I hear you. I was banded on 3/10 and I went back to work last thursday. My first day back was one of the longest days I have had there. I was just tired and wanted to go home. I recommend taking it slow. My boss know about the band and I worked out a little arrangement with her. I broke my lunch up into two 15 minute breaks and a 30 minute lunch. If your boss knows about your surgery ask him/her about taking an extra break here and there or seeing if they can manipulate your lunch time too. Keeping up on fluids is important so hopefully your boss will be on board.

Hey all, I'm just about 10 weeks post-op and doing extremely well. A few of you have even gone out of your way to send me private notes of encouragement, kudos, and well-wishes. This means a lot to me, so thank you for that! I wanted to find out from you about your experiences with sleep post-surgery. I would say that before surgery I probably did have bouts of sleep apnea, though I never got tested for it or diagnosed with it. (Wife used to tell me I'd stop breathing in the middle of the night in between loud snoring, though...) Despite this, I was able to function pretty well on about 5 to 6 hours of sleep a night. Sometimes I'd even get 7 or 8 hours of sleep and be ok too. Now, post-operatively, I have found that it seems like I can never get enough sleep, and I have a real hard time getting out of bed in the morning. Any sign I had of the apnea went away shortly after surgery, so I know it isn't that. I have been getting 8 hours of sleep at a minimum and often find myself hitting the snooze button and even coming in to work late because I grab more sleep where I can. It's frustrating. Has this happened to anyone else? Does it ever change or return to normal? What causes this? Theories? Ideas? Suggestions? I hope all is well with you in your respective journeys, I'm humbled to be fighting the good fight alongside all of you and value your input. Cheers, ~Pat

How do you know when you are at the "Sweet Spot"?
Phranp posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This past Friday I had my third fill. My doc said this might be the last one. He had me drink Water while filling my band and the water felt like it was bubbling up into my esophagus. I was on liquids for 24 hours and then eased into food the next day, per my doc. Here's my issue, if I take too big of a bite or eat too fast I seem to feel it in my esophagus, but once I slowed down I am able to eat more than a cup. It's not that I can eat a lot, but it is more than I think I should at the "sweet spot". I have an appt with my doc next week to see if I am sufficiently "filled". While I don't feel like I have quite the "right" amount in my band (4.5 cc in a 10 cc band), I am afraid that if I get another fill the pain will be much worse in my esophagus when I eat. Am I confusing two different things or am I asking for problems if I get another fill? Help, please. -
Just experienced my first horrible night. I am 10 weeks out. I ate one slice of rare beef, potatoes and a gravy sauce with pineapple and garlic in it. I started having some sharp cramping pains about 10 minutes later. I managed to rest and drive home. Later, I thought I was not going to make it through the night. Severe stabbing pain for 5-6 hours that came and went initially and then by 11pm to 2am became pretty intense. Vomiting was an issue. Can anyone tell me if they have experienced a similar situation? Is this because I ate such rich food? Is this a gallbladder issue? I am feeling pretty fragile today, can't really eat much just living on liquid diet today. I feel like I was beat up. Looking for some help explaining this. Thanks!

I'm at a weight stand still.
Cleo's Mom replied to gonnaloseitall's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Eat breakfast - even if it's a protein shake. Make sure you're getting protein in your soup or salad at lunch and add some fruit, too. Also keep in mind that for every 10 pounds you lose, you need 150 fewer calories to maintain that weight. -
What can I eat? If I drink one more sweet drink I am gonna gag. Help!

10 days out for me all I was allowed was cottage cheese, greek yogurt, oatmeal, mashed potatoes and unsweetened applesauce.

I went this am for the barium swallow and then to my doctor's office for my first fill. It was alittle uncomfortable for about 10 seconds. My daughter Amanda went with me and thought it was cool to watch. She is 19 and eats very healthy (I think due to watching a Mom struggle her whole life with the issue of weight) and weighs 110 lbs. He injected 1.75cc into my port. I am sore today in that area. I am now on a liquid diet for 3 days and he says to come back in a month. He will not see me sooner unless it is an emergency. The whole thing today was pretty easy, I am just soooo hungry. I hope that I will feel the restriction. Waiting to see.......

