  1. I had my gastric band put in in 2009 and lost 41 kg (90 lbs) over about 18 months. I then had abdominoplasty in 2012 to get rid of 5 more kg (11 lbs) of skin. Once the surgeon took the fluid out of the band for surgery it was stuffed! I could never get just the right amount of fluid in - 3.5 ml and I couldn't swallow even water, 3.25 ml and I was starving. As a result I ended up gaining back 32 kg slowly over the last 6 years. I finally got fed up of feeling tired and fat and in pain all the time with bad knees, so asked my bariatric surgeon what we could do about it. He suggested revision to RNY, and I trust him implicitly, so said ok. I had my band removed on July 17th and it was alright. I was only in overnight and like Matt he used the same incision points as my original surgery so no new scars (not that anyone looks at my belly anyway ). I did have a lot of post op shoulder tip pain, but that went away very quickly. I'm also very allergic to any kind of tape and developed a terrible blistered rash under the OpSite he used over the incisions. The only other downside was that I was able to eat anything I wanted and in large portions. I gained another 6 kg before my RNY on 26 September. The RNY surgery was super easy. I was admitted at 6:30 am, taken to the OR at 7:30 and back in my room and wide awake at noon. I asked the nurse doing my obs if I could get up to go to the toilet and she said I could so I took myself for a walk around the ward before getting back into bed. I had absolutely no pain with any part of the surgery. He used Dermabond glue instead of bandages or Steri-Strips and it's pretty much all fallen off now. I think the worst part was having the drain removed 2 days post op. I was only in hospital for 2 nights, which suited me fine. I think people recover better at home where they can lie in their own bed, not be woken up every 2 hours for someone to check blood pressure and such. I did go home with a terrible head cold (that I think my partner gave me) and developed shingles on the side of my face and up my nose, but honestly I'm sure that was a side effect of my body having to try to heal itself from the surgery and then the head/chest cold on top. I'm now 3 weeks out from the RNY and could not be more happy with my decision. I'm down 2 dress sizes and the pain in my knees is so much better.

    DS and vitamins and biotin?

As DSERS our Bs are quite often high without supplements.
  3. I should have read through the entire thread before posting the above. Having a range of values for anything on a nutrition label is completely normal. That is just a part of the food manufacturing process. I agree that this is a bs lawsuit. This does not rise to the level of false advertising IMO. On a separate note, I also disagree that casein is inappropriate for WLS patients, and that whey is superior.
  4. The third month of my 6 month supervised diet and exercise program I gained 9 lbs! I had slacked off and was not feeling motivated and didn't weigh myself so I actually didn't know I had gained that much. I have gotten back on track and have lost 5 lbs. Will my insurance company deny me because I gained weight that month?? I have Anthem BC/BS. I've got 6 weeks left until my 6 months are up and I get submitted for approval. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  5. I was on and off Depo for years. My favorite bc, EVER. But I got scared off because of the effects on calcium and bone density. https://nwhn.org/depo-provera-and-bone-mineral-density/ Also when I went off depo after 3 years, it took me over a year to get my period back. I didn't like that the hormones had built up in my body for that long. Also if I had wanted to become pregnant during that time.it wouldn't have been possible. I got the Mirena IUD just prior to my WLS. I agree, it hurt like a b*tch, and I have irregular spotting both light and heavy since. But I like that is is the most effective form of bc, and I don't need to remember to take a pill, or go get a shot, etc.

    IBS help!!!!

Sleeved Tuesday. Extreme diarrhea. Dr wants me to keep drinking and go to ER! What’s the point? Until I eat solids, I’ll go to ER?? This is BS! Before the surgery I asked this question and was told it will all work out! Any suggestions???
  7. Hope your surgery went well and you had a great experience! In case anyone else reads your topic and is wondering, my surgery was on Weds, I was discharged on Thurs, went back for swallow test on Fri, and we flew back on Sunday. We gave ourselves extra time bc we had to fly to/from Philadelphia and I have chronic back/neck pain. Also, we were planning around Xmas & NY's and wanted a reasonably priced non-stop flight. I could have probably flown a day or so earlier, but as it was I was surprisingly comfortable. We had an overnight flight 11pm - 5am roughly - and I used my heating pad for the few hrs. we sat in the airport. Then took my night time meds right after we boarded and the anti-inflammatories they gave me upon discharge. I slept for several hrs. and woke in time to watch the sunrise over our final hour descent over the city. Was actually pretty cool...

