsorption of calories, fat etc (macronutrients). Malabsorption of micronutrients (Vitamins and minerals) lasts forever. Don't worry original poster - just stay on course :-) -
I'm a loser...and not in a good way
jguttery replied to Fluffy_Gurl's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
It sounds like you have a huge load (no pun intended) on you right now. What I mean is, there are some huge stress factors in your life!!!!! I would like to suggest that you might want to talk to a nutrietionist. Also count those calories!!!! Nachos are my favority cheat too, and I'm not saying to not treat yourself to them, but eat some protien before hand so I don't fill up on the nachos. My band is tighter in the mornings too... so breakfast for me is usually yogurt or soft eggs after a cup of hot coffee. Hot liquids seem to loosen my band a little. There will be ups and downs in weight loss...... but that does not mean you are failing, you have already recognized the weight flux.... now you just need to make a plan to decide where to go from here. As far as your friends weight loss, the band works differently for each person... her journey is her journey, just as yours is yours. You just have had a couple more hills to climb. There are four other banders in the area at my work..... each one has had different weight loss rates. Believe me there is no way that you are a loser (in the bad way)!!!!!! Hang in there, you can do it! Make yourself a small goal, maybe something like a 2 or 3 pound loss by whatever date..... and use every bit of the detmination that I know you have to reach it.. small goals build into larger ones. -
Not sure why I am consuming small amount of calories??? Has anyone else had small lost first month after wls.

vlp1968 replied to toribug1234's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I count calories and protein. You want to get between 40 and 60 grams. I eat about 650 calories. As far as carbs, get them from the "right sources. Things like fruit, beans, starchy vegies like corn or potatoe, whole grain cereal, oatmeal. Dairy offers some carbs too. My nutritionist says 2 servings of dairy a day. I like lowfat cheese sticks and yougurt. -
Carb intake?
juliansmom2003 replied to juliansmom2003's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That has been my focus too--calories, protein and fat. Then my sister goes and mentions that when she reduces her carbs, she notices more weight loss. Just another thing to track, great! LOL -
My nutritionist said 130 carbs a day. Have to admit I am probably getting 50-70 all from heathy options. I only keep track of protien and calories. Generally eat very low fat (ie. eggbeaters instead of eggs, only very lean meat).

Easy vegetable-rice soup Serves 4 Of course, you may chop a fresh onion and a bell pepper or two to substitute for the frozen mixture but why? I prefer the convenience. Some frozen onion-bell pepper mixes contain celery or other seasoning vegetables. They work fine, as do larger quantities of the vegetables (if you should find a 1-pound bag, for instance, use that). 1 tablespoon canola oil 12 ounces smoked sausage, such as kielbasa or skinless turkey smokes sausage 12 ounces frozen onion-bell pepper mix 3 to 4 cups minced fresh green cabbage ( I will use a bag of cole slaw cabbage) 2 cloves garlic, minced, about 2 teaspoons 1 teaspoon thyme A 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, optional 1 quart reduced-sodium chicken broth 2/3 cup white or brown rice 15 ounces canned crushed tomatoes Put oil in a large saucepan over high heat. Chop sausage into A 1/4-inch (or so) pieces ( I cut the sausage in slices then quarter those so I get sausage in every bite), and add to saucepan as you do. When all the sausage is added, cook, stirring occasionally, until it begins to brown. Add onion-bell pepper mix, and stir. Add cabbage, garlic and thyme (and cayenne pepper, if using) as you get them ready. Keeping the heat as high as you can, cook 15 minutes more, stirring occasionally, or until the vegetables are tender and have reduced quite a bit in size. Add chicken broth, 1 cup of water and rice. When the mixture boils, reduce heat, cover and cook 15 minutes, or until rice is tender. Stir in tomatoes, bring to a boil and serve. Serve with garlic bread. I am only 3 weeks out .and now I am scared. I am starting to feel hungry again. Is this normal I lost about 30 total. I don't think I am eating the right food. Or even getting enough protein or calories
-
How do you stay off hte sugar? I'm struggling at the moment due to a lot stress at work. In my olden days I'd cope by eating a bag of Oreos or getting a large DQ Blizzard with Oreo and Heath bar. On Saturday, I gave in to a Skinny Cow chocolate stir shake for which I added Almond Milk instead of 1/3 cup regular milk. It was pretty good and less than 250 calories. But I need to stop COPING with sweets. I'm pretty much addicted to Crystal light at the moment, but nothing does this body better than CHOCOLATE during stress and/or that TOM. I need to shake this habit.