Hi. I'm sure this has been addressed before and hate to be repetitive; however, I need some help and reassurance please. I have a 4cc band and was banded on 10/26/05. I don't know what my current fill is but the last one I got was 3 weeks ago. This last fill was the first time I really felt any restriction and I was PB'ing all the time because I was having to get used to it being tight. Then last Wednesday I went out to eat with my daughter. That day at lunch I had had some trouble eating but just thought it was the usual eating too fast, too big of bites, not chewing, etc. Then that night at the cafeteria, I could get NOTHING to go down. I had to run to the ladies room 3-4 times. I was sooo embarrassed...of course there were people in there that I knew! Once I almost didn't even make it to the bathroom. I tried later that night to eat, no go...the next morning...no go...and Thursday afternoon...no go. I called my doc and they told me to stay on warm liquids and not to worry about slippage, etc. Finally later Thursday, after much broth, I could eat. Now I don't have much restriction I feel. I have PB'd maybe 3x when I tried to take my medicine or when I just absolutely ate too fast running out the door! Geez, when am I going to learn. I am making bad choices, and not losing weight. I really thought it would be much easier. I see talk of people losing some restriction as time goes on...but I still seem to drink when I eat~! I struggle with this daily. How do I get my head on straight, and can a fill go from absolutely very tight to no restriction?

Question for those who are 18 months post op
MacMadame replied to wishinghoping's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes! I have some links here to threads on another board from people one, two and three years out. People talk about their metabolism like it's a thing, another organ. That makes my anal, engineering-oriented head hurt. :001_tongue: Your metabolism is a measure of how many calories you burn over a period of time; it's just a rate. Your rate can be average, below average, above average, excellent, poor, etc. But it can't be broken, messed up or dead. Yeah, I know... no one cares. :lol0: I do think that a lifetime of yo-yo dieting can slow down your metabolism. But it's not fixed in stone. We can influence our metabolisms for the better or the worse. I have definitely seen that I can't eat as many calories as the formulas say I can. But that's always been true. It just seems more true now that I'm older. Is my metabolism that much worse? Well, in my 30s, I lost weight eating 1200 calories a day and doing aerobics 2x a week. I lost about a pound a week until the last 10-20 lb. Now, in my 50s, I was eating 800 calories a day and training for a triathlon. And losing 2-3 lb. a week until my calories went up. I'd have to do math to figure out if I'm losing slower or faster or the same as when I was in my 30s. It feels slower, but I suspect it's about the same. -
Hi I just begun my journey and decided lap band is best for me, I have a BMI of 54 (ugh), going through Kaiser to have procedure done and insurance say's I'm covered, checked 3 seperate times now to make sure, DR is writing my referral for the surgery once I complete the introduction class in a few weeks, began working out riding excercise bike 8-10 miles a day for 40 min and jogging in pool for another 20-30min evry other day, and started 1200 calorie/day diet hoping to drop some lbs in advance to get the ball rolling and get used to whats instore, been cutting my food into tiny pieces, and chewing to mush to used to that, I've had enough of being fat Anyone else gone through Kaiser or can offer what I should expect in coming weeks, I do know I will be required to lose 10% I was told of current weight, is this true I have read some posts that drs just want you to make an effort and lose what you can before surgery, basically what am instore for in coming week, tests, physc exam? etc thanks

Even though I just had surgery on Monday, I've already had a non scale victory! When I logged today's weight into my fitness pal, it said because I had lost more than 10 pounds, they had to recalculate my goals. I know my calorie goal was over 1300 (which I thought was a bit much) but now it's down 1240. I'm totally psyched! I'm not logging my food right now because I'm just on full liquids. I'm nowhere close to the amount of calories I should be having, so I don't see the sense in it. I love this app!!

as long as you're eating the right things and keeping a journal of how much you're eating, then it's the right thing because you're constantly fueling your metabolism. My nutritionist said that's my problem, is that i was only eating once or twice a day with 10 hours or so between meals. She said when you eat like i do (or did - i'm trying), your body goes into starvation mode. she said naturally thin and sucess stories on the band are people who eat 5 or 6 times a day -- eating the right, healthy things. just be sure to make good choices with your Snacks. My only concern is, if you're grazing, when are you getting your liquids in, since we're not supposed to drink for an hour or more after we eat....

Posted 10-07-2009 at 05:07 AM by Hychap2009 OMD, I just got a call from admissions at Kings College Hospital. I've finally got a date - for sure now. Surgery date 20th October - i'll be going in on the 19th. Hopefully, this will be a turning point in my journey. So I've a little more time to churn over all the emotions, all over again. So for those of you who may be reading this, please pray for me and send positive vibes my way. Thank you.