    Non Plain Water Drink Choices

Why is that? I am the same way, pre-op I only drank water, and tea (and a little wine😉). Now I want to drink ANYTHING besides water. Is it bc we are eating so much less that having flavor any way is helpful? Having an infused water pitcher in the fridge has helped me a lot, way cheaper than buying lots of potions and drinks. Only problem is that my kiddos want to drink all of mommy's "juice water". 😜

It could, it could, I am recovering from an inch of rAW BANANA. Oh that won't hurt anything. Wanna bet? My chest gets hurting and at my age that is not a GOODb sign. And I puked and puked a while more. All from,an amount i Imight have fed a baby with. See that's where smart people can excel, I cant get any.
  10. My (ex) bf and I have dated for nearly 5 years; he lives with me. The last year of our relationship has been rocky anyway, but ever since I told him I had decided to have gastric he became even more standoffish and argumentative. Two weeks ago we had a huge blowout over something completely idiotic, he comes back to the house, and says he has been acting the way he has because he thinks that once I lose weight I am going to leave him and that's all he can think about. Mind you... I have not even had the surgery yet. He said I am going to lose weight, gain self-esteem, realize I am too good for him, and leave him. Well, guess what, pal... I don't need to lose ANY weight to realize I am too good for you. It's been a long time coming, but I think it's even sadder that he is using my choice to get healthier as a justification for being an a*s. The only thing this does is put me in a rough position as far as someone staying with me while I recover. My mom and stepdad are going to take "shifts" as long as they can, but they both work. And the ex is currently dwelling awkwardly in my basement, but will probably not give me a hand at all. It does make me sad because I had hoped he would be there at the hospital with me... but then all of this BS happens. *insert gigantic eye roll emoji here* I am okay, though. I need these next 12 months to focus on me and getting healthy and fit and not dealing with unnecessary dramatics and stress. I have always thrived when single and he actually had moved out of the house for a year and it was fantastic. I hate to say it, but I'm looking forward to this new chapter - of not just weight loss, but of being single and free!

    Should I switch to RNY?

Here’s what I’ll say: Having any of these surgeries is like becoming a parent. You don’t “get it” until you’re already in it. You can’t prepare enough. Everything’s different despite all your preparations. It’s an organic thing that you have to live out and there’s no quick fixes. No one can really advise you specifically bc each case is slightly different. Or drastically different. You just have to prioritize your hopes and make your choice and then live strong with it. It’s a no regrets business bc you can’t go back. Nothing is ever the same. But the payoff is worth it. IMO so far.

    Should I switch to RNY?

@Foxbins thanks ill defn pick up soon as a precautionary @Sosewsue61 thats how mine is before only when i eat super spicy or super greasy foods, i just normally choose not to eat those foods otherwise no problems what so ever @TX4everLinds yea i saw that about the carb coma..one girl in this VSG/RNY group im in (she had RNY) out of nowhere a few years post op she said she took a bite of cake at a baby shower and started to feel bad so she left and ended up passing out and wrecking her car in a ditch.. she said she and the car was fine and luckily no one else was involved but she said it scared her bc it could have been way more serious and she just wanted to warn people to be careful bc dumping at any point is very serious

    Should I switch to RNY?

@CrankyMagpie thanks for the links, im going to check those out! @GreenTealael thanks girl! ill keep yall posted on what i decide @JohannaLea true, ive seen that a lot and i wonder why some people go back to old habits idk if its bc it is a habit or that they thought this was a cure not a tool like it should be and though "hey ill lose all this weight and still eat what i want" i recognize this is a tool and have seen a therapist to work on my over eating issues and get help to see why im doing these things. i see the tool as help but not a solution, you have to change how you eat and look at food as a lifelong commitment

    Should I switch to RNY?

I just had my sleeve on 9/5/18 so I’m a month and 4 days out. This month has been difficult but it’s nothing I didn’t read about beforehand. Somehow the gerd/reflux took me by surprise bc I’d never had it before. I’ve been out on nexium for 90 days and everyday things get better. I have high hopes it is short term while healing, but it was a real struggle when I didn’t know what was going on. I chose sleeve bc I did not want severe dumping. I had seen others sweat and dump and even fall asleep in carb comas on holidays after just a bite of pie. I wanted nothing to do with that. It affects everyday life. GERD does as well but is treatable and (I’m hoping) temporary! I also did not want my intestines changed at all. Gastrointestinal system is so important I just preferred to leave it how God made it! My 2 cents from a fresh sleeve. I did not think I felt hunger at all but think maybe now some of my nausea was actual hunger. Keep in mind I was (and still am) figuring out how to meet protein and water goals. It is very difficult and during healing your body sorta takes over. You have to follow its lead. Good luck!

Had surgery the 2nd and the tightening is calming down. It was the worst with water.. like you protein shakes have been the easiest thing. This morning I had Greek yogurt thinned with milk in the blender. It was a bit foamy and that was not going to work.. I took about 4 sips and knew I had to stop bc it felt like it was going to come up but never did. Just had 1/2 c homemade potato soup thinned and that was completely fine. So good!