Question about the dreaded Starvation Response
amaretto replied to amaretto's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for the responses. It seems a little counter intuitive to me that after the swelling-restriction goes away, then comes the fill-restriction, which somehow allows for greater calorie intake. It must come not from the volume of food eaten but by being able to eat from a higher quality selection. I am definitely looking forward to getting my protein from chicken next week instead of just whey! -
Many bandsters don't lose weight the first month or three. Two weeks of not losing weight isn't really considered a plateau. Maybe 6 weeks or more would qualify but two weeks is nothing. If you're only eating 600 calories a day your body is most likely in a starvation mode and will hold onto weight till you ramp up your intake. We all have to find our green zone of calories in and calories burned. Some people lose more if they eat 1200 calories and there are others who lose on 800-1000. 600/day can make your body's metabolism slow down to nada. But, again, two weeks means nothing in the grand scheme. And, you really shouldn't be worrying about losing weight just yet? Once you start getting fills and find some restriction you can work on the fat loss. But right now is a time to heal. Don't worry about it. I didn't start losing weight till my 3rd fill and that was 3.5 months out from surgery. tmf

Where does common sense come into play?
Bonnie_Lass replied to tarajim's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As far as variation between doctors goes, I guess some are more cautious than others. Some accept and some reject ideas about carbonation, coffee, etc. Basically though there are a lot of similarities. I went to check out 2 different surgeons before choosing mine - they both had a pre-op diet, both for either 10 days or 2 weeks. One was restricted to a few no/low-fat foods, and the other had a liquid Meal Replacement. Both gave the same reason - to lose fat off the liver before surgery to avoid complications during surgery. Different approaches for the same objective. Common sense needs to be used, but the doctors have information we don't that would make a difference to what would make sense, so they need to give rules. Do you know what chemical affect smoothie yogourt mixed with stomach acid will have on a swollen irritated stomach? Yogourt is actually good on the stomach, I think - I'm not trying to scare you off of it, but that's why we need to check out the rules. One bandster on here talked about being allowed solids within a week post-op but had problems, another said, same deal, but they didn't have problems - who knows what the end results of those will be vs. those who have waited longer to start solids because of their doctors advice. Common sense would say though that if you are having problems on solids, go back to mushies or liquid. So yes, we do still need to use it, then check with the doctor. Glad to hear you're not hungry on a 600 calorie diet, but if you are talking post-op you will have a harder time soon when your stomach is less swollen. Good Luck. -
For anyone with an iPhone or iPod Touch...
heartfire replied to drew05's topic in Fitness & Exercise
Hmmm, that sounds interesting! I'll have to check it out. Thanks!! Wonder if you can just use the exercise part of it? I could use some help with that. My problem with all of the food/calorie trackers is that I cook a lot of fresh foods and make up recipes as well as use recipes from all over. Unless I enter all the ingredients into the tracker, I can't know for sure what my calorie intake is. It'd be different if I was using canned Soup instead of making my own. But I just don't have time to enter all of that in. Just the other night I made up a soup based on a side dish I make. Great, healthy soup but I have no idea what the calorie content of it would be! -
Yeah most people Dont get in the calories they need. When youre swelling goes down your appetite will increase and it will make it easier. Just make sure u are getting plenty of fluids!

i thought I was stretching my sleeve because when i could eat soft foods . I sometimes could eat around 5 oz but it had to be "slider" food . soft foods that slide down. But I'm 6 week out and the sleeve will let me know that I can not have another bite, I guess you have to learn your body and your "new" organ , Sleeve... Everyone is different. I asked my surgeon what was the size of my sleeve. He said 2 oz.... I think he probably tells everyone that. LOL i can't and don't overeat. Its not worth that. but I have notice that also. It makes me more aware of my foods and calories. I may eat only 900-1200 daily and I exercise daily. i have lost 38 lbs since surgery. 80lbs more to go...