    Texture eater :(

@Matt Z i never would of thought of that, thats a good idea! one they gave me as a suggestion was mix unsweetened applesauce with protein powder and god that was awful it was like the texture of slime that kids are always making nowadays and it was just a big nope for me...they said to do cottage cheese and i hate cottage cheese now taste wise period but i figured id try it after surgery and see if my taste buds change worst case my hubby will eat it bc he loves cottage cheese but its never been a thing for me

    TYLENOL

@CrankyMagpie thank you! probaly a good idea bc i dont know what my new tummy will tolerate.
  18. So my surgeon is leaving the decision to me but on my barium swallow i showed slight GERD not a significant amount but some..... I normally don't suffer from GERD unless i eat fried foods which cant eat those after surgery anyways... well i've been doing research on RNY vs Sleeve and originally I set out to have the sleeve but i see a lot of RNY patients bashing it b/c they say people don't really lose the weight and gain it back... is that just due to people making poor choices on food late or not enough exercise? or should i reconsider? sorry I am super nervous and just rethinking switching but i wonder if i was just hearing biased opinions from RNY patients...I would like to know if Sleeve patients have had just as good luck with weight loss by doing the things they should or would be honest and say they gained bc they made poor choices...(sorry for ranting) some facts that may help any advice: starting weight 255 at 5'7 tall--- 40 bmi I do have under active thyroid problems but that's it

If I overdo it. Took the kids to playground and then grocery store then fed them dinner and now I’m pooped.
  20. Prepackaged foods kill your tastebuds with salt and make people hate less salty things like vegetables; it's a fact. You're a product of your upbringing and if you're fed these things growing up, chances are you're going to continue the trend. Education on nutrition and applying this knowledge is important. Its the main reason most insurance companies for WLS require the months of nutrition appointments and/or classes. You must change your ways or your surgery will not be worth it. I know what I'm supposed to eat, I minored in nutrition in college, but my problem is that I don't apply what I know most of the time and I have a deadly relationship with full-fat dairy products, also loaded with sodium. This is going to be my biggest challenge going through this process, I wish you well. Like most of the others here said already, go slow. Try new veggies, but try to avoid over-salting them. Use herbs, garlic, non salt containing spices. If you like spicy things, use that, it's a great sub for salt. All the Best!
  21. My kids are grown with kids of their own now. My wife and I fed my two boys junk because that's what we grew up on so we didn't give it much thought. They both married women that are very conscious of what foods they eat and feed their children. I've learned so much about nutrition researching for WLS and I constantly encourage them to keep up the good work teaching my grand kids the right way to eat. No better time to break a bad cycle of eating habits than now. I feel horrible for not researching this stuff when my kids were young but with no personal computer in your pocket (phone), that would've required going to the library back in the late 80's. LOL

Requirements for Blue Shield of California

Blue Shield covers WLS, but if you have Blue Shield CA through Covered California, and you don't live in Southern Calfornia near an approved facility for covered california members, you're out of luck if you want a doctor who is less than six hours away. Did you get BS through Covered California? We may need to bite the bullet and pay the high regular rates to get the NON-covered California Blue Shield coverage which would allow me to go to the doctor I want who is only 20 mins. away.

Not doing great in pre-op diet

Nice! I live alone so i don’t have to worry about cooking for others. I get the bones from the local butcher where the beef is grass fed and then roast and simmer on low in my crockpot for 24 hours. The beef broth I did onions, carrots, garlic, celery, and a bay leaf.
  24. @TexasMommy80 yeah I am the same way. but what about right away following the surgey, my doctor said I would be very fertile and should consider going on some type of bc. He said it wouldn't be very wise to get pregnant for at least 1 & 1/2 years after the surgery date.

    VSG /Dumping/Late Dumping

I hear ya. It actually has to do with carbs. It's not necessarily linear. In general it usually means you're reacting to the carbs from some point in the day. It sets up a roller coaster spiral up and down, like a wavelength until it crescendos. The only way I know to defeat it is to make the waves have shorter amplitude (height) so that the waves "flatten" out. The only way to do that is to take the fast(er) acting carbs out of the equation. Some people can't handle grains of any sort--even oats. Others cannot handle even legumes. Some react from peanuts! Peanuts though low carb are a legume. And if your serving size is large enough, it can impact you. Once you get an attack, sadly, it can take a few days for your pancreas to get back on board and quit over-tumping insulin into your system so you rollercoaster up and down up and down up and down for a while. The only way to catch it really is to get a meter and start testing before and at periods after a meal. Once you know that meal is ok--it goes on your safe list... It's a PIA to run down, but if your bs is falling into the 40-50-60 level that is pretty dangerous and you need to know that information. It could be >2hours out even. Mine has been known to go out to 4-6hours.
